Money preparation for a Tanzania safari is straightforward once you know the rules. The main currency for tourist transactions is US dollars — not Tanzanian shillings, and not Euros, British pounds, or other currencies in most safari contexts. This guide covers what to bring, how to access cash, and what cards work where.

The Currency Reality

Tanzania's official currency is the Tanzanian shilling (TZS). In practice, the tourist economy — safari operators, lodges, national park fees, Zanzibar beach hotels — operates primarily in US dollars. Your safari package with Safaris Tanzania is priced in USD and settled in USD. National park fees paid by your operator are calculated in USD. Tips for guides and camp staff are expected in USD.

Tanzanian shillings are the practical currency for local transactions: markets, street food, small shops, local transport, and any interaction outside the tourist economy. If you are spending time in Arusha's markets, Zanzibar's Stone Town, or doing anything that requires paying a local person for a local service, shillings are what you need.

How Much Cash to Bring

Bring USD cash from your home country. The following budget framework helps:

  • Tips: $16 to $26 per person per day for your guide. $5 to $10 per person per day for camp staff. See the tipping guide for full breakdown.
  • Souvenirs and crafts: Arusha's cultural market and Zanzibar's craft stalls are cash-only or strongly prefer cash. Budget $104 to $312 depending on your buying habits.
  • Arusha meals and drinks: If you spend a pre- or post-safari night in Arusha and eat out, budget $21 to $52 per day including drinks.
  • Zanzibar extras: Water sports, spice tours, restaurant meals — $31 to $83 per day.
  • Visas: If you have not pre-arranged an e-visa, the airport visa on arrival costs $52 per person, payable in USD cash.

For a 7-day safari for two people, a reasonable cash budget (tips plus incidentals) is $520 to $728 USD total.

What USD Bills to Bring

Bring a mix of denominations: $1, $5, $10, and $21 bills. Bills printed before 2006 are frequently refused — bring the newest bills you can obtain from your bank. Torn or marked bills are also commonly rejected. Tell your bank you need crisp, recent-series USD bills for international travel.

Do not rely on changing large bills (e.g., $104) at small exchange bureaus in Arusha or at camps. The rate is worse and the logistics awkward. Smaller denominations give you flexibility for tipping and local purchases without requiring change.

ATMs in Tanzania

ATMs are available in Arusha town and at Kilimanjaro International Airport. The major networks (Visa, Mastercard) work at most Arusha ATMs, with daily withdrawal limits typically around $312 to $520 USD equivalent in shillings. ATMs at the airport tend to have the worst exchange rates.

Do not plan to use ATMs inside national parks. There are none. The Serengeti, Ngorongoro, and Tarangire have no banking infrastructure whatsoever. All cash you need for the safari duration must be with you when you depart Arusha.

Zanzibar has ATMs in Stone Town and at the airport. Reliability varies — carry enough cash not to depend on a specific ATM working on a specific day.

Card Acceptance

Credit and debit cards (Visa and Mastercard) are accepted at:

  • Most mid-range and upmarket hotels and lodges (not all tented camps)
  • Some restaurants in Arusha and Zanzibar Stone Town
  • Kilimanjaro International Airport shops
  • Safaris Tanzania — card payment via secure link is available for your safari balance

Cards are generally not accepted at:

  • National park gate entry (your operator pays this in advance)
  • Markets, craft stalls, street vendors
  • Most remote tented camps and mobile camps
  • Local restaurants and small shops in Arusha

Amex is rarely accepted in Tanzania. Do not rely on it.

Mobile Money (M-Pesa)

M-Pesa is Tanzania's mobile money system and is widely used for local transactions. As a tourist, you are unlikely to set it up for a short visit. It is useful to know it exists if a local vendor or guide mentions it — but for practical tourist transactions, USD cash and card remain the standard.

Currency Exchange

If you need Tanzanian shillings, the best exchange rates are at licensed exchange bureaus (forex bureaus) in Arusha town centre. The airport rate is consistently worse. Hotels offer the worst rates. Bring USD and exchange what you need for local spending; keep the remainder in USD for tips and tourist transactions.

Do not exchange currency on the street. Unlicensed exchange offers are either illegal or scams. Use a physical forex bureau with a sign and a receipt.
