July and August are Tanzania's highest-demand safari months because dry-season wildlife is concentrated and the migration is usually in the northern Serengeti. The short answer: choose July if you want slightly earlier movement and marginally better availability; choose August if your priority is the strongest chance of northern Serengeti river-crossing activity, with the understanding that camps and flights book earlier. Tanzania safari bookings fill 6–12 months in advance for the best camps. See our 7-day Great Migration itinerary for a peak-season route that positions you in the northern Serengeti.
2026 peak-season planning note
Plan July and August around availability first, then price
Peak-season park fees are fixed, but camp rates and northern Serengeti availability move quickly. If your dates are fixed, start with availability at Kogatende/Lamai, then build the route back through Ngorongoro and Tarangire. If your budget is fixed, compare late June or October before you cut days from the safari.

Why Peak Season Delivers the Best Game Viewing
The dry season logic is straightforward: water sources shrink, animals concentrate. In July and August, the Serengeti's rivers and waterholes draw wildlife from across the ecosystem. You do not need to drive far to find game because the game comes to predictable locations every morning.
Grass is short and brown by July, which improves visibility dramatically. In the wet season, a lion 40 metres away can be invisible in long grass. In July, the same lion is clearly visible from 200 metres. This affects predator sightings, cheetah viewing on open plains, and the ability to follow hunts in progress.
Temperature in July and August: days are warm (25-28C) and nights are cool (10-15C at altitude). The Ngorongoro Crater rim can be cold at night. Early morning game drives require layers.
The Great Migration in July and August
By July, more than two million wildebeest and 300,000 zebra have swept north through the Serengeti ecosystem, following the seasonal rains. The animals mass on the southern bank of the Mara River, waiting to cross into Kenya's Masai Mara and back — one of the greatest wildlife spectacles on earth. Our 7-day Great Migration safari positions you in the northern Serengeti for these crossings. These Mara River crossings are the most dramatic event in the migration calendar.
What happens at a river crossing:
- Herds of hundreds to thousands of wildebeest build on the riverbank, often hesitating for hours before the first animal commits
- The crossing takes minutes — the herd follows in a cascade, churning the river
- Nile crocodiles ambush from below; lions and leopards wait on the far bank
- Not every crossing results in predator kills — but the tension and scale of every crossing is extraordinary regardless
Crossings are unpredictable by day. You position at a known crossing point and wait. Multiple crossings can happen in a single game drive, or none for two days. This is wildlife, not a scheduled event. Three nights in the northern Serengeti in July or August gives a reasonable probability of witnessing at least one crossing.
Key Parks in July and August
Northern Serengeti (Lamai / Kogatende)
The best position for river crossings. Camps in this area are 5-6 hours by road from the central Serengeti. Most visitors either fly in or include it as part of a longer itinerary that positions you in the north. Demand for camps here in July-August is extreme — book 6-12 months in advance.
Central Serengeti (Seronera)
Year-round resident game at its most concentrated during the dry season. Seronera River attracts elephants, hippos, buffalo, and big cats daily. Even without migration, the central zone delivers exceptional game viewing in July-August. See our Serengeti safari guide for full details.
Ngorongoro Crater
Dry season concentrates game on the crater floor around the permanent Munge and Ngoitokitok swamps. Lion sightings are reliable year-round, but July-August often produces the highest density of activity. The crater is at its most dramatic visually — dust devils rising from the dry lake bed, massive herds around water. See our Ngorongoro Crater safari guide.
Tarangire National Park
July-October is Tarangire's best season. The Tarangire River is the only permanent water source in the area, drawing elephants from across the ecosystem. Herds of 200-300 elephants at the river in a single game drive are realistic in August. The baobab landscape is photogenic year-round but the animal density peaks now.
Practical Considerations for Peak Season
Book Early
July and August accommodations in the Serengeti sell out 6-12 months in advance for quality camps. If you are planning a July 2027 safari, the time to book is now. Waiting until March for a July departure means working with whatever is left — which is typically either overpriced or low quality.
Expect Other Vehicles
The northern Serengeti at peak season has more safari vehicles than any other month. At a major river crossing or a lion kill, you will share the experience with other vehicles. This is manageable — the scale of the events overwhelms the crowd — but if solitude is your priority, consider shoulder season (June or October) instead.
Pricing
Peak season rates apply at most camps from late June through October. Expect to pay 20-40% more than green season rates for the same properties, with the biggest uplift in northern Serengeti camps and fly-in logistics. Safaris Tanzania quotes all-inclusive prices that include current camp rates, park fees, private vehicle, guide, meals, and transfers — no surprises at checkout. For a fast comparison, ask for one July/August quote and one late June or October quote before you decide.
