The short version

Lodge Type Matters More Than You Think

The Serengeti is 14,763 square kilometres — larger than Connecticut. A lodge in the central Seronera Valley puts you in entirely different wildlife territory from a camp on the northern Mara River. Where you stay matters more than almost any other decision in your trip planning. This guide cuts through the marketing language and gives you a honest framework for choosing.

Questions to Ask Before Booking Any Serengeti Lodge

Where exactly is this camp located?

Zone and GPS coordinates should be available before booking. Central, north, south, and west have completely different wildlife profiles — and some camps marketed as 'Serengeti' are 60km from the migration corridor.

Is this camp open during my travel dates?

Many northern and southern camps close for part of the year. Confirm before booking — turning up to find a camp closed is rare but not impossible with budget operators.

What is the maximum occupancy?

Small camps (6–12 guests maximum) offer a fundamentally different experience from large lodges with 80+ beds. The wildlife experience at a sighting with 6 people and 40 safari vehicles is very different.

Are drinks and meals included?

Most Serengeti camps quote all-inclusive rates. Some do not. Alcoholic beverages, soft drinks, and water policies vary — and the real all-inclusive cost matters when comparing properties.

Common questions

Frequently Asked Questions About Serengeti Lodges

Which Serengeti zone is best for the Great Migration?+

It depends on the timing. For the calving season (January–February), stay in the Southern Serengeti near Ndutu — that is where 500,000+ wildebeest calves are born over three weeks. For the famous Mara River crossings (July–October), the Northern Serengeti around Lamai and the Mara Triangle is the only place to be. For the Grumeti River crossings in May–July, the Western Corridor is exactly right. Each crossing happens in a specific zone — being in the wrong zone means missing the show.

What is the difference between a lodge, a tented camp, and a mobile camp?+

A lodge is a permanent structure with walls and en-suite facilities. A permanent tented camp has canvas walls on a fixed raised platform — more immersive than a lodge but with solid comfort. A mobile camp is a seasonal tented operation that relocates 4–6 times per year to follow the migration herds. Mobile camps offer the best wildlife proximity but fewer luxuries. All three can range from basic to exceptional — the label tells you the structure type, not the quality.

How much does a Serengeti lodge cost per night?+

Budget tented camps start around $156–$312 per person per night. Mid-range lodges and permanent camps typically cost $416–$832 per person per night. Luxury camps and lodges range from $832–$1,560 per person per night. Ultra-luxury properties can exceed $2,600 per person per night. These prices generally include accommodation, meals, and two game drives per day. Park fees ($62–$74 per person per day in 2026) are additional.

Should I stay inside the Serengeti or on a private conservancy?+

Inside the national park: more vehicles are permitted at sightings, park gate hours apply (typically 6am–6pm), and night drives or off-road driving are not allowed. On private concessions adjoining the Serengeti: far fewer vehicles, night drives and walking safaris are permitted, and you have complete flexibility on timing. Private conservancies cost more but offer a fundamentally different experience — one that feels genuinely wild rather than like a wildlife theme park.

How far in advance should I book Serengeti accommodation?+

For peak season (July–October for crossings, January–February for calving), book 8–12 months ahead. The best camps have only 6–12 tents and fill 12–18 months before high season. For the green season (November–June), 3–6 months is usually sufficient. Last-minute bookings are possible but the best camps will be unavailable.
