May sits at the tail end of Tanzania's long rainy season. Early May still carries the character of April — heavy afternoon rains, muddy rim roads, very low tourist volumes. By the second half of the month, the rains taper and the crater begins its transition into the dry season. For travellers with flexibility, the third and fourth weeks of May offer an unusual combination: green-season pricing, post-rain lushness, and the beginning of the improved conditions that peak in June–October.

Weather in May
Early May (weeks one and two): expect rain similar to April. Afternoons are frequently wet. Mornings are clearer and game drives proceed normally. The crater floor is intensely green — more lush than at any other time of year. Wildlife density is unchanged because the Ngorongoro Crater is an enclosed ecosystem; the animals have nowhere to leave to.
Late May (weeks three and four): rain frequency and intensity drop noticeably. By the last week of May, many years produce dry mornings and only light evening rain. Road conditions on the crater rim improve markedly. This is the beginning of the shoulder season, before the June–October peak crowds and pricing arrive.
The crater floor altitude is approximately 1,800 metres. Even in May, morning temperatures on the crater rim (2,300 metres) are cold — bring a fleece and a windproof layer for the descent drive at dawn.
Wildlife in May
May wildlife in the Ngorongoro Crater is excellent. The enclosed caldera ecosystem means the crater's resident population — approximately 25,000 animals — is always present regardless of season or rainfall. You are not dependent on migration patterns or seasonal movements.
Big Five availability in May:
- Lion. The Ngorongoro lion population (around 60–70 individuals) is permanently resident. May lion sightings are reliable. Pride activity is typically morning and late afternoon; midday heat pushes them to shade.
- Elephant. Elephant bulls visit the crater floor regularly. The lush May vegetation concentrates them near the forest edges on the crater walls.
- Buffalo. Large herds are present year-round on the crater floor grasslands. May's green grass keeps herds spread across the plains rather than concentrated at water — you may need to cover more ground to find the main herd.
- Black rhino. Ngorongoro's population of approximately 26–30 black rhino is the primary place in Tanzania to see this critically endangered species. May sightings are consistent with the rest of the year — spotting them depends on their location on the day, which your guide will track from ranger reports.
- Leopard. Leopards in the crater are seen less reliably than the other four — they inhabit the forested crater walls and the Lerai Forest. May sightings are possible; the lush vegetation gives them more cover than the dry season.
The Lake Magadi flamingo population peaks with the rains — May often shows large concentrations of lesser flamingos on the soda lake, which provides one of the most photographed views in the crater.

Crowds and Pricing
May is one of the two quietest months for Tanzania tourism (alongside April). Safari camp and lodge pricing is at its lowest of the year — typically 20–35% below peak (July–August) rates. Park fees remain constant throughout the year.
What this means in practice: the crater floor is very quiet. In peak season (July–August), a good sighting of a lion pride can attract 15–20 vehicles simultaneously. In May, you may have the same sighting with two or three vehicles, or alone. For photographers and travellers who find vehicle crowding around sightings frustrating, May is worth serious consideration despite the rain.
Practical Notes for May
Accommodation: Some crater-rim lodges reduce services or close for maintenance in April–May. Safaris Tanzania will confirm which properties are fully operational for your specific dates. The main mid-range crater rim options (Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge, Rhino Lodge) typically operate year-round. Premium properties such as andBeyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge operate throughout May.
Roads: The descent road into the crater (a single-lane, steep dirt track) can be slippery in early May. Safaris Tanzania Land Cruisers handle this reliably. Inform Kassim if anyone in your group has concerns about steep descents — he will brief your guide accordingly.
Timing your trip: If you have flexibility within May, aim for the third week onward. The weather is noticeably better and the roads significantly easier than early May, while pricing remains at green-season levels.
Is May Right for You?
May suits travellers who: are flexible on dates and can target the latter half of the month; prioritise value and low crowds over guaranteed dry weather; want the crater at its most photogenic (green grass, dramatic skies, flamingos on the lake); and have realistic expectations about possible afternoon rain.
May does not suit travellers who: need guaranteed good weather every day; are planning a once-in-a-lifetime trip and cannot accept the possibility of a rain-affected morning; or prefer the social atmosphere of high season when the parks and camps are livelier.
