Your travel insurance might not cover what you think it does. Many travellers arrive in Tanzania believing their standard policy will cover a medical evacuation from the Serengeti — and find out it does not until they need it. This is what you actually need, and why.
Medical Evacuation — The Non-Negotiable
The Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater are remote. A serious medical incident requires evacuation to Nairobi — 120 km from the Tanzania border — or back to your home country. The cost: $15,000 to $52,000 depending on distance, urgency, and the level of care required. Helicopter evacuation from inside the Ngorongoro Conservation Area alone can run $8,000 to $15,000 before you even factor in the air ambulance to Nairobi or beyond.
What standard travel insurance often excludes: evacuation from remote areas, helicopter evacuation, and medical repatriation. Read the fine print. Many policies cap evacuation coverage at amounts far below what an African medevac actually costs, or exclude Africa entirely as a designated region.
What to look for: Medical evacuation coverage of at minimum $100,000. Look for policies that explicitly mention “emergency evacuation” and “remote area evacuation.” Verify that Africa is not excluded. Read the exclusions section before you buy.
Why Safaris Tanzania requires it: not as a formality. We have coordinated evacuations for clients and we know exactly what the bills look like without coverage. We have seen families face bills that dwarfed the cost of the safari itself because a policy looked adequate on paper but excluded remote-area evacuation when it mattered.
Trip Cancellation and Interruption — Strongly Recommended
What it covers: if you cancel before departure for a covered reason — illness, bereavement, airline failure, jury duty — you recover your safari deposit. For most Safaris Tanzania itineraries, that deposit is $200 to $500 per person. Trip cancellation insurance means that money is not simply lost.
What it typically costs: $83 to $150 for a 7-day safari depending on coverage level and your home country. This is a small fraction of what you are protecting.
What to watch: Pre-existing medical conditions are often excluded unless you purchase the policy within 14 to 21 days of your initial safari deposit. The clock starts on the day you pay the deposit, not the day you finalise your flights. Timing matters — do not leave this to the last week before departure.
Safaris Tanzania's cancellation terms are published on your booking form — no hidden clauses, no surprises. Knowing exactly what you are protecting against helps you evaluate how much coverage you genuinely need.
Personal Liability — Often Overlooked
What it covers: if you accidentally injure someone or damage property during your safari — a rare but conceivable scenario in remote areas — personal liability coverage protects you from the financial consequences. This includes legal fees and compensation claims.
Why it matters in Tanzania specifically: national park boundaries, community grazing areas adjacent to parks, and certain wildlife interactions carry specific liability considerations. Your standard domestic liability policy often does not extend to activities outside your home country.
What to look for: Third-party liability minimum of $50,000. Some safari operators carry group liability for their vehicles — check with us directly if you are unsure. Personal liability is the coverage people skip until they need it, then wish they had not.
Gear and Equipment Coverage — For Photographers
What it covers: lost, stolen, or damaged camera equipment during the safari. This matters if you are travelling with gear worth more than your safari.
Why travellers underestimate it: safari vehicles vibrate constantly on rough roads. Camera bags are stored in dusty environments. A cracked lens or water-damaged body in the Serengeti is not something you can replace locally. Repair options in East Africa are limited and expensive.
What to look for: Accidental damage and theft coverage. Verify that wildlife photography scenarios — which can include water spray, dust, and rough handling — are not explicitly excluded from the policy.
One practical note: credit cards often provide basic purchase protection for new gear. Check your card's policy first before buying additional coverage you may already have.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need insurance to book a safari with Safaris Tanzania?▼
Not to book — but we strongly recommend having medical evacuation coverage in place before you arrive. We can share policy recommendations if you are unsure where to start. Message us on WhatsApp with your itinerary and we will tell you exactly what our clients carry and why.
Does my European or EU health card cover Tanzania?▼
No. EHIC (European Health Insurance Card) and similar national health schemes do not cover treatment outside Europe. Tanzania is not part of the European healthcare system. You need separate travel insurance with medical evacuation coverage for Tanzania specifically.
Can I buy insurance after I have already paid my safari deposit?▼
Yes — but buy within 14 to 21 days of your initial deposit to ensure pre-existing medical conditions are covered. The sooner the better. After that window closes, pre-existing conditions are typically excluded from coverage.
Still unsure what to get?
Message us with your itinerary — we will tell you exactly what our clients carry and why. We have coordinated medical evacuations and we know the difference between a policy that looks adequate on paper and one that actually performs when you need it.
