The phrase "safari package" means different things depending on who is selling it. A broker selling a Tanzania safari package quotes one total price and pockets the difference between that price and the ground operator's actual cost. A direct ground operator quotes one total price that reflects the actual cost of the operation — park fees, accommodation, vehicle, and guide — with a transparent margin.
This guide explains what a Tanzania safari package includes, how to evaluate whether a package is good value, and how to choose the right package for your travel style and budget.
What a Tanzania Safari Package Includes
A well-structured Tanzania safari package quote covers every major cost of the trip. When you receive a quote from Safaris Tanzania, each of the following appears as a separate line item:
- National park entry fees — Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro Crater, Serengeti, and any other park on the itinerary. These are paid directly to TANAPA and are non-negotiable.
- Ngorongoro Crater descent fee — $208 per vehicle, required for any descent into the crater floor. This is shared across vehicle occupants.
- Accommodation — each camp or lodge, per night, on a full-board basis (all meals included). The package specifies the name and tier of each camp.
- Safari vehicle and guide — private 4x4 vehicle with a qualified English-speaking guide for the full duration.
- All ground transportation — airport transfers, travel between parks, and any other logistics included in the itinerary.
- Meals and drinking water — full board at camps, packed bush lunches on full game drive days.
What is not included in a standard package: international flights, Tanzania tourist visa ($104 for US citizens, paid on arrival), travel insurance, tips, alcohol, and personal purchases.
The Standard Tanzania Safari Itineraries
Most Tanzania safari packages fall into one of four standard lengths:
3 to 4 Days: Short Northern Circuit
Covers Tarangire and Ngorongoro Crater — two of Tanzania's finest parks in a compact timeframe. This suits travellers who have limited time or are combining Tanzania with a Zanzibar beach stay. A 4-day package for two people in mid-range tented accommodation costs approximately $2,912 to $3,744 total.
This itinerary is light — you will cover two excellent parks well, but you will not have time for the Serengeti. If wildlife viewing depth is your priority, add at least one more day.
5 to 6 Days: Classic Northern Circuit
The most popular Tanzania safari length. Adds the Serengeti to the Tarangire and Ngorongoro itinerary. A 6-day package covers the key highlights with enough time inside each park for multiple game drives and wildlife variety. This is the itinerary most first-time Tanzania safari travellers choose.
For two people in mid-range tented lodges, a 6-day package costs approximately $4,368 to $5,720 total. Park fees for the full circuit add up quickly, which is why the per-person cost is not dramatically lower than a 7-day.
7 to 8 Days: Full Northern Circuit
Adds depth to the Serengeti portion of the itinerary and allows for a full day inside the crater rather than combining it with a transit day. A 7-day safari for two people in mid-range accommodation costs approximately $5,720 to $7,280 total.
This is the sweet spot for most travellers. Enough time to feel the scale of the Serengeti, enough time in Ngorongoro to descend properly, and a day in Tarangire for the elephant herds and baobab landscapes.
10 to 14 Days: Extended Tanzania Safari
Adds the Central Circuit parks (Ruaha, Selous) or extended Serengeti time — including the western corridor or northern Serengeti for migration timing. A 10-day or longer safari for two in mid-range accommodation ranges from $8,320 to $12,480 total depending on the remoteness of the camps.
If you have more than 10 days for a Tanzania safari, it is worth extending to include a fly-camp walking safari or the western Selous, which offers a completely different Tanzania experience from the northern circuit.
Tented Lodge vs Luxury Camp vs Budget Camping
Within each itinerary length, the accommodation tier is the primary cost variable:
Budget camping: Set up at designated campsites inside or adjacent to national parks. Shared facilities. Nights under canvas with sounds of the bush audible. A budget camping package reduces per-person costs by $208 to $416 per night compared to mid-range. Suitable for experienced outdoor travellers who are comfortable with basic facilities.
Mid-range tented lodge: Permanent or semi-permanent tents with proper beds, en-suite bathrooms, and restaurant service. The most common choice for first-time safari travellers. The accommodation enhances the experience without the premium pricing of luxury camps. A mid-range tented lodge inside or adjacent to a national park costs $156 to $364 per person per night full board.
Luxury and semi-luxury camps: High-specification tents or permanent structures with premium furnishings, fine dining, and often private conservancy access outside the national parks. A luxury camp costs $416 to $1,248+ per person per night full board. The guiding and wildlife access are comparable to mid-range — the premium is for the accommodation experience.
How to Evaluate a Safari Package Quote
Not all packages with the same itinerary description are equivalent. When comparing quotes, check:
- Park fees included: Are all park fees listed separately at official rates? Or are park fees bundled into the total, making it impossible to verify?
- Named camps: Does the quote name the specific accommodation, or does it say "mid-range lodge" without specifying which one? Unnamed camps can be switched to cheaper alternatives after booking.
- Vehicle sharing: Is the vehicle private to your group, or will strangers be added? Private vehicle safaris cost more per person but deliver a significantly better experience.
- Guide continuity: Will you have the same guide for the entire safari, or will you be handed off between operators at park boundaries?
- Single total vs itemised breakdown: An itemised quote is a sign of operator confidence and transparency. A single total figure is a sign that margins may be hidden.
Package Extras to Budget For
These items are typically not included in safari packages and should be budgeted separately:
- Balloon safari over the Serengeti: $572 to $624 per person. The Serengeti balloon safari is a once-in-a-lifetime experience and worth adding if your budget allows.
- Ngorongoro crater rim lunch: Some packages include this; others charge separately. The rim lunch is a memorable experience — confirm whether it is included.
- Airport transfer: Typically $52 to $83 per person from Kilimanjaro Airport to Arusha, or included in a well-structured package.
- Tipping budget: $21 to $42 per person per day for your guide is appropriate. Camp staff receive tips separately, typically $5 to $10 per person per night.
Why Book a Safari Package From a Direct Operator
A package booked from a direct operator costs less than the same package from a broker for one simple reason: there is no commission layer. A broker selling a $5,200 package charges you $5,200 and pays the ground operator $3,640. A direct operator selling the same $5,200 package keeps $5,200, of which $3,640 goes to the actual safari operation and $1,560 is the operating margin.
You get the same guide, the same vehicle, the same camps, and the same wildlife access. The broker does not add anything to the experience — they subtract from your wallet.
