Arusha is the starting and ending point for virtually every northern circuit Tanzania safari. Most international visitors arrive knowing very little about the city itself. This guide covers the practical logistics of arriving, orienting, and starting your safari from Arusha.

Which Airport to Use
There are two airports that serve Arusha safaris:
- Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) — 45 km east of Arusha city centre, approximately 50 minutes by road. This is where international flights arrive, including connections from Nairobi, Addis Ababa, Doha, Amsterdam, and other hubs. Most safari visitors use JRO.
- Arusha Airport (ARK) — a smaller domestic airstrip 5 km from the city centre. Used for light aircraft connecting to Serengeti, Tarangire, Zanzibar, and other domestic destinations. You will pass through ARK if your safari includes internal flights.
Safaris Tanzania handles airport transfers from both. Send your flight details to Kassim when booking and a vehicle will be waiting on arrival.

The First Night in Arusha
If your international flight arrives late or you want a rest day before heading into the parks, Arusha has good accommodation options at various levels. The city is safe for hotel areas and the main tourist strip. A pre-safari night in Arusha allows you to:
- Meet your guide and confirm the itinerary face to face
- Test your equipment, check batteries, organise camera bags
- Buy any last-minute items (sunscreen, snacks, small cash for tips)
- Adjust to the time zone before long game drives begin

What Arusha Is Like
Arusha is a mid-sized Tanzanian city of roughly 400,000 people. It is the headquarters of the East African Community and has an international character — you will hear Swahili, English, and a dozen other languages. The city is not a tourist showpiece but it is functional, friendly, and interesting if you have time to explore.
The central market, cultural heritage centre, and coffee estate tours are the main visitor activities within the city. Most safari travellers spend one or two nights and then head directly into the parks. That is fine — Arusha is a logistics hub, not a destination in itself.

Distance to Key Parks
Driving times from Arusha to the main northern circuit parks:
- Tarangire: 2 hours (120 km, mostly paved)
- Lake Manyara: 2 hours (130 km, paved to the gate)
- Ngorongoro Conservation Area entrance: 3 hours (180 km)
- Central Serengeti (Seronera): 7-8 hours by road, or 90 minutes by light aircraft
- Arusha National Park: 45 minutes (25 km)
For itineraries that include the Serengeti, internal flights are worth considering — the time saved is significant and the light aircraft approach over the plains is itself memorable.
Currency and Cash
Tanzania's currency is the Tanzanian Shilling (TZS). US dollars are widely accepted for tourism services. ATMs in Arusha (CRDB, NMB, Stanbic) dispense both TZS and USD. Bring some cash for small purchases, tips, and any market shopping — card payments are not universal outside hotels.
Safaris Tanzania quotes and invoices in USD. Park fees, accommodation, and transport are all settled through us — you do not need cash for these.
What to Bring into Arusha
Everything you need for the safari itself. Arusha has pharmacies, supermarkets, and outdoor shops if you forget something, but selection and quality are limited. Do not rely on buying specialist items in Arusha — bring all medications, technical clothing, and specific photography equipment from home.

Arrival Coordination with Safaris Tanzania
Once you have confirmed flights, WhatsApp Kassim at +255 786 110 786 with your arrival details. He will confirm your pickup, first night accommodation, and departure time for day one. This coordination happens directly — there is no booking system, no automated email, no call centre. You deal with the person running the operation.
Understanding Arusha's Climate Before Your Safari
Arusha sits at 1,400 metres altitude on the southern slopes of Mount Meru, which gives it a noticeably cooler climate than the Tanzanian coast. This matters for packing and physical preparation. Daytime temperatures in Arusha year-round are 22-28°C, dropping to 10-15°C at night. August is the coolest month — morning temperatures at dawn can be as low as 8°C, which feels cold by Tanzanian standards.
The altitude also means you may notice slightly faster breathing during physical activity for the first day or two. This is normal and not a health concern — it typically resolves within 24-48 hours as your body adjusts. If you have any respiratory or cardiac concerns, discuss them with your doctor before travel and inform Safaris Tanzania at booking.
The safari parks themselves are at varying altitudes: Tarangire and Lake Manyara are at lower elevation (900-1,000m) and are warmer than Arusha. Ngorongoro Crater rim is at 2,300m and is significantly colder. Your packing should account for this full range — layers that can be added and removed throughout the day as you move between different climate zones.
What Safaris Tanzania Handles Before You Arrive
When you book with Safaris Tanzania, the pre-arrival coordination is handled personally by Kassim. This is what he organises before your flight lands:
- Airport pickup confirmation. Flight details sent to Kassim result in a driver waiting at JRO or ARK on arrival, with a sign bearing your name. No searching for transportation, no negotiating with taxi drivers.
- First night accommodation. If your arrival requires an overnight in Arusha before the safari starts, Kassim books and confirms your hotel. This is coordinated with your arrival flight and safari departure time.
- Itinerary review. 48 hours before arrival, Kassim contacts you via WhatsApp to confirm the day's schedule, departure time from Arusha, and any last-minute questions. You meet your guide face-to-face at this point.
- Park fee confirmation. All park fees for your itinerary are pre-confirmed and paid before you arrive, so there are no administrative delays at park gates.
This coordination is the difference between a safari that starts stressed and one that starts relaxed. The first morning of a multi-day safari sets the tone for the entire trip. Safaris Tanzania invests in getting that start right.

Health Preparations for Tanzania Safari
Tanzania safari requires some health preparation that is often overlooked until the last minute. The essentials:
Malaria prophylaxis is strongly recommended for northern circuit travel. Tarangire, Lake Manyara, and the Serengeti all have malaria risk year-round, with highest risk during the wet seasons (November-December and March-May). Discuss the appropriate prophylactic with your doctor — many travellers use doxycycline or atovaquone-proguanil, both effective in East African malaria strains. Start the medication before you arrive and continue for a period after your return.
Yellow fever vaccination is required if you are arriving from a yellow fever endemic country (including Kenya and many other African nations). If you are arriving directly from Europe, North America, or Australia, it is not required. However, if your safari route includes entry through Kenya or any yellow fever country, carry a yellow fever certificate. Tanzania immigration may request it at the border.
Other recommended vaccinations include Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Typhoid, and routine vaccinations (MMR, DTap, etc.). Your travel medicine clinic will advise based on your specific health profile and itinerary.
First aid kit. Bring a personal kit that includes: prescription medications (enough for the entire trip plus extra), antihistamines, rehydration salts, ibuprofen or paracetamol, plasters/band-aids for blisters, and any personal medical items. Pharmacies in Arusha are limited and safari camps have no chemist on-site.
Why Arusha Is Worth an Extra Day
Most safari travellers pass through Arusha without stopping. This is understandable — the parks are the destination, and Arusha itself is not a major tourist attraction. But for travellers with an extra day before their safari begins, Arusha and its surroundings offer genuine experiences that are worth incorporating into the trip.
The most compelling Arusha extension is a day walk or short hike on Mount Meru, the 4,562-metre volcanic peak that rises immediately west of the city. The lower slopes of Meru are forested and cool, with good birdlife and views across to Kilimanjaro on clear mornings. A one-day hike to Meserani Crater (approximately 6-8 hours round trip from Arusha) is a substantial experience in its own right and acclimatises you usefully for any Kilimanjaro ambitions.

For a less strenuous option, a coffee tour at one of Arusha's working coffee estates (Tanzania is one of Africa's significant arabica coffee producers) gives insight into the agricultural economy of the region and ends with a tasting. Cultural heritage tours of Boma ya Ungozho, a traditional Meru homestead, provide context for the local Chaga culture that is the foundation of Arusha's history.
These activities are not included in standard safari itineraries but can be added by Safaris Tanzania as a pre-safari day. Tell Kassim if you have time and interest — he will arrange the logistics and provide honest recommendations about what is worth the time investment.
