A Tanzania safari is already a once-in-a-lifetime experience — but certain add-ons transform it from great to unforgettable. This guide covers the four most requested add-ons: hot air balloon, walking safari, fly camping, and Maasai cultural visit. These are arranged directly by your guide — not packaged through a third-party broker. Here is what each costs and what to expect before you decide.

Hot Air Balloon Over the Serengeti — $599 per Person

Lifting off before dawn, you drift silent above the Serengeti at tree-top height — no engine noise, just the sounds of waking wildlife below. An hour later you land in the bush and a full breakfast is set up around you: eggs, bacon, fruit, and champagne poured at your seat. This is the add-on that defines a premium Tanzania safari.

In the Serengeti, you are flying over whatever wildlife is below — lions, elephants, giraffes, the migration columns during season. Balloon flights operate year-round, with the most dramatic sightings during the Great Migration from June to October. For calving season (January– February), the balloon gives an aerial view of thousands of wildebeest on the Ndutu plains. Photography tip: request the balloon company that uses the older, smaller envelope — it flies lower and gives better photo angles than the newer large envelopes.

  • Serengeti balloon safari: $599 per person (2026 pricing)
  • Duration: 1-hour flight + bush breakfast
  • Best time: June–October for migration sightings; January– February for calving season aerial views
  • Who should skip: Not suitable for children under 7, those with mobility issues, or fear of heights
  • Booking: Must be arranged at least 2 weeks in advance — only 6 balloons operate in the Serengeti and they fill quickly during peak season

The cost is per person, independent of your main safari group size — the balloon holds 8 to 16 passengers. You will be collected from camp before the normal morning game drive and returned to rejoin your safari vehicle after breakfast. Because we arrange this directly with the balloon operator, there is no broker markup. Read our full balloon safari guide.

Tarangire and the Serengeti private conservancies offer Tanzania's best walking safari terrain

Walking Safari — $200 per Person

A walking safari strips away everything artificial. No vehicle, no engine, no roof — just you, your armed professional guide, and the African bush at ground level. You will see tracks, identify birds, read the signs of recent wildlife activity. An elephant will know you are there long before you see it, and your guide will navigate accordingly.

Where you walk matters. The best walking safaris are in the private conservancies bordering the Serengeti — Grumeti, Lamai, and Mara North — where there are no park restrictions on walking distance from a vehicle. Tarangire is excellent around the baobab groves. Near the Ngorongoro Crater, rim walks offer spectacular views without entering the crater floor. What makes walking different from game drives is the sounds and smells you miss from a vehicle — and the plants, birds, and insects you cannot identify from a truck window.

  • Half-day walk (2–3 hours): $200 per person
  • Where: Private conservancies bordering the Serengeti, Tarangire, Ngorongoro rim
  • What makes it different: The sounds, smells, and intimacy with the landscape that no vehicle can replicate
  • Safety: Always with an armed professional guide; walking in big cat territory is explained thoroughly before you set off
  • Minimum age: Generally 12+, varies by operator

Fly Camping — $300 per Person per Night

Fly camping — sleeping under a mosquito net platform in the bush with no permanent structures — is the most authentic safari experience available in Tanzania. Your mobile camp moves with the migration; fly camps are set up in exclusive areas where no other safari operation goes. You fall asleep to hyena whooping in the distance and wake up to elephants walking past your platform.

How it works: your camp staff carry everything in by vehicle and set up stretcher beds, mosquito nets, and a bucket shower before you arrive. There is no generator, no permanent tent — just canvas sheets, the night sky, and the African bush. It is the most raw wilderness sleep experience you can have. Fly camping is available through select operators only; we have relationships with the premium mobile camp operators in the Serengeti and Tarangire.

  • Fly camping per person per night: $300 (includes dinner, breakfast, camp setup)
  • Best for: Experienced travellers who want raw wilderness, not comfort
  • Season: June–October in the Serengeti; year-round in Tarangire subject to park regulations
  • Minimum age: 16 years old
  • Availability: Must be arranged 3+ weeks in advance through your operator

Maasai Cultural Visit — $50 per Person

A visit to a Maasai village — a boma — is one of the most memorable cultural experiences in East Africa. You meet the elders, learn about traditions passed down for generations, and have the opportunity to purchase authentic crafts directly, with no middleman markup going to a tourist shop. In the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, the Maasai have lived and grazed cattle alongside wildlife for centuries, and several cooperatives offer genuine community-run experiences.

How to visit ethically: some village visits are tourist traps where most of the entry fee leaves the community. We work with Maasai communities that benefit directly from your visit — the fees fund schools, clinics, and anti-poaching units. Ask us before you book; we will tell you which visits we trust. The cultural context matters: the Maasai are not a performance act but a living people with a complex relationship to the conservation landscape surrounding the Ngorongoro Crater.

  • Half-day Maasai boma visit: $50 per person (community-run, not exploitative)
  • How to visit ethically: We connect you with community cooperatives that benefit directly — not tourist-oriented performances
  • Combine with: Ngorongoro itineraries (Maasai communities live near the crater highlands)
  • What to expect: Elder introductions, traditional dances, craft purchases at fair-trade prices

Add These to Any Itinerary

All four add-ons are arranged directly by Safaris Tanzania — we own the relationships with the balloon operators, mobile camp crews, and Maasai cooperatives. No broker markup on any of these.

Frequently Asked Questions — Tanzania Safari Add-Ons

Which add-on should I choose first?

For first-time visitors, the hot air balloon safari is the most universally spectacular add-on. It is available to almost everyone (age 7+), works in any season, and the bush breakfast alone is a memorable meal in one of the most extraordinary settings on earth. If you are returning for a second safari, go for the walking safari or fly camping — these are the experiences that change your relationship with the bush.

How far in advance do I need to book?

Balloon safaris: at least 2 weeks, preferably 4+ — only 6 balloons operate in the Serengeti and they book out during peak season (July–October). Fly camping: 3+ weeks minimum — park permits and logistics require planning. Walking safaris: 1–2 weeks in private conservancies. Maasai cultural visits: 3–5 days notice is usually sufficient.

Can children participate in add-on experiences?

Balloon safaris require children to be at least 7 years old. Walking safaris generally require age 12+ — young children are not permitted for safety reasons. Fly camping is restricted to age 16+ due to the remote nature of the experience. Maasai cultural visits have no minimum age. Your operator will advise on what is appropriate for your child's age and temperament.

Are add-ons included in the safari price?

No — add-ons are paid separately from your main safari cost. The balloon, walking, fly camping, and cultural visits are paid at the camp or to the activity operator directly, or included in your comprehensive quote from us. Because we arrange add-ons directly with the operators (no broker markup), you pay direct-operator rates. Balloon is the largest single add-on cost at $599 per person; the others range from $50–$300 per person.

Can I combine add-ons with a Kilimanjaro climb?

Yes — a safari add-on before or after a Kilimanjaro climb is one of our most popular combinations. The safari takes pressure off the legs after the descent, and the wildlife experience is a natural reward for the climbing achievement. Our sister site for Kilimanjaro climbs covers all the climb logistics. Talk to us about combining both.
