June and July are the two most-requested months for Tanzania safaris, and clients frequently ask which is the better choice. The honest answer is: it depends on your priorities. This guide compares the two months across the factors that matter — migration timing, wildlife quality, prices, and crowds — so you can make the decision based on your own situation.

The Migration: Where Are the Herds?
June: The migration herds are moving north through the central and western Serengeti. They are typically in the Grumeti River area by mid-June, and the first Mara River crossings of the season sometimes occur in late June. River crossings are possible but not guaranteed — this is the start of crossing season rather than its peak. The herds are large and visible across the plains, often strung out in long columns moving toward the Mara.
July: The herds have reached the northern Serengeti — Kogatende and the Lamai Wedge — and Mara River crossings are active. July typically has the highest frequency of crossings: multiple crossings per week, sometimes per day. This is the peak of the event that most people think of when they imagine the Great Migration.
Verdict on migration: July wins for river crossings. June wins for watching the herds on the move across the plains and for the Grumeti River crossings, which receive fewer visitors than the northern Mara sites.
General Wildlife
Both June and July are excellent for general wildlife across the northern circuit. The distinction is in the specifics:
Serengeti resident wildlife: Equal in both months. Lion prides, leopards in the Seronera Valley, cheetah on the plains, and elephant are all fully present and active throughout June and July. The dry conditions in both months concentrate animals near water.
Ngorongoro Crater: Equal in both months. The crater floor is productive year-round. The crater rim is cold at dawn in both months — layers are essential.
Tarangire: Both months are good. The Tarangire River is a reliable water source in June and July, pulling elephant herds, predators, and large numbers of prey species. July is marginally better as the dry season advances further.

Prices
This is where June has a clear advantage.
June is classified as high season by Safaris Tanzania but not peak season. July is peak. The difference in accommodation cost is typically 15–25% at mid-range camps and higher at luxury-tier properties in the northern Serengeti.
Safaris Tanzania pricing comparison:
- 5-day northern circuit: $1,456 in June vs $1,747 in July
- 7-day Serengeti and Ngorongoro: $1,872 in June vs $2,704 in July
For a couple, the difference across a 7-day trip can be $1,664 or more. That is a meaningful amount.
Crowds
July is significantly busier than June across the northern circuit. The Serengeti's central Seronera area has multiple vehicles at popular sightings in July. The northern Serengeti crossing points attract concentrated traffic when crossings are imminent.
June has fewer visitors. Sightings are less likely to be shared with a convoy of other vehicles. The parks feel more spacious. For travellers who find the peak-season vehicle density disruptive, June is meaningfully different.
Booking Lead Time
June: Book 3–5 months in advance for reliable camp availability.
July: Book 6–9 months in advance. Northern Serengeti camps sell out first, often by October of the previous year for the following July. Waiting until April to book for July means limited or no availability at the best-positioned camps.

The Decision Framework
Choose June if:
- Budget is a consideration — the savings are real and significant
- You value fewer vehicles at sightings
- You want to see the migration herds on the plains rather than specifically at the Mara River
- You have flexibility in dates and have not booked far in advance
Choose July if:
- Witnessing a Mara River crossing is the primary objective of your trip
- Budget is less of a constraint than experience
- You have booked well in advance and northern Serengeti camps are available
- This is a once-in-a-lifetime trip and you want peak conditions
What Kassim Recommends
After 48 years of sending clients into the Serengeti in both months, the honest advice: June is consistently underrated, and many clients who were undecided and chose June based on budget come back saying it was the right decision. July is the right answer when river crossings are non-negotiable.
