Madrid to Kilimanjaro is a nine-hour flight with one connection. Spain is closer to Tanzania than most Spanish travellers realise — and booking direct with a Tanzanian operator means you skip the European agency markup entirely. This guide covers flights from Spain, costs in euros, the best months given the Spanish holiday calendar, and what to expect on the ground.
We have organised safaris for Spanish travellers since 1978. Our team answers WhatsApp in both Spanish and English, and we can arrange a Spanish-speaking guide on request. Here is everything you need to plan your Tanzania safari from Spain.
Flights from Spain to Tanzania
There are no direct flights from Spain to Kilimanjaro. All routes require at least one connection. The nearest airport to the safari circuit is Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), not Dar es Salaam (DAR) — booking to DAR means an extra 45-minute domestic flight away from Arusha and the northern safari parks.
From Madrid (MAD) — The main Spanish gateway for long-haul flights to East Africa. Ethiopian Airlines via Addis Ababa (ADD) is typically the most economical option, with a short, efficient connection in Addis. Kenya Airways via Nairobi (NBO) is also popular. KLM via Amsterdam (AMS) works well for travellers from northern Spain who prefer a European connection. Turkish Airlines via Istanbul (IST) and Qatar Airways via Doha (DOH) are reliable alternatives with good in-flight service.
From Barcelona (BCN) — No direct long-haul flights from Barcelona to Tanzania. The standard route is a short hop from BCN to Madrid (MAD), then the long-haul onward. Allow 2-3 hours for the Barcelona-Madrid connection when planning your itinerary. Alternatively, KLM from Barcelona via Amsterdam is a viable same-airline option.
Typical prices: Return flights from Spain to JRO range from €550 in low season (March-May, November) to €900 in peak season (June-October, December-January). Booking 3-6 months in advance typically yields the best fares. Fly to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) for the Northern Circuit.
Tanzania Safari Cost for Spanish Travellers
Safari prices are quoted in US dollars, but payment can be arranged in euros at the prevailing exchange rate. Here is what a Tanzania safari costs when booked direct with Safaris Tanzania, compared to what a Spanish travel agency would charge for an equivalent package:
- 5-Day Northern Circuit — From €1,050 per person direct with Safaris Tanzania. Spanish agencies: €1,800-€2,500.
- 7-Day Serengeti & Ngorongoro — From €1,400 per person direct. Spanish agencies: €2,500-€4,000.
- 10-Day Ultimate Tanzania — From €2,100 per person direct. Spanish agencies: €4,000-€6,500.
The saving of 30-45% reflects the absence of European retail margins. A Spanish agency selling Tanzania safaris typically adds 40-60% to the operator's actual cost. When you book direct, that margin stays in your pocket — or upgrades your lodge category for the same price.
What is included in Safaris Tanzania pricing: All park fees, accommodation, meals, transport in 4x4 vehicles, a personal guide, drinking water on game drives, and airport transfers.
Not included: Flights, tourist visa ($50 USD), travel insurance, tips (typically €60-€100 per person for the guide and camp staff), personal expenses, and alcoholic drinks.
Best Time to Visit — Spanish Holiday Calendar
Spanish school holidays and the Spanish concept of puente (long weekend) shape the travel window. Tanzania's safari calendar adds another layer. Here is how they align:
November to December — Excellent. The short rains bring green landscapes, fewer crowds, and lower prices. Wildebeest are on the short-grass plains south of Serengeti. This window works around the expensive Christmas peak while offering superb wildlife. Book early for Christmas — spaces fill 4-6 months ahead.
January and February — Underrated and good value. Wildebeest calving season on the Ndutu plains is extraordinary. Dry weather, passable roads, excellent wildlife. February half-term works for families with children in Spanish schools. These are the cheapest months to safari after the green season.
Semana Santa (March/April) — Magical timing for wildlife. The green season means lower prices and extraordinary birdwatching and predator sightings. Some secondary roads in Tarangire can be muddy; we adjust itineraries accordingly. This is our most affordable safari window.
June to October — Peak Season — The Great Migration river crossings (July-September) are one of the world's great wildlife spectacles. This coincides with Spanish summer holidays — the most popular but also the most expensive time. Book 6-8 months ahead for the best camps.
Recommended by traveller type:
- Families with children — November (post-half-term, good weather) or January-February (calving season, school holiday compatible, lower prices)
- Couples — Any time, but June-October for peak wildlife, or November for green-season value and photography light
- Solo travellers — April-May (lowest prices, excellent wildlife, quiet parks) or November (short rains, affordable, green landscapes)
What Spanish Travellers Ask Us
Do I need a visa? Yes — Spanish passport holders need a Tanzania tourist visa. The e-Visa at evisa.immigration.go.tz takes about 20 minutes to complete and costs $50 USD. The visa on arrival at JRO is also available for $50 USD. Your passport needs 6 months' validity and two blank pages.
Is Tanzania safe? Tanzania is one of Africa's safest safari destinations. Violent crime against tourists is rare. We provide all vehicles with satellite phones and brief guests on practical safety before departure.
What language will my guide speak? English is standard. We can arrange a Spanish-speaking guide on request — confirm this at booking so we can assign the right person. Most of our guides have years of experience hosting Spanish guests and communicate well in basic Spanish.
How do I get a SIM card? Airtel and Tigocel data SIMs are available at Kilimanjaro Airport on arrival. We advise on the best local data packages before your trip. WiFi is available in most lodges and camps — not in the national parks themselves, by design.
Can I drink the water? Yes in lodges and camps. We provide sealed drinking water on all game drives. Bottled water is available for purchase in most locations.
