The Great Wildebeest Migration is often called one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. Every year, 1.5 million wildebeest, 200,000 zebra, and 350,000 Thomson's gazelle make a continuous clockwise loop through the Serengeti ecosystem — crossing rivers, evading predators, and moving in columns that stretch to the horizon.

Unlike most wildlife events, the migration never stops. A private vehicle and guide gives you the flexibility to wait at a crossing point all day if needed — group tours cannot do this. See our private vs group safari comparison. It is always happening somewhere in the Serengeti. The question is not "when is the migration?" but "which phase of the migration do you want to see?"

This guide gives you the exact timing for every phase, the honest truth about which months are genuinely special versus marketing hype, and how Safaris Tanzania positions clients to maximise their probability of witnessing the event. Browse our Serengeti safari options — or tell us your target months and we will build around the migration phase.

The Migration Route: A Year in One Paragraph

The herds spend the dry season (June-October) in the northern Serengeti and Masai Mara (Kenya), crossing the Mara River back and forth in pursuit of rain-triggered grass growth. In November, they begin the long journey south as short rains arrive. By January-February they are in the southern Serengeti (Ndutu area), where calving season begins. From March, they move north-west through the western corridor. By June they are at the Grumeti River in the west. July-August they push north to the Mara River. Then the cycle begins again. See our Serengeti safari itineraries timed around each phase.

Month-by-Month Migration Guide 2026-2027

January — Calving Season Begins (Southern Serengeti)

Migration location: Southern Serengeti — Ndutu plains and surroundings

What to expect: The calving season is one of the most extraordinary wildlife events on earth. Approximately 8,000 wildebeest calves are born every single day for 3-4 weeks. The calves can stand and run within minutes of birth — they have to, because every predator in the ecosystem arrives for the feast. Cheetahs, lions, leopards, hyenas, and wild dogs all converge on the southern plains. The hunting action can be relentless and visible.

Safaris Tanzania position: We base clients at Ndutu or nearby camps in the southern Serengeti. This is our recommended alternative to the July-August river crossing crowds. Far fewer tourists, equally dramatic wildlife events.

Crowds: Low-moderate. Peak calving is January-February but the southern plains are never as crowded as the northern Mara River crossing points in July-August.

Price: Mid-range (shoulder season rates apply)

Lions follow the migration too — predator density peaks during calving season as prey concentrates on the southern plains

February — Peak Calving (Southern Serengeti)

Migration location: Southern Serengeti — Ndutu, Ndutu woodland, short grass plains

What to expect: The single best month for predator-prey interaction in East Africa. The southern short-grass plains are carpeted with wildebeest, zebra, and newborns. Cheetahs hunt in the open. Lion prides split to cover more ground. Hyena clans are hyperactive. The density of action is extraordinary.

Additional highlight: The southern Serengeti is also excellent for cheetah sightings year-round — but in February with prey everywhere and cubs to feed, sightings are outstanding.

Safaris Tanzania verdict: Our top recommendation for travellers who want migration drama without the July-August crowds and prices. February is genuinely spectacular and significantly underrated.

March — Moving North (Central Serengeti)

Migration location: Central and western Serengeti as herds begin moving north

What to expect: The long rains begin in earnest through March-April. The herds start their northward journey but movement is less concentrated and harder to track. The central Serengeti (Seronera area) still offers excellent game viewing year-round regardless of migration position.

Price: This is the beginning of lower-season pricing. Good value month.

Safaris Tanzania position: Central Serengeti camps. Focus on resident predators (lions, leopards at Seronera) with migration herds as a bonus if available.

April — Long Rains (Central to Western Corridor)

Migration location: Western Corridor, moving north

What to expect: April is the long rains peak. Some tracks become impassable. Visitor numbers drop dramatically — by 60-70% compared to peak season. The herds are in the western corridor, moving through the Grumeti concession. The landscape is green and spectacular. Some camps close for maintenance.

Honest assessment: Not the best month for a first safari. Recommended only for experienced Africa travellers who understand the trade-offs and want to experience the Serengeti in near-solitude.

Price: Green season — lowest of the year. 20% below shoulder rates.

May — Rains Ease (Western Corridor)

Migration location: Western Serengeti corridor, moving towards Grumeti River

What to expect: Rains ease in May. The western corridor has excellent game and the Grumeti River crossings begin — smaller-scale than the Mara but with enormous resident Nile crocodiles that make the crossings dramatic. May is one of Africa's best-kept safari secrets: good game, minimal tourists, green scenery, lower prices.

Safaris Tanzania verdict: Excellent value month for the Serengeti. Better than its reputation suggests.

June — Dry Season Begins (Western to Northern Serengeti)

Migration location: Moving from western corridor towards northern Serengeti

What to expect: The dry season arrives. Vegetation starts to thin, making animals easier to spot. The herds are consolidating and moving north. Game viewing improves across the board. Grumeti River crossings continue.

Crowds and price: Shoulder/peak season pricing begins. Crowds increasing from mid-June.

Safaris Tanzania position: This is a strong month — good game viewing, rising excitement about the migration, less crowded than July-August, with lower prices than the peak. We rate June highly for serious wildlife photographers who want the light and the animals without fighting for position at the Mara River.

July — First Major Mara River Crossings (Northern Serengeti)

Migration location: Northern Serengeti — Kogatende, Lamai, Mara River

What to expect: The Mara River crossings begin in earnest in July. Herds of 10,000-50,000 wildebeest stand on the southern bank of the Mara River, working up the nerve to cross. When they go, they go — tens of thousands of animals churning through a crocodile-filled river in a mass of dust, noise, and chaos. Nile crocodiles — some over 4 metres long — wait in the shallows. The spectacle lasts minutes to hours. When it is over, the herds reassemble on the northern side and the process begins again. Our Northern Serengeti safaris position you at the best crossing points with daily scouting updates.

Safaris Tanzania position: Our guides have been watching the Mara River for decades. We know the crossing points, the timing patterns, and how to position clients. We use daily scouting intelligence to know which bank the herds are building on.

Crowds and price: Peak season begins. Most vehicles in the park will be at the river. Book camp 3-6 months in advance.

August — Peak Crossings (Northern Serengeti)

Migration location: Northern Serengeti, Masai Mara (Kenya)

What to expect: August is the peak of the river crossing season. The herds are largest, the crossings are most frequent, and the predator density around the river is at its highest. Lions, leopards, and cheetahs all position near the crossing points to prey on exhausted, separated animals.

The honest reality: August is also the most crowded month in the Serengeti. At peak crossing times, 20-30 vehicles may queue along the riverbank. Safaris Tanzania guides know how to find the less-publicised crossing points and position clients away from the main circus while still witnessing the event.

Price: Highest of the year. Camps and lodges sell out. Book 4-6 months in advance minimum.

September — Late Crossings (Northern Serengeti)

Migration location: Northern Serengeti, beginning to return south

What to expect: Crossings continue but become less frequent as the herds begin their southward return. Still an excellent month with high game density and some of the best predator sightings of the year. Slightly fewer vehicles than August.

Safaris Tanzania verdict: September is underrated. Many travellers focus on July-August, leaving September relatively less crowded while still delivering crossings. Good month for the budget-conscious migration traveller.

October — Herds Return South (Central Serengeti)

Migration location: Central Serengeti, moving south

What to expect: The last of the Mara crossings. Herds begin their southward journey. The Serengeti is dry — animals concentrate at the few remaining water sources, making viewing excellent. The Seronera area has exceptional lion and leopard sightings in October as prey concentrates at the river.

Price: High season pricing, slightly below July-August peak.

November — Short Rains Arrive (Central to Southern Serengeti)

Migration location: Herds spread across central and southern Serengeti

What to expect: Short rains (2-3 weeks of afternoon showers) trigger the fresh grass growth that draws the herds south. The Serengeti turns green quickly. November is one of the least-visited months — prices drop and the parks are quiet.

Safaris Tanzania verdict: Excellent value. The Serengeti in November is beautiful and underappreciated. The migration is back in the central and southern areas, and the returning herds create excellent game viewing across the entire ecosystem.

December — Southern Serengeti (Pre-Calving)

Migration location: Southern Serengeti, approaching Ndutu

What to expect: Herds are in the southern plains, the grass is short and green, and the first pregnant wildebeest are beginning to look heavily with calf. The calving season begins in late January. December is excellent game viewing with the advantage that herds are concentrated in the southern plains — compact and visible.

Crowds: Medium — holiday season brings more international visitors in late December. The Serengeti handles this without significant crowding compared to July-August.

The Two Migration Experiences Safaris Tanzania Recommends

Option A — River Crossings (July, August, or September): For travellers who want the specific spectacle of 50,000 wildebeest crossing a crocodile-filled river. Book well in advance. Expect some vehicle crowds. Experience genuinely extraordinary. Browse our Northern Serengeti safari options for July-September departures.

Option B — Calving Season (Late January or February): For travellers who want intense predator-prey action, far fewer tourists, and a different but equally dramatic spectacle. 8,000 calves per day for 3 weeks. Lions and cheetahs hunting in the open. Our personal recommendation for most first-time travellers who have flexibility on dates. See our Southern Serengeti safari options for January-February.

What Safaris Tanzania Cannot Promise

The migration is driven by rainfall. Wildebeest follow the grass, not the calendar. Crossing points vary year to year. Safaris Tanzania scouts monitor positions daily, but no one can guarantee a specific crossing on a specific day.

What we can guarantee: our guides have tracked the Mara River for decades. We know the crossing points, the timing patterns, and the holding areas. We will put you in the right place at the right time and then wait as long as it takes. For a full seasonal breakdown of the Serengeti beyond the migration, see our Serengeti timing guide.
