Planning a Tanzania safari itinerary means making a series of linked decisions: which parks, how many days, what season, what pace. Each decision constrains and shapes the others. This guide walks through the planning process systematically so you arrive at an itinerary that matches your priorities — not a generic template.
Step 1: Define Your Priorities
Tanzania offers fundamentally different safari experiences depending on what you prioritise. Before selecting parks or dates, clarify what matters most:
- Big cats and predator action. Central Serengeti (Seronera) and Ngorongoro Crater deliver the highest predator density year-round.
- The Great Migration. Location depends entirely on month — Ndutu for calving (January-March), western corridor for river crossings at Grumeti (May-June), northern Serengeti for Mara River crossings (July-October).
- Birdwatching. November to April (wet season) brings migratory species. Lake Manyara and Tarangire are strongest for resident waterbirds and raptors.
- Fewer crowds. Southern circuit (Ruaha, Nyerere/Selous) or northern circuit parks outside peak season (November, March-April).
- Family-friendly pace. Shorter drives between parks, camps with family tents, flexible game-drive timing.
- Photography. Longer stays per park, early morning and late afternoon drives, specific positioning for migration events.
Step 2: Choose Your Parks
Tanzania's parks divide into two main circuits:
Northern Circuit
The most popular route. All parks are within driving distance of Arusha, making multi-park itineraries logistically simple.
- Serengeti National Park — The anchor. Migration, big cats, vast plains. Minimum two nights, ideally three or more.
- Ngorongoro Crater — Dense wildlife in a volcanic caldera. One full day is sufficient; two days allows a more relaxed pace.
- Tarangire National Park — Elephant herds, baobab landscapes, excellent June-October. One to two nights.
- Lake Manyara National Park — Compact park, tree-climbing lions, flamingos. Often a half-day stop en route to Ngorongoro.
Southern Circuit
Less visited, wilder, and more remote. Requires internal flights or long drives from Dar es Salaam.
- Ruaha National Park — Tanzania's largest park. Exceptional predator viewing with very few vehicles. Minimum two nights.
- Nyerere National Park (Selous) — River-based game viewing, boat safaris, walking safaris. Two to three nights.
Step 3: Decide Duration
The minimum for a meaningful Tanzania safari is four days (three nights). Beyond that, each additional day adds depth rather than just ticking off more parks.
- 4-5 days: Ngorongoro + Tarangire, or Ngorongoro + short Serengeti. Good introduction, but limited time per park.
- 6-7 days: The practical sweet spot for the northern circuit. Serengeti (3 nights) + Ngorongoro (1-2 nights) + Tarangire or Lake Manyara. Enough time to see the ecosystem properly.
- 8-10 days: Full northern circuit with generous time in each park, or northern circuit plus Zanzibar beach extension.
- 10-14 days: Northern and southern circuits combined, or deep Serengeti immersion covering multiple ecosystem zones.
Step 4: Match the Season
Tanzania is a year-round destination, but what you see changes dramatically by month. The Great Migration Calendar covers migration timing in detail. For general planning:
- June to October (dry season): Peak game viewing. Animals concentrate around water sources. Best for first-time visitors wanting reliable sightings.
- January to March: Calving season in southern Serengeti. Green season — lush landscapes, fewer tourists, newborn animals everywhere.
- November to December (short rains): Quieter parks, good rates, migration herds returning south. Occasional afternoon rain, rarely disruptive.
- April to May (long rains): Lowest season. Some camps close. Roads can be challenging. Significant discounts available.
Step 5: Plan the Routing
Routing matters more than most visitors realise. A poorly routed itinerary wastes hours on unnecessary driving. Key principles:
- Start or end with Tarangire/Manyara. These parks are closest to Arusha and work as the first or last stop.
- Ngorongoro sits between Arusha and Serengeti. Visit it en route in either direction rather than backtracking.
- Allow a full day for the Serengeti drive. The drive from Ngorongoro rim to central Serengeti takes 4-5 hours with game viewing along the way — it is a safari drive, not dead time.
- Internal flights save time on longer itineraries. A flight from Serengeti to Arusha takes 90 minutes versus a full day of driving. Worth considering for 8+ day trips.

The Value of a Custom Itinerary
Template itineraries are starting points. The actual best itinerary for you depends on your travel dates, group composition, fitness level, budget, and what wildlife events are happening at the time of your visit. A ground operator with 45 years of Serengeti experience can adjust routing, camp selection, and park timing based on real conditions — not last year's brochure.
