June 2026 is one of the most underrated safari months in the entire Tanzania calendar — and one that experienced travellers return to repeatedly. The long rains of April and May are over. The dry season has begun. The wildebeest herds are crossing the Grumeti River in the Western Serengeti — the first major river crossing of the annual migration. The parks are not yet at July–August crowd levels. And pricing is 15–25% below peak. If you want the migration experience without the August crush, June 2026 is the month.
What the Migration is Doing in June 2026
By June 2026, the wildebeest herds are in the Western Corridor and approaching or crossing the Grumeti River. The Grumeti is the first major river obstacle on the migration's northern circuit — and it is home to some of the largest Nile crocodiles in Africa, waiting in deep pools for the herds to arrive.
The Grumeti crossings are smaller in scale than the Mara River crossings of July–August, but they are often more chaotic and more predatory. The crocodiles have been waiting since the previous year's crossings. The wildebeest arrive with no experience of what awaits. The crossings can be frantic — herds surging into the river, crocodiles lunging, panic on both banks. It is genuinely extraordinary to witness, and in early June your vehicle may be one of very few present.
The exact timing of the crossings varies year to year depending on 2026 rainfall patterns. In most years, the main crossings happen between late May and mid-June. Safaris Tanzania monitors real-time movement reports from guides in the Western Corridor and positions clients accordingly — a direct-operator advantage that brokers selling from overseas cannot replicate.
Weather in June 2026
June is the start of the cool dry season. The long rains ended in May and the landscape is in transition. Early June may still show traces of green from the rains; by late June, the characteristic golden-brown of the Serengeti dry season is established.
Temperatures are cooler than the peak dry months: 18–25°C during the day, dropping to 10–15°C at night and early mornings. The 6am game drive start in June requires a fleece — it is genuinely cold before the sun clears the horizon. By mid-morning it is comfortable.
Road conditions are excellent throughout the Serengeti in June. The late-rains mud has dried, tracks are firm, and all circuits are fully accessible. Visibility is outstanding. Dust is moderate — significantly less than July and August.
Wildlife Beyond the Migration
The Serengeti's resident wildlife is excellent in June. The dry season concentrates game around permanent water sources. The Seronera Valley — with its year-round river, large resident lion population, and leopards in the riverine trees — is consistently productive.
The Western Corridor in June is the place to be for the Grumeti crossings, but it also offers outstanding resident wildlife. Topi are abundant in the Western Corridor grasslands — June is when they are most visible against the drying landscape. Buffalo herds form large aggregations near water. Lion prides that spent the wet season dispersed across the wider corridor are now concentrated and active.
Crowds and Pricing in June 2026
June is noticeably less crowded than July and significantly less crowded than August. A June 2026 safari in the first three weeks of the month offers full wildlife activity with 30–50% fewer vehicles at sightings than August.
Accommodation rates in June are at the intermediate level between green season lows and peak season highs — typically 15–25% below August pricing at the same property. Booking 3–4 months ahead is generally sufficient for most camp options. The very top luxury properties in the northern Serengeti fill earlier, but mid-range options are broadly available.
Which Part of the Serengeti for June 2026?
For the Grumeti crossings specifically — the Western Corridor is the place to be. Camps in this area are fewer and less well known than the central Seronera camps, but they offer access to the crossings and to the distinctive Western Corridor landscape.
For the broadest combination of wildlife without committing to a specific event, the central Serengeti's Seronera Valley remains excellent in June. The resident lion prides, leopards in the riverine trees, and concentration of game near the Seronera River are consistently productive through the entire dry season.
For travellers combining a June trip with plans to continue north for July or August crossings, a central Serengeti base in June followed by a northern Serengeti move in late June or July is the optimal circuit.
June vs July: Is the Wait Worth It?
If your primary goal is the Mara River crossings in the north, July is objectively better — the herds reach the Mara in July. But if you want excellent wildlife, dramatic crossing events, manageable crowds, and significantly lower prices, June delivers everything most travellers actually want from a Serengeti safari.
For a 7-day June 2026 itinerary, Safaris Tanzania recommends: two nights in Tarangire, one day in Ngorongoro Crater, two nights in central Serengeti, and one to two nights in the Western Corridor for Grumeti crossing access.
