Tanzania Safari in October — Migration Transition and What to Expect

October Tanzania safari: migration moves south, short rains begin, excellent game viewing across all northern parks with fewer crowds than peak season.

October is a transition month in Tanzania. The long dry season ends, the short rains may begin in late October or November, and the Great Migration herds start their southward journey from the northern Serengeti. It combines the tail end of peak game viewing with fewer visitors and, often, the first green flush of vegetation. It is one of the most underrated months on the Tanzania safari calendar.

The Great Migration in October

The migration herds spend July to October in northern Serengeti and the Masai Mara ecosystem straddling the Kenya border. October is the turning point — the herds sense the coming short rains and begin moving south toward the central Serengeti and eventually the Ndutu calving grounds.

What this means for a safari:

  • Early October — Herds are still largely in northern Serengeti. Mara River crossings continue, though with less intensity than September. Positioning at Kogatende/Lamai still gives good crossing access.
  • Mid-October — Movement begins. Some herds disperse into central Serengeti. The migration becomes more diffuse and harder to pinpoint.
  • Late October — Herds are often moving through central Serengeti. Large concentrations remain but the dramatic river crossing season is effectively over.

October is not the best month to target river crossings specifically, but it is an excellent month for witnessing the sheer scale of the moving herds spread across the Serengeti plains.

Game Viewing in October

The northern circuit remains in excellent condition through October:

  • Serengeti. Resident wildlife is unaffected by migration timing. The Seronera corridor has year-round lion prides, leopards, and cheetahs. October often has good predator activity as the landscape starts greening.
  • Ngorongoro Crater. October is strong. Lions on the crater floor are active and the black rhino population is most reliably spotted during the dry-to-wet transition when animals are most mobile.
  • Tarangire. October remains one of Tarangire's best months — elephant herds are still large along the river, and the park begins to green up, providing beautiful contrast between baobab silhouettes and new grass.
  • Lake Manyara. The alkaline lake begins to refill in October, attracting returning flamingos. Tree-climbing lion activity continues.

Weather in October

October is the transition between dry season and the short rains. The first half is typically dry and warm (28-32°C), nearly identical to September. Short rains — usually brief afternoon thunderstorms — can begin any time from mid-October onwards, sometimes not arriving until November.

When the rains arrive, they are typically sharp afternoon showers rather than all-day rain. Morning game drives are rarely affected. The landscape transforms quickly — within days of the first rains, the plains green up noticeably.

Travel tip: pack a light rain layer for afternoon drives, but do not expect the rains to disrupt a safari significantly. Most days in October remain dry.

Advantages of October

  • Fewer vehicles. August is the single busiest month on the northern circuit. By October, visitor numbers have fallen noticeably. River crossing sites that had 25 vehicles in August might have 8 in October.
  • Lower rates. Some lodges reduce rates in late October as the peak season ends. This varies by property — worth asking.
  • Green season preview. The first rains bring a freshness to the landscape. New grass, birds returning, and the knowledge that you are seeing the ecosystem in transition.
  • Newborn animals. Some species — particularly impala and Thomson's gazelle — time births to coincide with the short rains. Late October can produce good sightings of newborns.

Photography in October

October presents distinctive photography opportunities that differ from peak season. The landscape is in transition — the dry season's gold and brown giving way to the first greens. This creates more colour variation in frame than the monochrome browns of peak dry season. The sky often develops dramatic afternoon cumulus clouds that produce striking sunset and storm-light photography over the plains.

The return of migratory birds in October adds avian subjects to wildlife photography. Steppe eagles are common across the Serengeti plains, often seen on termite mounds or in flight. Lesser kestrels gather in large flocks in the northern Serengeti before continuing south. The contrast of these dark raptors against the green-gold landscape makes for compelling images.

Cheetah photography in October benefits from shorter grass in the southern and central Serengeti. The Ndutu region's short grass plains are ideal cheetah habitat — the cats use slight rises in the terrain to scan for prey, and the shorter vegetation makes these vigils visible from a distance. October often produces excellent cheetah sighting frequency before the long grass of the wet season grows in.

Planning an October Itinerary

An October safari benefits from strategic camp positioning to match the migration movement. Early October herds are generally still in the northern Serengeti around Kogatende and Lamai — camps in this area give good access to the tail end of crossing season. By mid to late October, the herds have moved south through the central Serengeti toward the Musabi and Ndutu areas — positioning here catches the broad migration movement across the plains.

A typical October northern circuit itinerary:

  • 2 days Tarangire (excellent October wildlife, less crowded than peak)
  • 3-4 days Serengeti (positioned according to where the migration herds are in your specific travel period)
  • 1 day Ngorongoro Crater

This is a strong combination for October because it covers the full ecosystem, includes resident wildlife in Tarangire and Ngorongoro that is not dependent on migration timing, and gives enough time in the Serengeti to adapt your positioning as the migration moves.

What to Pack Specifically for October

October is still warm and can be dusty. The same packing principles as August apply with minor adjustments:

  • Light layers for early morning drives — it can be cool at 6am before the sun is fully up, warm by mid-morning
  • A light rain layer — short rains can begin in late October and occasional afternoon showers occur
  • The same neutral safari clothing colours recommended for any Tanzania safari
  • Dust protection — a light buff or scarf for the nose and mouth on dusty roads
  • Extra camera batteries — the new green season landscape is more demanding on equipment

October vs August: Which Is Better?

August has more intense river crossing action and higher peak wildlife density. October has fewer crowds, greener landscapes, and more relaxed game viewing. For first-time visitors who want the migration spectacle at maximum intensity, August is stronger. For repeat visitors or those who find crowds frustrating, October is often the preferred month.

Both are excellent choices. The difference is emphasis, not quality.
