Tanzania is one of the world's most sought-after honeymoon destinations for a reason. The combination of a private safari in the Serengeti and a few days on Zanzibar's Indian Ocean beaches is hard to match anywhere. This guide explains how to plan it well.
Why Tanzania Works for Honeymoons
Most honeymoon safari destinations offer one primary experience — wildlife or beaches. Tanzania offers both within a single trip. Arusha to Zanzibar by air takes 55 minutes. You can spend five days watching lions in the Serengeti and four days on a private beach in Zanzibar without either leg feeling rushed.
The wildlife experience is also genuinely private. A private safari vehicle — exclusively for the two of you — means you set your own pace, stay at sightings as long as you like, and have your guide's full attention. There is no group dynamic, no compromising on where to go or when to return to camp. The private vehicle format is standard on honeymoon itineraries and is worth the premium.
The Classic Structure: Safari + Zanzibar
The most popular honeymoon format is 10-12 days combining the northern circuit with Zanzibar:
- Days 1-2: Tarangire National Park — elephant herds, baobab landscapes, relaxed pace for arrival
- Day 3: Ngorongoro Crater — full day in the caldera, Big Five in a single drive
- Days 4-6: Serengeti — three full days, morning and evening game drives, sundowners on the plains
- Days 7-10: Zanzibar — beach, Stone Town, snorkelling or diving
The Zanzibar leg works best in the northern or eastern part of the island. Nungwi and Kendwa (north coast) have calmer water year-round. Matemwe and Pongwe (east coast) are quieter and more private but have seasonal wave patterns.
Choosing a Romantic Camp
Camp selection on a honeymoon matters more than on a standard safari. What to look for:
- Private or semi-private location. Small camps (6-12 tents) in concession areas outside the main park have fewer vehicles and more exclusive game viewing.
- Bush dinners and sundowners. Most premium camps can arrange a private dinner in the bush, a sundowner at a scenic point, or a morning coffee on the plains. These are worth requesting specifically.
- Tent size and quality. Honeymoon-category tents at the better properties have king-size beds, claw-foot baths or outdoor showers, and private decks with bush views. The difference between a standard tent and a honeymoon tent at the same camp is significant.
- Staff discretion. Small camps with attentive but unobtrusive service are better than large lodges where you are one of many guests.
Safaris Tanzania has worked with honeymoon couples in the Serengeti for decades. We know which camps deliver on romantic atmosphere and which overclaim. We can match properties to your budget and preferences.
Best Months for a Tanzania Honeymoon
Tanzania has two optimal windows for a safari honeymoon:
- June to October (dry season): Best overall wildlife, clear skies, warm days. Peak season means higher camp rates and more visitors, but the wildlife experience is exceptional. July and August are the busiest months.
- January to March (green season): Lower rates, fewer tourists, and calving season in the southern Serengeti from January through March. The Ndutu plains during calving are extraordinary — not a consolation prize for travelling off-peak.
Zanzibar works in all seasons. Avoid the long rains (April-May) on the island if possible — it is the wettest period and the sea can be choppy. November to March and June to October are both excellent for Zanzibar beaches.
Special Touches Worth Arranging
Things Safaris Tanzania can arrange on request for honeymoon itineraries:
- Hot air balloon flight over the Serengeti at sunrise (booked well in advance, expensive but exceptional)
- Private bush dinner under the stars with a dedicated waiter and cook
- Champagne sundowner at a scenic point, away from other vehicles and camps
- Maasai beadwork ceremony or craft workshop for a cultural element
- Private dhow trip off the Zanzibar coast, with snorkelling and a beach picnic
None of these require a premium outfitter. They require an operator who knows the right contacts and plans ahead. Tell Kassim what matters to you and he will build it in.
Budget Expectations
A Tanzania honeymoon safari at premium camps — private vehicle, 5-6 nights in the northern circuit, 4 nights in Zanzibar — typically ranges from $6,240 to $12,480 per couple, all-inclusive excluding international flights. The range reflects camp quality, season, and the extent of special arrangements.
This is not a budget destination. Tanzania's park fees, flight costs, and camp rates are fixed by the market. Operators who quote significantly below this range are cutting corners on vehicle quality, guide experience, or camp standards.
