A good Serengeti Ngorongoro itinerary is not just a list of parks. It is a timing problem: how many hours you spend driving, when you enter the Serengeti, how much daylight you have for game drives, and whether the Ngorongoro Crater becomes a proper wildlife day or a rushed stop on the way home.
The honest answer for most travellers is simple: 5 days is the minimum, 7 days is the sweet spot, and 10 days is the unhurried version. Below is how to choose without paying for days you do not need, or cutting so tight that the safari feels like transfers with animals in between.
Quick answer: which route fits you?
- Choose 5 days if this is your first safari, budget matters, and you want the classic Northern Circuit without wasted time.
- Choose 7 days if Serengeti predator sightings, slower pacing, and a full Ngorongoro Crater day matter more than the lowest price.
- Choose 10 days if you want Tarangire, Lake Manyara, central Serengeti, Ngorongoro, and enough flexibility for photography or family pacing.
Why Serengeti and Ngorongoro belong together
The Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater solve different parts of the safari puzzle. The Serengeti gives you scale: open plains, predator territories, migration movement, kopjes, and long game drives where sightings build over hours. Ngorongoro gives you density: a compact crater floor where lions, elephants, buffalo, hippos, hyenas, and black rhino can all be possible in one descent.
That difference is why we rarely recommend choosing one over the other for a first Tanzania safari. A Serengeti-only trip can feel like you missed the crater. A Ngorongoro-only trip can feel too short and too crowded. Together, they create the classic northern Tanzania route: big wilderness first, concentrated crater finale second.

5-day Serengeti Ngorongoro itinerary: the efficient classic
A 5-day itinerary is the shortest road route we consider properly balanced. It normally starts from Arusha, adds Tarangire or Lake Manyara as the first park, spends two nights in the Serengeti, then finishes with Ngorongoro Crater before returning to Arusha.
- Day 1: Arusha to Tarangire or Lake Manyara. Afternoon game drive and overnight near Karatu or inside the park.
- Day 2: Drive through the Ngorongoro highlands into the Serengeti. Afternoon game drive on arrival.
- Day 3: Full Serengeti game drive. This is the day that gives the route its real value.
- Day 4: Morning Serengeti game drive, then return toward Ngorongoro for the night.
- Day 5: Crater descent, picnic lunch on the crater floor, then drive back to Arusha.
This works well for couples, friends, and families who want the essential wildlife circuit at a transparent price. On Safaris Tanzania itineraries, the 5-day Northern Circuit starts around the $1,400 per person range depending on season and lodge tier. See the 5-day Northern Circuit itinerary for the closest ready-made structure.
7-day Serengeti Ngorongoro itinerary: the best balance
Seven days is the route we recommend most often because it removes the pressure from the Serengeti section. Instead of one full day and two transfer-heavy half days, you can hold position in the Serengeti long enough for your guide to respond to wildlife movement.
That matters. Lions do not perform on schedule. Cheetah hunts depend on light, wind, prey distance, and patience. Leopard sightings often require checking riverine trees more than once. With seven days, you have enough time for your guide to work the area properly instead of racing to the next lodge.
A strong 7-day route usually includes Tarangire, Lake Manyara or Karatu, central Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, and a final return to Arusha. It normally starts around the $1,800 per person range for a direct-operator mid-range version. Compare the 7-day Serengeti and Ngorongoro itinerary if you want the safest first-safari choice.

10-day itinerary: when slow travel is worth it
A 10-day Serengeti Ngorongoro itinerary is not just the 7-day route with filler. Done properly, it changes the quality of the trip. You can give Tarangire a full day, add Lake Manyara without stealing time from the Serengeti, spend more nights in central or northern Serengeti, and still descend into Ngorongoro without fatigue.
This is the best choice for photographers, multi-generation families, honeymooners who want less road pressure, and travellers visiting during a migration window. If you are coming in July to October for possible northern Serengeti river crossings, or January to March for southern Serengeti and Ndutu calving season, extra days help you position the safari around wildlife movement instead of around a fixed hotel map.
The 10-day Ultimate Tanzania itinerary starts around the $2,600 per person range and is the better fit when the goal is not simply to “see” Serengeti and Ngorongoro, but to experience them without constantly watching the clock.
Best season for a Serengeti Ngorongoro route
The route works year-round, but the best month depends on what you are trying to see. January to March is excellent for southern Serengeti and Ndutu calving season, with predator action and green landscapes. June to October is dry season, with easier wildlife visibility, peak demand, and higher lodge pressure. November and early December can be excellent value if you accept short rains and softer road conditions.
Ngorongoro Crater is less seasonal than the Serengeti because the crater floor holds resident wildlife year-round. The trade-off is crowding. In peak season, the crater can feel busy, especially around lion and rhino sightings. A private direct-operator itinerary helps because your guide can time the descent, picnic stop, and exit instead of following a large-group schedule.

What to ask before booking
Before you compare quotes, ask three questions: how many nights are actually inside or near the Serengeti, whether Ngorongoro Crater descent fees are included, and whether the vehicle is private or shared. Cheap-looking itineraries often save money by cutting the Serengeti short, excluding crater fees, or using group vehicles with rotating seats.
Safaris Tanzania is direct from the operator: we own the vehicles, employ the guides, and quote the route clearly. No broker markup, no vague “from” price that becomes different once park fees appear. If you send us your dates, group size, and comfort level, Kassim will tell you whether 5, 7, or 10 days is the right Serengeti Ngorongoro itinerary for your trip.
