Irish travellers have discovered Tanzania as one of the most rewarding long-haul safari destinations accessible from Ireland. The combination of English-speaking guides, straightforward logistics, and extraordinary wildlife experiences makes it an increasingly popular choice for Irish families, couples, and adventure travellers.

This guide covers what Irish travellers need to know about planning a Tanzania safari in 2026: flight routes from Dublin and Belfast, costs in euros, the EHIC card limitations (important — read this before you travel), and the best months to visit from an Irish perspective.

Flight Routes from Ireland to Tanzania

There are no direct flights from Ireland to Tanzania. All routes require a connection:

From Dublin — Ethiopian Airlines via Addis Ababa is typically the most economical and has the best frequency. Kenya Airways via Nairobi is another popular option. Turkish Airlines via Istanbul is a comfortable alternative. Total journey to JRO: approximately 11-16 hours depending on connection.

From Belfast — Belfast International Airport connections typically route through Dublin, London, or other European hubs before the long-haul leg to Tanzania. Add approximately 1-2 hours to Dublin journey times.

From Cork and Shannon — Regional Irish airports typically require a connection to Dublin or London before the long-haul flight to Tanzania.

Book flights to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) — not Dar es Salaam (DAR). JRO is significantly closer to Arusha and the safari circuit.

The EHIC Card — Critical Information for Irish Travellers

This is important enough to state clearly: your Irish EHIC card and the new Life Events card have no validity in Tanzania. These cards only work within the EU and EEA. Tanzania has no reciprocal healthcare agreement with Ireland.

All Irish travellers to Tanzania must purchase comprehensive travel insurance that:

  • Explicitly covers Tanzania (not just 'Africa' generally — check the schedule)
  • Covers safari activities and high-risk adventure activities
  • Includes medical evacuation by helicopter from remote areas (this alone can cost €30,000-€70,000)
  • Provides for emergency medical treatment in Tanzania or air ambulance to South Africa or Europe

This is not optional. The cost of evacuation from Tanzania's remote safari areas without insurance can be financially devastating. Budget €150-€300 for comprehensive cover for a 2-3 week trip.

Visa Requirements for Irish Citizens

Irish passport holders need a Tanzania visa. The tourist visa is available on arrival at JRO for $52 USD (cash), or in advance via evisa.immigration.go.tz. Your passport must be valid for 6 months beyond your entry date with at least two blank pages. No yellow fever certificate is required when arriving directly from Ireland.

Best Time to Safari — From an Irish Perspective

June-October — Peak safari season and dry weather. Aligns well with Irish summer holidays. The Great Migration crossings are most dramatic July-September. Book 6-9 months ahead for the best camps.

December-March — Wildebeest calving season (January-February) is extraordinary. Christmas in the Serengeti is magical but books out 8-12 months ahead. February half-term is an underrated window for Irish families.

April-May — Green season. Dramatically lower prices, fewer tourists, lush landscapes. Some roads become challenging after the long rains. Excellent for veterans and photographers.

Cost Overview for Irish Travellers

  • Return flights from Dublin — €450-€950 per person depending on routing and booking advance
  • Tanzania tourist visa — €45 (USD 50 on arrival)
  • Travel insurance — €150-€300 for comprehensive cover with helicopter evacuation
  • 7-day private safari (direct booking) — €1,800-€3,200 per person depending on season
  • Tips for guides and porters — €60-€120 per person

Booking direct with Safaris Tanzania saves 30-45% compared to Irish tour operator packages for equivalent quality.
