The question Safaris Tanzania hears most often from first-time visitors is not “which park?” — it is “how many days do I actually need?”

The answer depends on what you want to see, how much leave you can take, and what you want to feel when you get home. 5 days gives you an introduction. 7 days gives you a complete northern circuit. 10 days gives you depth — the kind that changes how you understand what you are seeing.

This guide compares all three honestly, including real pricing and real wildlife trade-offs, so you can make the right call.

Quick Comparison Table

DurationParksWildlifeMid-Range Cost (Shoulder)Best For
5 Days2–3 parksGood$1,144–$1,456Safari + beach combo, limited leave
7 Days3 parksExcellent$1,456–$1,872First-timers, complete northern circuit
10 Days3–4 parks + optional ZanzibarExceptional$2,288–$3,328Wildlife enthusiasts, return visitors

The one-paragraph answer: 5 days = northern essentials (Serengeti + Ngorongoro, with Tarangire as a half-day). 7 days = full northern circuit without rushing. 10 days = complete safari plus a buffer day, southern Serengeti access, or a Zanzibar extension.

Wildebeest crossing the Mara River during the Great Migration — the signature wildlife event of a Tanzania safari
The Great Migration river crossings are the signature wildlife event of a Tanzania safari. September and October are peak months for northern Serengeti crossings — they require at least 7 days in your itinerary to access properly.

5 Days — Is It Enough?

A 5-day safari is an introduction, not a compromise. You will see remarkable wildlife. But you will be making trade-offs about which parks to include and how much time to spend in each.

What 5 days covers:

  • Day 1: Arusha to Tarangire (1.5 hours). Afternoon game drive. Overnight Tarangire.
  • Day 2: Morning Tarangire, then drive to central Serengeti (4 hours). Afternoon game drive on arrival.
  • Day 3: Full day Serengeti — central zone or northern depending on migration position.
  • Day 4: Morning game drive, then drive to Ngorongoro Crater rim (3 hours). Sunset at the crater rim.
  • Day 5: Early morning Ngorongoro Crater game drive (6am–1pm), then drive back to Arusha (2.5 hours).

What you miss with 5 days: You have one full day in the Serengeti. If the wildlife is not cooperating on day 3, you have no second chance. You also cannot fit Lake Manyara, the Ndutu region, or the northern Serengeti migration crossings without cutting another park.

Who 5 days is right for:

  • Travellers combining a safari with a Zanzibar beach extension (the most common combination Safaris Tanzania books — 5 days safari + 4 days Zanzibar is a complete Tanzania trip)
  • Business travellers with limited annual leave
  • Fly-in safaris where the flight reduces road transit time significantly

Lioness on the hunt in Tarangire National Park — Tarangire is included in most 5-day northern circuit itineraries
Tarangire in a 5-day itinerary: the park is compact enough for a half-day visit on the way between Arusha and the Serengeti, without eating into your Serengeti or Ngorongoro time.

7 Days — The Sweet Spot

Seven days is the most booked duration for the Tanzania northern circuit — and for good reason. It covers the three core parks (Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire) with enough time to do each properly, while still fitting within a standard holiday.

What 7 days covers:

  • Day 1: Arusha to Tarangire. Afternoon game drive. Overnight Tarangire.
  • Day 2: Morning Tarangire, then drive to central Serengeti (4 hours). Afternoon game drive.
  • Day 3: Full day Serengeti — central zone or northern depending on migration.
  • Day 4: Full day Serengeti — a different zone. Morning and afternoon game drives.
  • Day 5: Morning game drive, then drive to Ngorongoro Crater rim. Afternoon at leisure.
  • Day 6: Full day Ngorongoro Crater — 6am to 4pm on the crater floor.
  • Day 7: Morning at crater rim or optional Lake Manyara half-day, then drive back to Arusha.

Why the extra days matter: You have two full days in the Serengeti instead of one. This is the single biggest quality difference between a 5-day and a 7-day safari. If a leopard is hunting in one area on day 3, you have day 4 to return — rather than having already moved on. The extra day also means you can explore a different zone of the Serengeti and do both morning and afternoon game drives properly.

Who 7 days is right for:

  • First-time safari visitors who want the complete northern circuit without rushing
  • Photographers who need multiple sessions in the same location under different lighting conditions
  • Anyone who wants the safari to feel like a real experience, not a highlights reel

7-Day Pricing (mid-range tented camps)

SeasonPrice per person

Ngorongoro Crater at sunrise — the crater floor is one of the most wildlife-dense locations on earth and a centrepiece of any 7-day northern circuit itinerary
Ngorongoro Crater: the floor covers 264 square kilometres and holds approximately 30,000 large animals. In a 7-day itinerary, you have a full day on the crater floor — which is the minimum needed to do it justice.

10 Days — The Complete Safari

Ten days is where a Tanzania safari becomes transformative rather than merely impressive. With 10 days you can add a fourth park, include a rest day, spend two full days in the Serengeti (allowing you to really learn the ecosystem), or access the Ndutu region during calving season.

What 10 days covers:

  • Days 1–2: Tarangire (2 full days — the park is large enough to need both)
  • Days 3–4: Central Serengeti (2 full days, different zones)
  • Days 5–6: Northern Serengeti / Mara River (for September–October migration crossings) or Ndutu (for January–March calving)
  • Day 7: Full day Ngorongoro Crater
  • Day 8: Lake Manyara or optional conservancy extension
  • Days 9–10: Return to Arusha. Optional Maasai village visit or Zanzibar beach extension.

The rest-day argument: Most safari clients report that day 4 or 5 is when early starts and midday heat catch up. Ten days allows a genuine rest day mid-safari — not a wasted day, but a day to process what you have already seen. Safari fatigue is real. A rested traveller sees more on the last three days than an exhausted one does on the first three.

Who 10 days is right for:

  • Wildlife enthusiasts who want to understand the ecosystem, not just tick it off
  • Return visitors to Tanzania who want to go deeper (Ndutu calving, western corridor, southern circuit)
  • Photographers who need flexibility to revisit a location when lighting conditions change
  • First-time visitors who have saved for a significant trip and want to do it properly

10-Day Pricing (mid-range tented camps, 4 parks)

SeasonPrice per person
Green (Mar–May)$1,840–$2,720
Shoulder (Jan–Feb, Nov–Dec)$2,288–$3,328
Peak (Jul–Oct)$2,960–$4,320

Adding Zanzibar (3 nights, beach resort): +$624–$1,248 per person.

Safari convoy at sunset on the Ngorongoro Crater rim — a 10-day itinerary allows for unhurried game drives without the pressure of daily packing and transit
Ten days means no daily packing and moving between camps. You settle into a rhythm — early morning game drive, midday rest at camp, afternoon game drive, dinner, repeat. This is the pace at which a safari starts to feel like a way of being rather than a holiday.

Seasonal Pricing Context

Whatever duration you choose, the timing within the year matters as much as the number of days. A 7-day safari in September is categorically different from a 7-day safari in April:

SeasonMonthsWhat to expectPrice vs peak
PeakJul–OctWildebeest migration in northern Serengeti. Highest wildlife density. Most vehicles at sightings.100%
ShoulderNov–Dec, Jan–FebShort rains (Nov–Dec) bring green landscapes, fewer visitors. Calving season (Jan–Feb) in Ndutu brings intense predator activity.80–90% of peak
GreenMar–MayLong rains. Lush landscapes, bird migration, excellent photography. Some remote camps close. Significantly lower prices.65–80% of peak

The season trade-off: A 5-day safari in September (peak migration) is a better wildlife experience than a 7-day safari in April (green season with some closures). Duration matters, but season matters more.

Which Duration Suits You?

Not sure yet? Here is a quick decision guide:

  • First time + limited leave (10–14 days total trip)7 days. The complete northern circuit without rushing.
  • Been on safari before, want depth + flexibility10 days. Room to adapt to wildlife and include buffer days.
  • Tight budget + green season travel5 days fly-in. Green season pricing makes 5 days exceptionally good value.
  • Combining with Zanzibar beach5 or 7 days safari + 4–5 days Zanzibar. The classic combination.
  • September–October migration priority7 or 10 days. You need northern Serengeti access, which requires at least one full travel day to reach from central Serengeti.
  • Calving season (Jan–Feb) priority10 days. Ndutu region requires a full additional day to reach and spend time in properly.

The Season Matters More Than Duration

Whatever duration you choose, the timing within the year matters as much as the number of days. A 7-day safari in September is categorically different from a 7-day safari in April:

  • July–October: Peak season. Wildebeest migration in northern Serengeti. Highest wildlife density. Highest prices. Most vehicles at sightings.
  • November–December: Short rains. Green season. Much cheaper. Lush landscapes. Fewer visitors. Calving begins in Ndutu from late January.
  • January–February: Calving season in Ndutu. Predator activity intense. Second-busiest period after peak. Medium-high pricing.
  • March–May: Long rains. Lowest season. Green landscapes, bird migration, excellent photography. Significantly lower prices. Some remote camps close.

A 5-day safari in September (peak migration) is a better wildlife experience than a 7-day safari in April (green season with some closures). Duration matters, but season matters more.

Elephant herd at close range in Ngorongoro — the close encounters with wildlife are what define a great safari experience, regardless of duration
Close wildlife encounters like this elephant herd in Ngorongoro are what define a great safari — and they happen regardless of how many days you have. The difference a longer safari makes is frequency: more days means more of these moments.
