The moment you step off the plane at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you are in a different world. The air is warmer than you expected. The light is different. The sounds beyond the terminal doors are unfamiliar. This is the beginning of your Tanzania safari — and for first-timers, it can also be the most anxious part of the trip.

We have met thousands of guests at KIA over 49 years. The anxiety is always the same: Where is my driver? How do I get a SIM card? Is my hotel safe? What happens at customs? This guide walks you through every step of the first 24 hours so nothing comes as a surprise.

Arriving at Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA)

The first thing to know: Kilimanjaro International Airport is not in Arusha. It sits 46 kilometres east of Arusha, in the Kilimanjaro Region near the town of Moshi. Most international flights arrive in the late evening or early morning. Do not expect to be in safari territory the moment you land — KIA is surrounded by farmland and small settlements.

At immigration, you will need a valid passport (six months validity recommended), a Tanzania tourist visa (available on arrival at KIA for most nationalities, or apply online in advance), and proof of yellow fever vaccination if arriving from a yellow fever zone. The immigration officer will ask the purpose of your visit. A safari booking confirmation helps. The process is straightforward and typically takes 15–30 minutes depending on queue length.

After immigration, you collect your bags at the carousel. If your bags do not appear — it happens — inform the airline counter before leaving the baggage hall. We monitor flight arrivals for all our clients and will be aware of any delays, but you should also contact us directly on WhatsApp if bags are checked through separately.

For money: there is an ATM in the arrivals hall. It works, but the exchange rate is not the best. Our advice: withdraw a small amount for immediate needs (tips, water, snacks) and get a better rate in Arusha where ATMs are more competitive. US dollars are widely accepted at lodges and for park fees, but you will need Tanzanian shillings for small purchases, local tips, and roadside stops.

Meeting Your Driver

Your driver will be waiting in the arrivals hall holding a sign with your name — just your name, no company logo, for your privacy. We monitor incoming flights in real time, so your driver will be there regardless of whether your flight is early, late, or delayed.

Typical wait time after you clear customs is ten to fifteen minutes. The arrivals hall is not large — you will find your driver near the exit doors, past the luggage carousel area.

Cell service at KIA is reliable. If you need a SIM card immediately, there are Airtel and Vodacom counters in the arrivals hall. Both carriers work well in Arusha and in most safari areas. Airtel has a slight edge in remote park areas; Vodacom is strong in Arusha and along main routes. A tourist SIM with a data package costs around $5–10 and is valid for 30 days.

The Drive from KIA to Arusha

The drive from KIA to central Arusha takes approximately 45 minutes, sometimes an hour depending on traffic. The road is mostly paved. You will pass through small towns, past Mount Meru to your left on clear days, and through coffee plantation areas as you approach Arusha.

If you are arriving after dark — which many international flights do — the road is still safe. Tanzania drives on the left, but most vehicles are left-hand drive. At night you will see the glow of cooking fires in the distance, and the silhouette of Mount Meru against the stars if the sky is clear.

There are police checkpoints along the road. Your driver handles this. You do not need to be concerned — it is a standard check of documentation.

Your First Night in Arusha

Most safari operators, including us, recommend spending your first night in Arusha rather than driving directly to the parks. A night in Arusha gives you time to recover from travel fatigue, sort out any luggage issues, and prepare properly for the safari briefing the next morning.

We work with several hotels near our Arusha office that are used by safari clients. These range from comfortable mid-range hotels to luxury options. The key criteria: secure parking, reliable electricity, and proximity to our office for the morning briefing. Your booking confirmation will include the recommended hotel for your package tier.

Before you sleep: lay out your safari clothes for the morning. Charge your camera batteries. Confirm your alarm is set. If you have been prescribed malaria medication, take the first dose that evening or as directed by your doctor. Drink plenty of water — the altitude at Arusha (1,400m) can cause mild dehydration after a long flight.

The Morning Before Your Safari

The safari briefing at our Arusha office typically runs from 7:30 to 8:30 the morning after your arrival. You will meet your guide, go through the route in detail, and receive a practical preparation checklist. Bring your booking confirmation, your passport (for park registration), and any questions you have.

This meeting is important — it is where you judge competence. Watch how the guide responds to your questions. A good guide will answer confidently and specifically. They will know the animals, the routes, and the conditions. If something feels unclear, ask us directly on WhatsApp before you depart.

Before the vehicle arrives: confirm your camera batteries are charged, any malaria medication is packed, and you have cash for park tips (your guide will advise on appropriate amounts). Do a final check of your luggage so nothing is left behind.

Departing Arusha for the Safari

Your safari vehicle — a custom Land Cruiser with elevated pop-top roof — will collect you from your hotel between 7:45 and 8:00. This is your first sight of the machine that will carry you through the parks. It is not a tourist minibus. It is a purpose-built safari vehicle with high clearance, good suspension, and open viewing windows.

Before departing Arusha, your guide will make a final ATM stop if needed. Arusha has several ATMs; the ones near the clock tower are reliable. The last stop before entering the park system is usually a brief comfort break and a chance to buy water or snacks.

And then you turn east, towards Tarangire, or north, towards the Ngorongoro highlands, or straight through the centre towards the Serengeti. The road is part of the experience. The safari has already begun.

Questions Before You Arrive?

If anything about the first 24 hours is unclear — visa requirements, what to pack for the flight, SIM card options, hotel details — message us on WhatsApp before you book. We know the logistics intimately and can walk you through anything. That is what direct booking with a local operator actually means: someone answers your questions before you spend money.
