May sits at the tail end of Tanzania's long rainy season. Early May still carries the character of April — intermittent afternoon rains, rim roads that are occasionally muddy, very low tourist volumes. By the second half of the month, the rains taper and the crater begins its transition into the dry season. For travellers with flexibility, the third and fourth weeks of May offer an unusual combination: green-season pricing, post-rain lushness, and the beginning of the improved conditions that peak in June–October. The crater is never better value.

Weather in May
The Ngorongoro Crater rim in May receives less rain than April. The long rains are easing — not dramatically ending, but the frequency and intensity of rainfall decreases through the month. Rim roads are in better condition by late May than at any point since January. The crater floor access tracks are generally excellent by the third week of the month.
Morning game drives — the recommended 6am descent — are more consistently dry in late May than in any previous month since the short rains began in November. The crater floor is often clear at dawn, with the mist that characterized April mornings less prevalent as rainfall decreases. Morning conditions for the early descent are among the best of the green season.
The Crater Floor in May
The crater floor in May is still lush and green — the transformation from dry-season brown has not yet occurred. The Lerai Forest is dense and productive. Lake Magadi, fed by the season's rainfall, is in good condition and flamingo numbers are building toward their mid-year peak. The alkaline lake attracts significant bird activity through May.
The fundamental characteristic of Ngorongoro — a self-contained ecosystem with approximately 30,000 large animals that are permanent residents — does not change with the seasons. Lions, hyenas, elephants, buffaloes, hippos, and flamingos are present and active in May regardless of rainfall. The difference from peak season is one of concentration and visibility rather than presence.
The black rhinos — approximately 30 in the crater — are somewhat easier to find in May than in April as the Lerai Forest begins to thin slightly with reducing rainfall. They are still difficult — this is always a rare sighting — but May positioning with an experienced guide gives a better chance than April.

Crowds and Pricing
May is still low season at Ngorongoro. Visitor numbers are a fraction of peak-season levels. Crater descents are rarely full. At any sighting, you are unlikely to share with more than 4–6 vehicles. Accommodation on the crater rim has full availability and green-season pricing — typically 30–50% below peak-season rates.
Late May — from approximately the 15th onward — is the sweet spot of the month. The rains have largely ceased, the roads are at their best, and the wildlife is distributed across a crater floor that is still lush and green. Peak-season pricing has not yet been applied. The best rim lodges are available. The crater descents are not yet heavily booked.
Photography in Late May
Late May is one of the finest photography windows at Ngorongoro. The crater floor retains its green lushness from the rains. The afternoon cloud formations — still building but less dramatic than April — create the kind of layered skies that produce exceptional landscape images. The flamingos at Lake Magadi are present in good numbers. The morning mist on the crater floor, while less frequent than in April, still occurs and still produces the atmospheric conditions that photographers prize.
The combination of improved conditions (compared to April) and reduced crowds (compared to June) makes late May one of the most practical and rewarding months for Ngorongoro photography.
Why May, Not July: The Value Case
July has the dry-season reputation and the guaranteed wildlife concentrations. May has the green-season price, the post-rain lushness, and the solitude. The same client who pays $416 per person per night for a Ngorongoro rim lodge in July can pay $260–$291 in late May for the same lodge — and encounter a crater that is equally wildlife-rich, significantly greener, and served by a fraction of the vehicles.
For first-time visitors who want the classic Ngorongoro experience — dense wildlife, accessible roads, reliable sightings — July and August are the appropriate months. For visitors who have been before, or who want to experience the crater at its most beautiful and most affordable, late May is the best-kept secret in the Ngorongoro calendar.
