July is the single most popular month for a Tanzania safari, and for good reason. The dry season is fully established. The Great Migration herds — 1.5 million wildebeest and hundreds of thousands of zebra — are moving through the central and western Serengeti toward the Mara River. Predator activity is at its highest as big cats follow the herds. The vegetation is low, making wildlife easy to spot across the plains.
It is also the most expensive and busiest month. This guide covers what July actually delivers, what it costs, and whether the premium is worth it for your specific trip.

July Weather
Dry season conditions are established across northern Tanzania by July. Rain is extremely unlikely in the Serengeti, Ngorongoro, and Tarangire. Daytime temperatures in the Serengeti sit at 24–28°C — warm but not oppressive. Mornings are cool, particularly in the Ngorongoro highlands where temperatures drop to 6–10°C at dawn. A fleece and windproof jacket are essential for early game drives.
Dust levels increase through July as the plains dry out. Tracks in the Serengeti generate fine dust, especially in the central Seronera area where vehicle traffic is highest. Bring a scarf or buff for open-roof driving and dust protection for camera equipment.
The sky is typically clear, which means excellent photography light — particularly the golden hour at dawn and dusk.
The Great Migration in July
July is when the migration enters its most dramatic phase. The herds have moved north from the central Serengeti and are concentrated in the western corridor and the northern Serengeti — Kogatende and the Lamai Wedge. The first Mara River crossings typically begin in late June or early July, depending on rainfall patterns.
A river crossing is one of the most extraordinary wildlife spectacles on the planet. Tens of thousands of wildebeest gather on the riverbank, hesitate, and then plunge into crocodile-infested water in a chaotic rush. Crossings are not predictable — the herds may gather at the river for hours or days before crossing, or may turn around entirely. Your guide's experience and positioning are the decisive factors in witnessing a crossing.
Safaris Tanzania guides have worked the northern Serengeti for decades. Kassim will position you at the right camps for the migration phase during your specific dates. This is not guesswork — it is local knowledge accumulated over 48 years of operating in the Serengeti.

Wildlife Beyond the Migration
Even without the migration, July delivers exceptional game viewing across the northern circuit:
- Serengeti: Lion prides are active throughout the day in cooler weather. Cheetah hunting on the short-grass plains is frequent. Leopards are visible in the Seronera Valley's sausage trees.
- Ngorongoro Crater: The crater floor is always productive, but July's dry conditions concentrate animals around the few water sources. Black rhino sightings are among the best this month.
- Tarangire: The Tarangire River becomes the only reliable water source in the area, pulling enormous elephant herds — 300+ animals at a time — down to the riverbanks. July is one of the best months for Tarangire elephant encounters.

Costs and Booking
July is peak season. Accommodation rates are at their annual highest. Popular camps and lodges in the northern Serengeti — the migration hotspot — sell out months in advance. The pricing reflects demand, not a quality difference in the safari itself.
Safaris Tanzania peak season pricing for July:
- 5-day northern circuit: $1,747 per person (vs $1,456 in shoulder season)
- 7-day Serengeti and Ngorongoro: $2,704 per person
- 10-day ultimate: From $3,536 per person
The price difference between peak and shoulder season is real but not dramatic for the mid-range tier. The significant cost increase is at the luxury end, where exclusive camps in the northern Serengeti charge premium rates that reflect their limited capacity (typically 6–12 guests).
Crowds
July is the busiest month in the Serengeti. The central Seronera area will have multiple vehicles at popular sightings — lion kills, leopard trees, and river crossings attract concentrated attention. This is the honest trade-off of peak season: the wildlife is exceptional, and so is the number of other vehicles watching it.
Strategies that help:
- Early starts. Most vehicles leave camp at 6:30–7:00 AM. Safaris Tanzania guides leave at 6:00 AM. The first 30–60 minutes in the park, before other vehicles arrive, are the quietest and often the most productive for sightings.
- Northern Serengeti. The Kogatende and Lamai areas are less accessible than Seronera, which reduces vehicle density. The migration is here in July, and the experience is significantly less crowded than central Serengeti.
- Private vehicle. Every Safaris Tanzania safari is private. You are not sharing with strangers or compromising on schedule. When your guide identifies a sighting, you move — no consensus required.
Is July Worth the Premium?
If the migration is your primary objective, July is the right month. The combination of river crossings, predator activity, and the sheer scale of the herds is not replicable in other months. The premium is justified by the experience.
If you want excellent general game viewing without migration as the focus, June or September offer comparable wildlife at lower prices and with fewer vehicles. Both months are dry season with strong predator activity and comfortable temperatures.
