Travel insurance for a Tanzania safari is not optional — it is the one preparation where the consequences of getting it wrong are serious. This guide explains what you actually need, what standard policies miss, and what to check before you pay for anything.
The Non-Negotiable: Medical Evacuation Cover
This is the item most travellers overlook and the one that matters most on a Tanzania safari.
The national parks are remote. If you suffer a serious medical event on the Serengeti plains — a cardiac event, a serious injury, severe allergic reaction — the nearest hospital with adequate facilities is Arusha, a minimum of 3–5 hours by road from most park locations. In a genuine emergency, road transport is not the right answer. The correct answer is a medical evacuation by light aircraft or helicopter to Arusha or Nairobi.
Flying Doctors (AMREF) operates this evacuation network across East Africa. A membership costs approximately $26–30 per week and covers evacuation from any location in East Africa to the nearest appropriate facility. Without it, an emergency evacuation by charter aircraft can cost $10,400–25,000 USD out of pocket.
What to do: Purchase a Flying Doctors membership for the duration of your trip, separately from your main travel insurance policy. Do this before you arrive. The membership number is what matters in an emergency — the Flying Doctors network is well-known to all park rangers and lodge staff in Tanzania.
Check also whether your main travel insurance policy includes medical evacuation. Many standard "travel insurance" policies include evacuation cover in theory but cap it at amounts that do not cover actual East Africa evacuation costs, or exclude evacuation from remote locations. Read the exclusion clauses.
Trip Cancellation and Interruption
Tanzania safari deposits and bookings involve significant sums. A 5-day northern circuit safari at $1,456 per person, plus flights, represents a meaningful financial commitment. If you need to cancel — illness, family emergency, work — what happens to your money depends on:
- Your operator's cancellation policy (Safaris Tanzania cancellation terms are set out in your booking confirmation)
- Your airline's cancellation terms
- Whether your travel insurance covers the covered reasons for your cancellation
Standard trip cancellation cover reimburses prepaid, non-refundable costs if you cancel for a covered reason (illness, death of a close family member, etc.). The key word is "covered" — cancellation due to change of mind, fear of travel, or work obligation is almost never covered. Read what your policy defines as a covered reason before purchasing.
"Cancel for any reason" (CFAR) policies exist and cover a broader set of cancellation scenarios, typically reimbursing 50–75% of prepaid costs. They are more expensive. For high-value bookings with limited refundability, CFAR may be worth the additional premium.
Medical Cover in Tanzania
Beyond evacuation, standard medical cover for treatment in Tanzania is relevant if you require care at a local facility. Arusha has private hospitals that treat international visitors competently for most common conditions — illness, injury, infections. Treatment costs are lower than in Europe or North America but still significant without cover.
Check that your policy:
- Covers Tanzania specifically (most do, but confirm)
- Covers emergency dental treatment (often excluded or separately capped)
- Has a direct billing arrangement with hospitals, or is clear on the reimbursement process
- Does not exclude pre-existing conditions that are relevant to your health history
Adventure Activity Cover
If your Tanzania trip includes a Kilimanjaro climb, walking safari, or any activity beyond standard game drives, check that your policy covers it. Many standard travel insurance policies exclude "adventure sports" or have altitude limits for mountaineering cover. Kilimanjaro summit attempts reach 5,895m — confirm your policy does not exclude high-altitude trekking.
Standard game drives from a vehicle are not typically classified as adventure activities and are covered under most policies. Ask your insurer if you are uncertain about any specific activity.
Camera and Equipment Cover
Safari is a photography-intensive environment. Dust, vibration, and the general exposure of open-vehicle game drives are hard on camera equipment. Standard travel insurance policies often include baggage cover, but the per-item limits are frequently too low to cover serious camera gear — a body and two lenses can exceed £3,000–5,000 in value.
If you are travelling with significant camera equipment, check the per-item limit in your policy. Most policies cap single-item claims at £300–500 without a specific valuables extension. A specialist camera insurance policy (or an extension to your home contents policy that covers items away from home) is the more practical solution for high-value equipment.
What to Buy: A Practical Summary
For most Tanzania safari travellers, the combination that covers the real risks:
- Flying Doctors membership for medical evacuation — purchase directly at flyingdoctors.africa for the duration of your trip. This is the most critical item.
- Standard comprehensive travel insurance from a reputable provider that covers Tanzania, includes medical treatment cover, and has trip cancellation for covered reasons. Confirm the evacuation clause covers East Africa.
- Specialist camera insurance if you are travelling with equipment above the standard baggage claim limit of your policy.
- If your booking value is high and cancellation terms are strict: consider whether "cancel for any reason" upgrade is worth the premium.
Questions Before You Book
Safaris Tanzania can advise on what past clients have used, what the realistic evacuation scenarios are from the parks on your itinerary, and what the cancellation terms are for your specific booking. WhatsApp Kassim at +255 786 110 786 — this is the kind of pre-trip practical question he answers directly, not through a ticketing system.
