There are six established routes to the summit of Kilimanjaro. Voor een eerlijke vergelijking van alle routes, zie onze complete routegids voor Kilimanjaro. Each has a different approach, a different landscape, a different duration, and a different summit success rate. The choice matters more than most people realise — Safaris Tanzania guides have taken climbers up every route for 48 years, and the route difference between a successful summit and an evacuation off the mountain is frequently the acclimatisation profile.

This guide covers all six routes honestly: who they suit, what the success rates are, what they cost, and Safaris Tanzania' recommendation for different types of climbers.

The Six Routes at a Glance

1. Lemosho Route — 7-8 Days

Summary: The best route on the mountain for most climbers. Long acclimatisation profile, diverse scenery, high success rate, and relatively few crowds.

Approach: From the west, via Londorossi Gate. Eight days allows an additional acclimatisation day at Lava Tower (4,600m).

Success rate: Approximately 90% for well-prepared climbers on the 8-day variant. 80-85% on the 7-day.

Scenery: Traverses the widest variety of climate zones — moorland, heather, alpine desert, glacial. One of the most beautiful routes visually.

Crowds: Low to medium. Less used than Machame on the southern slopes.

Safaris Tanzania price: From $1,976/person (7-day). Included in the 8-Day Kilimanjaro + Safari combo.

Safaris Tanzania recommendation: Our first recommendation for most climbers, especially those who want the best chance of reaching Uhuru Peak. The extra acclimatisation day at altitude is the difference between success and failure for many people.

2. Machame Route — 6-7 Days

Summary: The most popular route on Kilimanjaro. Good acclimatisation profile, spectacular scenery via the Shira Plateau, and a dramatic summit push via Barafu Camp. More crowded than Lemosho.

Approach: From the south-west via Machame Gate. Known as the "Whiskey Route" for its difficult reputation (versus Marangu, the "Coca-Cola Route").

Success rate: Approximately 80% on the 7-day variant. Lower on the 6-day (not recommended by Safaris Tanzania).

Scenery: Excellent. The Shira Plateau approach gives dramatic views early in the climb.

Crowds: High. Machame is the most used route — shared campsites can be busy in peak season.

Price: Comparable to Lemosho. 7-day from $1,924/person.

Safaris Tanzania verdict: A strong choice. The 7-day variant gives adequate acclimatisation. We slightly prefer Lemosho for the wider landscape variety and lower crowds, but Machame is an excellent route for its scenic value.

3. Marangu Route — 5-6 Days

Summary: The original and most accessible route. The only route with dormitory hut accommodation (as opposed to tents). Shorter acclimatisation profile means lower summit success rates.

Approach: From the south-east via Marangu Gate. Known as the "Coca-Cola Route" for its relative accessibility.

Success rate: Approximately 65% on the standard 5-day. The compressed acclimatisation profile is the limiting factor. The 6-day Marangu adds an acclimatisation day and improves success rates significantly.

Accommodation: Huts (Mandara, Horombo, Kibo) — dormitory bunks, basic but functional. The only route without camping.

Price: From $1,456/person (5-day). The most affordable Kilimanjaro route.

Safaris Tanzania verdict: We offer this route because some clients need it — the hut accommodation is easier for those who cannot carry camping equipment, and the lower price is genuine. However, we are honest: the 5-day Marangu has a lower summit success rate than the longer routes. We recommend adding the extra acclimatisation day (6-day Marangu) whenever possible. Used in our 8-Day Kilimanjaro + Safari for climbers prioritising value.

4. Rongai Route — 6-7 Days

Summary: The only route approaching from the north (Kenyan border). Less crowded, a different landscape, and a good acclimatisation profile. Less dramatic scenery than the southern routes.

Approach: From the north via the Kenyan border at Rongai Gate.

Success rate: Approximately 80-85% on the 7-day.

Scenery: Drier and more remote than the southern routes. The northern side of Kilimanjaro is less vegetated — a different, more austere beauty.

Crowds: Very low. The approach from the north means far fewer climbers.

Price: From $1,872/person (7-day).

Safaris Tanzania verdict: An excellent choice for experienced Africa travellers who want solitude and a different perspective on the mountain. Not recommended as a first Kilimanjaro attempt — the northern approach's drier landscape is less forgiving.

5. Umbwe Route — 5-6 Days

Summary: The most direct and most difficult route. Short, steep, and relentless. The lowest summit success rate due to aggressive acclimatisation demands.

Approach: From the south via Umbwe Gate. The steepest approach on the mountain.

Success rate: Approximately 60% — the lowest of all routes. The rapid altitude gain does not allow adequate acclimatisation for most climbers.

Who it suits: Experienced high-altitude mountaineers who have already summited at least one 5,000m+ peak and know their body's altitude response.

Safaris Tanzania verdict: We offer this route but strongly advise most clients against it unless they have significant high-altitude experience. The rate of failed summits and altitude medical evacuations on Umbwe is significantly higher than other routes.

6. Northern Circuit — 9-10 Days

Summary: The most comprehensive route, circumnavigating the entire mountain before the summit push. The highest success rate. The highest cost.

Success rate: 90%+. The full circumnavigation provides the longest acclimatisation profile of any route.

Crowds: Very low — the route is rarely used due to cost and duration.

Price: From $2,496/person (9-day).

Safaris Tanzania verdict: For serious mountaineers who want to experience the full mountain and have the time. Not practical for most travellers combining the climb with a safari.

The Summit Success Rate Reality

Published summit success rates are averages across all operators, all fitness levels, and all conditions. Safaris Tanzania' actual success rates are higher than the averages above because:

  • Guides who have been working Kilimanjaro for an average of 20+ years and know every symptom of AMS
  • Emergency oxygen carried on every summit attempt
  • Pulse oximeters checked at every camp — acclimatisation decisions based on data, not confidence
  • Conservative approach to summit timing: if SpO₂ (blood oxygen) is insufficient, we wait or descend. The mountain will be there next year.

The lower Kilimanjaro routes pass through Tanzania's iconic savanna — elephants and giraffes are commonly seen on the approach to the mountain

Safaris Tanzania' Recommended Route by Climber Type

  • First-time high-altitude climber, moderate fitness: Lemosho 8-day
  • First-time climber, price-conscious: Marangu 6-day (not 5-day)
  • Photography focus, wants varied scenery: Lemosho or Machame 7-day
  • Experienced mountaineer, wants solitude: Rongai 7-day
  • Maximum summit probability, time available: Northern Circuit 9-day
  • Combining with safari in 8 days: Marangu 5-day (accepted trade-off on success rate) or Lemosho 7-day + 1 safari day
