One of the first questions travellers ask when considering a Tanzania safari is the cost. It is a fair question — Tanzania is not a budget destination, and the difference between a $1,248 and a $4,160 per-person safari is real and meaningful. This guide gives you honest, detailed pricing for 2026 so you can budget accurately and avoid the confusion that often surrounds safari costs.

All figures below come from Safaris Tanzania — a Tanzanian ground operator based in Arusha, running safaris since 1978. We are not an agency. What you read is what you pay.

What Is Included in a Safari Price?

Before looking at numbers, it helps to understand what a reputable operator's quote should include. An all-inclusive Tanzania safari price typically covers:

  • All national park entry fees (Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire, Lake Manyara)
  • Vehicle hire — a four-wheel-drive Land Cruiser with pop-up roof
  • A professional, licensed safari guide
  • Accommodation as specified (camping, lodge, or luxury camp)
  • All meals during the safari
  • Water in the vehicle
  • Airport or hotel pick-up and drop-off in Arusha

What is typically excluded: international flights, Tanzania visa ($52 on arrival), travel insurance, gratuities to guides ($16–25 per person per day is customary), optional balloon safaris, and personal purchases.

Tanzania Park Fees 2026

Park fees are a fixed government cost set by the Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA) and are the same whether you book through an operator or an agency. Here are the current rates that affect most northern circuit safaris:

  • Serengeti National Park: $85 per person, per day
  • Ngorongoro Conservation Area: $85 per person, plus $307 per vehicle ( crater entry fee)
  • Tarangire National Park: $55 per person, per day
  • Lake Manyara National Park: $55 per person, per day

These fees are payable in US dollars and are non-negotiable. For a 5-day northern circuit visiting Serengeti, Ngorongoro, and Tarangire, park fees alone come to roughly $385–410 per person. Any quote that does not account for these costs is incomplete.

Safari Cost by Accommodation Tier

Budget Safari: $156–$364 per person per day

Budget safaris use public campsite accommodations or very simple guesthouses. Meals are prepared by the safari chef. You sleep in tented accommodation at established campsites inside or near the national parks.

A 5-day budget northern circuit at this level typically costs $832–$1,144 per person, inclusive of park fees, accommodation, meals, and guiding. The vehicle is a proper 4WD Land Cruiser — the same chassis used at every price tier. What differs is the accommodation.

Budget safari is genuine and honest. The wildlife experience is identical to what you would see on a luxury safari — the same parks, the same animals, the same guide knowledge. Do not dismiss it because of the price.

Mid-Range Safari: $364–$728 per person per day

Mid-range safaris use comfortable lodges or private tented camps — typically rated 3 to 4 stars, with en-suite bathrooms, good food, and professional service. This is where most travellers land, and it represents strong value.

A 5-day mid-range northern circuit typically costs $1,456–$1,976 per person. A 7-day safari at this level runs $1,976–$2,912 per person.

See the 5-day northern circuit for a detailed itinerary at this price point, or the 7-day Serengeti and Ngorongoro for a week-long option.

Luxury Safari: $728–$1,560+ per person per day

Luxury safaris use exclusive tented camps and lodges — often in private conservancies adjacent to the national parks, which can mean lower park fees and more remote wildlife experiences. Food, wine, and service are comparable to a high-end hotel.

A 5-day luxury safari starts at roughly $2,600 per person and can extend to $5,200–$8,320 per person for the most exclusive camps during peak season.

Low Season vs High Season Pricing

Tanzania has two distinct pricing seasons. The high season runs from July through October and from December through February. This is when the Great Migration is in the Serengeti and the weather is driest — peak wildlife viewing conditions.

The low or "green" season runs from April through May and November. Lodge and camp rates drop by 20–40%. The wildlife remains exceptional — the calving season in February and March is extraordinary — and the landscapes are green and beautiful. Travellers on a budget who do not need to see the Migration crossings should seriously consider the green season.

The Broker Markup: Why Booking Direct Matters

If you book through a travel agency or online broker — companies based in Europe, the UK, or North America — the quoted price typically includes a 25–35% agency commission. This commission is invisible to you. The agency pays the ground operator their reduced rate, keeps the difference, and you receive a lower-quality safari than you paid for.

When you book direct with a ground operator like Safaris Tanzania, you pay the operator rate. There is no commission layer. The same $1,664 per person that an agency quotes you pays for a full-quality safari with Safaris Tanzania — not a reduced version of one. Read our full explanation of why booking direct works better.

7-Day Safari Cost Example

Here is a realistic cost breakdown for a 7-day northern circuit safari for two people in a private safari (own vehicle) at mid-range lodge level, departing from Arusha:

  • Park fees (Serengeti 7 days × $85 × 2): $1,194
  • Ngorongoro crater vehicle fee: $307
  • Park fees (Tarangire, Lake Manyara): $220 per person × 2 = $441
  • Guide, vehicle, fuel, logistics: $1,872 total
  • Accommodation (6 nights mid-range lodges, double occupancy): $1,872 per person × 2 = $3,744
  • Meals and water: included in lodge rates
  • Total for two: approximately $7,558
  • Per person: approximately $3,778

This is a real quote range — not a marketing number. Compare it against agency quotes for the same itinerary and you will typically find agency versions of this trip priced at $4,680–5,500 per person for the same lodge category.

How to Get an Exact Safari Price

Every safari is custom-built. The cost depends on your group size, travel dates, chosen accommodation tier, itinerary length, and specific parks. Rather than guessing from a website, the fastest way to get an accurate price is to WhatsApp us directly.

Kassim at Safaris Tanzania responds personally to every enquiry, usually within two hours during Arusha business hours. Give us your dates, the number of people, your accommodation preference, and the parks you most want to visit — we will send a detailed itinerary with exact pricing within a few hours.

There is no cost for this. We are happy to quote. We know our vehicles, our guides, and our camps intimately, so the quote you receive is a real plan — not an estimate.

Is a Tanzania Safari Worth the Cost?

This question comes up often. The honest answer is that Tanzania offers one of the world's premier wildlife experiences — the Serengeti ecosystem alone supports the largest terrestrial mammal migration on earth and the densest predator populations in Africa. Ngorongoro Crater is a natural amphitheatre of wildlife that consistently exceeds expectations. Tarangire in the dry season has elephant herds of 300 or more.

A safari is not a holiday. It is an experience. The memories from six days in the Serengeti — watching a lion pride on the move, a leopard in a marula tree, the Migration in full motion — are not comparable to any other travel experience. Whether the cost is worth it is a personal decision. But from a value perspective, a well-planned Tanzania safari is among the most rewarding wildlife investments you can make.

Frequently Asked Questions — Safari Costs

How much does a Tanzania safari cost for 2 people?

A 5-day mid-range safari for two people typically costs $2,912–$3,952 total ($1,456–$1,976 per person), inclusive of park fees, accommodation, meals, and guiding. Agency-quoted versions of the same itinerary typically run $4,680–$5,720 per person.

Is Tanzania safari expensive compared to Kenya?

Tanzania and Kenya are comparable in price. Tanzania offers larger ecosystems (the Serengeti is 5× the size of the Masai Mara) and greater wildlife diversity. A 5-day safari at $1,456 per person is exceptional value for the wildlife you see.

What is the cheapest month for a Tanzania safari?

April and May are the cheapest months — lodge rates drop 30–40% during the long rains. November also offers shoulder-season pricing with excellent game viewing. The wildlife remains excellent, and the landscapes are lush.

Are Tanzania safari park fees included in the tour price?

At Safaris Tanzania, yes — all park fees are included in our quoted price. Park fees (set by TANAPA) are: Serengeti $85.25/person/day, Ngorongoro $74.50/person/day, Tarangire $50.15/person/day. These are the same for every operator — no operator can discount them.

Can I do a Tanzania safari for under $1,040?

Yes. A 3-day budget camping safari starts at $832 per person, inclusive of park fees, camping accommodation, meals, and guiding. The wildlife experience is identical to a luxury safari — same parks, same animals, same guides.

Why are Tanzania safari prices so high?

Park fees fund anti-poaching, ranger stations, and ecosystem management across vast areas. When you pay $85/day for the Serengeti, you directly fund the protection of 1.5 million wildebeest and one of Africa's most critical ecosystems. Tanzania invests heavily in conservation — this is not a cost, it is an investment in the world's wildlife.
