A game drive is a guided vehicle excursion through a national park or conservation area in search of wildlife. On a Tanzania safari, game drives are the primary activity — typically four to six hours per drive, in an open-roofed 4x4 vehicle with a guide who knows the terrain, animal behaviour, and seasonal patterns. This guide explains how they work and what to expect.
Morning Game Drives
The morning drive starts at dawn, typically 06:00-06:30 depending on the season, and runs for four to five hours. This is the most productive window for wildlife viewing for several reasons:
- Predator activity. Lions, leopards, and cheetahs are most active in the hours around dawn. Night hunts often conclude at first light. A morning drive regularly catches cats still feeding or resting near a recent kill.
- Cool temperatures. Animals are mobile before the day heats up. Elephant herds, buffalo, and plains game move toward water and grazing grounds.
- Light quality. Photographers prize the soft golden light of early morning. The hour after sunrise is considered the best light of the day in the Serengeti.
- Bird activity. Raptors, rollers, bee-eaters, and most vocal species are most active at dawn. Birdwatchers should prioritise morning drives.
Morning drives typically return to camp or lodge by 10:30-11:00 for breakfast. Some itineraries run a packed breakfast taken in the field, allowing a longer morning drive that extends to midday.
Evening Game Drives
The evening drive departs around 15:30-16:00 and runs until 18:30, shortly before park closing time. Evening drives offer:
- Second predator window. Big cats stir again as temperatures drop in late afternoon. Lions and leopards begin moving toward hunting positions.
- Herd movement toward water. Large herds of elephants, zebras, and wildebeest often converge on waterholes in late afternoon — concentrated, predictable viewing.
- Golden hour light. Sunset light over Serengeti plains is one of the most photographed landscapes in Africa. The drive back coincides with the sun dropping to the horizon.
Most lodges and camps in Tanzania serve sundowner drinks in the field during the evening drive — a natural pause at a scenic viewpoint before the return to camp.
Midday: Why Drives Pause
The hours between roughly 10:30 and 15:30 are the least productive for game viewing. Temperatures reach 30-38°C in the dry season. Most animals rest in shade — visible if you know where to look, but static and relatively uninteresting compared to active dawn and dusk behaviour. The midday pause is not laziness; it is a genuine reflection of when wildlife is most active.
This is when lodges and camps schedule lunch, pool time, and rest. Some camps offer guided bush walks during this period as a different way to experience the ecosystem.
Full-Day Game Drives
On some itineraries — particularly in the Serengeti during migration events — a full-day drive makes sense. You depart at dawn with a packed lunch, stay in the field through midday, and return at sunset. Full-day drives are best reserved for:
- River crossing events (Mara crossings in the northern Serengeti, July-October)
- Calving season in Ndutu (February), where newborn wildebeest and concentrated predators reward staying in the field
- Following a specific sighting — a leopard with a kill, a cheetah coalition — that rewards waiting
Full-day drives are tiring. Carrying water, snacks, and sun protection is essential. Not every guest enjoys them — they suit wildlife-focused travellers more than those wanting a relaxed pace.
What a Typical Safari Day Looks Like
A standard day on a Safaris Tanzania northern circuit safari:
- 05:30 — Wake-up call with tea or coffee at camp
- 06:00 — Depart for morning game drive
- 10:30 — Return to camp, full breakfast
- 11:00-15:00 — Rest, pool, optional guided walk
- 15:30 — Depart for afternoon/evening game drive
- 18:30 — Return to camp as parks close
- 19:30 — Dinner
Two drives per day is standard. Three drives (with a short midday break in the field) are possible in some parks and some seasons.
Vehicle Setup
Safaris Tanzania uses Toyota Land Cruiser 4x4s with pop-up roof hatches for standing game viewing. Each vehicle carries a maximum of six guests — fewer in the dry season where sightings are competitive and vehicle positioning matters. The guide sits in front with the driver and communicates via radio with other guides in the ecosystem to locate active sightings.
Getting the Most From Your Drives
- Ask questions. Your guide's job is not just to spot animals but to interpret what you are seeing. Ask about behaviour, ecology, and context.
- Be patient at sightings. An animal that appears static will often do something interesting if you wait five minutes. Guides who know their animals know when to stay and when to move on.
- Limit phone activity during drives. The immersive quality of a game drive diminishes significantly with a screen in front of your face. Cameras are fine. Scrolling is not.
- Dress in layers for morning drives. The temperature before sunrise in the Ngorongoro area can be 8-12°C. By 09:00 it is 25°C. Layers you can remove are essential.
