Mikumi National Park is the most accessible wildlife destination from Dar es Salaam — a 5-hour drive or a 45-minute flight puts you in the middle of hippo pools, lion prides, and some of Africa's largest buffalo herds. It is Tanzania's fourth-largest national park and one of its most overlooked.
Where the northern circuit parks (Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire) dominate safari planning for international visitors, Mikumi attracts a different traveller: the Dar es Salaam resident on a weekend escape, the business traveller with three days spare, the family wanting a proper wildlife experience without the cost or logistics of the northern circuit.
Wildlife in Mikumi
Buffalo and Elephant
Mikumi holds Tanzania's largest known buffalo herds — herds of 500 to 1,000 animals are regularly seen in the wet season. The park also has a substantial elephant population, particularly concentrated along the Lumango and Mandumba river systems. Unlike the northern parks where elephants are widely dispersed, Mikumi's elephants concentrate in specific areas during the dry season (June-October), making sightings reliable.
Lions and Predators
Lions are common and habituated to vehicles. Mikumi's lions are notable for being observed with unusual frequency in the open grasslands — fewer thickets and woodland than the Serengeti means less hiding. Hyenas are also prevalent, with a healthy spotted hyena population. Leopard sightings are less common than in the Serengeti but occur regularly in the Mikumi Valley.
Birdlife
Mikumi has 400+ bird species recorded. The Hippo Pools area is especially productive — African fish eagles, African spoonbills, yellow-fronted tinkerbirds, and the iconic lilac-breasted roller are all regularly spotted. The park's location on the migration route between the coast and inland Tanzania means seasonal visitors add to the resident population.
Hippos and Crocodiles
The Hippo Pools on the Mkhira River are the park's signature attraction. A large pod of hippos (typically 20-40 individuals) occupies the main pool year-round. Crocodiles basking on sandbanks are reliably present. This is one of the few places in Tanzania where hippos can be observed from a safe platform or viewpoint without the vehicle.
Best Time to Visit Mikumi
Dry Season (June-October)
Peak wildlife viewing season. Animals concentrate around the remaining water sources — the Hippo Pools and river systems become wildlife corridors. Buffalo and elephant concentrations are highest. Vegetation is low, making wildlife easier to spot. This is the recommended visiting period.
Green Season (November-May)
The park transforms. Migratory birds arrive (European bee-eaters, steppe eagles, barn swallows). The landscape is lush and green. Some roads become difficult. Calving season for buffalo and impala runs November-December. The park is quieter and fees are lower. Photography in the green season is spectacular — the landscapes are dramatically different from the dry season plains.
Month-by-Month Quick Reference
- June-August: Excellent — animals concentrated, roads good, cool mornings
- September-October: Excellent — peak dry season, hot afternoons, best predator viewing
- November-December: Good — short rains bringing green foliage, calving season, fewer visitors
- January-February: Good — long dry spell, animals return to water sources
- March-May: Variable — heaviest rains, some roads impassable, landscape is lush and beautiful
How to Get to Mikumi
From Dar es Salaam
Mikumi is approximately 300 km west of Dar es Salaam, a 5-hour drive via Morogoro on the Tanzania-Zambia highway (T180/T11). The road is sealed for most of the journey. A 4x4 is not required for the main park roads in dry season but is recommended for any off-piste driving or during the green season.
By Air
Airlines including Air Tanzania and coastal Aviation operate scheduled flights from Dar es Salaam to Mikumi (Mikumi Airport, also known as Skipper Airport). Flight time is approximately 45 minutes. From the airport, it's a 30-minute drive to the main park gate.

Where to Stay
Mikumi Safari Camp
The principal luxury option directly adjacent to the park. Tented accommodations with en-suite facilities, guided game drives included. Pool on site. Advance booking essential during peak season (June-October) — Mikumi is increasingly popular with Dar es Salaam's expat community and safari demand regularly fills the camp.
Mikumi Wildlife Camp
Mid-range option near the park gate. Clean, comfortable rooms, restaurant on site, reliable game drive operators. Best value for travellers who want solid comfort without premium pricing.
Campsites
Mikumi has designated public campsites within the park. Self-camping is possible for travellers with own equipment. Advance booking through Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA) is required. These are basic facilities — no electricity, pit latrines.
How Mikumi Compares to Other Parks
Mikumi vs. Northern Circuit
Mikumi cannot match the Serengeti for predator density, the Great Migration, or the sheer scale of landscape. What it offers is proximity to Dar es Salaam, lower costs, and reliable wildlife. For a 3-day safari from Dar es Salaam, Mikumi beats a rushed northern circuit trip every time — less travel fatigue, more time in the park.
Mikumi vs. Ruaha
Ruaha is remote, wild, and dramatically undervisited. It offers a more remote experience with larger herds and a wider range of ecosystems. Mikumi is more accessible and less expensive. For first-time safari visitors who want a proper wildlife experience without international-level pricing, Mikumi is the practical choice.
Mikumi Safari Costs 2026
Mikumi park fees (2026 rates, subject to TANAPA adjustment):
- Entry fee: $50 per person per day (non-residents)
- Vehicle fee: $30 per day for private vehicles
- Camping fee: $30 per person per night
- Concession fees: Vary by accommodation
A 3-day/2-night organised Mikumi safari from Dar es Salaam including transport, park fees, accommodation, and game drives typically ranges from $450-$750 per person depending on accommodation tier.
What to Bring to Mikumi
Mikumi is similar to the northern parks in terms of packing requirements. See our safari packing list for the full guide. Specific Mikumi notes:
- Binoculars — essential for birding and for viewing hippos safely from the platform
- Dust protection — the park roads can be dusty in dry season; a light scarf or buff is useful
- Camera with telephoto lens — hippos and buffalo can be photographed from the platform at reasonable distances
- Malaria prophylaxis — Mikumi is a lower-altitude park (600-1,200m) but malaria risk exists year-round; consult your doctor
