September is one of the best months to visit Ngorongoro Crater and one of the least crowded of the dry season. July and August have the highest visitor volumes. By September, those crowds have eased — but the wildlife remains at dry-season concentration levels. The combination makes September an excellent choice for travellers who want peak-quality game viewing without peak-season crowds.

Weather in September

September remains solidly dry. No rain. The crater floor is golden-brown. Temperatures on the floor reach 22–25 degrees by midday, cooling significantly toward evening. The crater rim at 2,300m is cold at dawn — 10 to 14 degrees — and still requires layers for the early descent. The dry-season cold begins to ease slightly compared to June–August but remains present throughout September.

Wildlife in September

Wildlife quality in September is equivalent to July and August. Water sources are at their minimum, concentrating animals at Lake Magadi, the Munge River, and the Ngoitokitok springs. Predators follow the concentrations.

  • Lions — Visible and active across the crater floor. The Ngorongoro pride system is one of the most studied in Africa, and September delivers the same high sighting frequency as the July–August peak.
  • Black rhino — September rhino sightings remain excellent. The low vegetation gives visibility into the woodland zones where rhino are active in the early morning.
  • Elephants — Bull elephants continue to visit the crater floor via the Lerai Forest. September is a good month for elephant observation in the forest edge in the early morning.
  • Cheetahs — Eastern crater plains. September sightings consistent with the dry season pattern — open terrain, visible hunting behaviour.
  • Wildebeest and zebra — The resident crater herds are present in September. Unlike the Serengeti herds, Ngorongoro's resident wildebeest and zebra do not migrate — they are here year-round.

Crowds in September

Noticeably lower than July and August. At a lion sighting, you might share with 8–15 vehicles rather than 20–30. The 6am descent is still recommended but the difference between early and mid-morning is less stark than during peak months. Overall a more spacious and relaxed experience than the July–August peak.

Photography in September

September light over the Ngorongoro Crater is at its most reliable — clear morning skies, strong directional light on the crater floor, and the golden-brown palette of the dry season. The crater's scale means September photography here captures something that smaller parks cannot: an entire ecosystem in a single frame, from the acacia woodland on the far wall to the hippo pools below.

The Lerai Forest in September has a particular quality — the canopy is less dense than in the wet season, which means more light penetration and better chances of photographing the forest-dwelling species: elephants moving through, leopards in the upper branches, and colobus monkeys visible in the fig trees. The Munge River area produces clean, open wildlife photography with the crater walls as a dramatic backdrop.

September vs August: The Value Argument

August and September deliver equivalent wildlife quality in Ngorongoro Crater. The black rhino, the lions, the flamingos at Lake Magadi — all are equally present in both months. The difference is in the crowd numbers and the price. August commands peak-season rates and peak-season volumes. September pricing at many properties drops toward shoulder-season levels while the wildlife remains at peak-season quality.

When you book through an international broker, you pay August prices to see August wildlife in September. When you book directly with Safaris Tanzania, you know exactly what you are getting at September rates. This is the practical benefit of booking with an operator who sets pricing based on current market conditions rather than following the broker-updated brochure prices that can lag real availability by months.

September Ngorongoro and the Serengeti

In September, the Mara River crossings in northern Serengeti are still happening — the main herds do not move south until October or November. A September itinerary combining northern Serengeti with Ngorongoro Crater delivers both Mara River crossings and the full crater experience. The 7-day Serengeti and Ngorongoro itinerary is the recommended format.

The combination works logistically: fly into Kilimanjaro, drive or fly to the northern Serengeti for 3 nights (Mara River crossings), then drive south to Ngorongoro for a full crater day, then return to Arusha or continue to Tarangire. September weather on this route is dry and road conditions are excellent throughout. Safaris Tanzania plans these combined September itineraries from live conditions reports and will advise on the specific positioning of camps based on where the migration herds are located in the week of your travel.

What to Expect on a September Ngorongoro Game Drive

A full-day Ngorongoro Crater game drive in September typically begins with the 6am descent (mandatory at most camps for the best wildlife hours). The first three hours — from 6am to 9am — deliver the majority of significant sightings. Lions are most active in the early morning; the crater floor's animals are generally more visible in the first hours of daylight before the midday heat drives them to shade.

The crater is 600 metres deep and has a 20-kilometre diameter floor. In one full day, you can cover most of the accessible areas: Lake Magadi in the southwest (flamingos, hippos), the Lerai Forest in the north (elephants, leopards), the open plains in the southeast (lions, cheetahs), and the Munge River area (hippos, crocodiles, diverse waterbirds). A competent guide manages the routing to maximise your time at the best sightings while covering the crater's diversity.

September is also when Safaris Tanzania begins to see the first short-rains activity in the hills outside the crater — afternoon clouds building on the rim, the occasional shower. The crater floor itself remains dry, but the scenery gains dramatic cloud formations that add to landscape photography.
