Most first-time safari buyers ask the same question: "What exactly is in a Tanzania safari package, and how do I know if I'm comparing apples with apples?" It is a fair question. The safari industry has a packaging culture that varies enormously between operators, and the inclusions — or exclusions — can mean the difference between a trip that costs what you expected and one that arrives with hundreds of dollars in surprise add-ons.
This guide explains what a standard Tanzania safari package includes, what is typically excluded, and how to evaluate packages from different operators on equal terms.
What Is a Tanzania Safari Package?
A Tanzania safari package is an all-in-one price for your safari experience. Unlike booking flights, accommodation, and tours separately, a package bundles the core components together. The standard package from a ground operator like Safaris Tanzania includes:
- All national park entry fees
- Accommodation throughout the safari
- All meals during the safari
- A professional, licensed safari guide
- Transportation in a four-wheel-drive safari vehicle with pop-up roof
- Game drives in all specified parks
- Airport transfers to and from Arusha
- Bottled water throughout the trip
What is typically described as a "package" by a ground operator is a fully inclusive trip. What is described as a "package" by a broker or travel agent may be considerably less inclusive — sometimes only transport and park fees, with accommodation booked separately at rates that generate commission.
The Three Main Package Tiers
Budget Safari Packages — $832–1,400 Per Person
Budget safari packages typically use community-run campsites or basic guesthouses rather than permanent lodges. Accommodation is clean and functional — think comfortable tents with real beds and shared or semi-private bathroom facilities. Food is freshly prepared by a cook who travels with the group.
A 5-day budget northern circuit package from Safaris Tanzania starts at $884 per person and includes: park fees for Serengeti and Ngorongoro, all accommodation, all meals, a professional guide, and a 4WD vehicle. The saving compared to a mid-range package comes from accommodation choice, not from cutting guide quality or vehicle standards.
Budget packages are genuinely good value. The wildlife experience in the Serengeti is identical whether you are sleeping in a permanent luxury tented camp or a well-run campsite nearby. What changes is the comfort level after the game drive ends.
Best for: Travellers prioritising the wildlife experience over accommodation luxury, families on a defined budget, and experienced safari-goers who plan to upgrade on future trips.
Mid-Range Safari Packages — $1,456–2,200 Per Person
Mid-range packages use comfortable lodges and tented camps with en-suite facilities, quality bedding, and often a bar and restaurant on site. Accommodation choices at this level include properties like Ang'Ate Tented Lodge near Serengeti, Eileen's Trees in Karatu, and Marera Valley Lodge in Ngorongoro — places that balance genuine comfort with an authentic safari atmosphere.
A 7-day mid-range northern circuit package typically covers Serengeti, Ngorongoro, and Tarangire with accommodation in the $83–150 per person per night range. At this level, you are not paying for luxury frills — you are paying for reliable hot water, comfortable beds, and lodges in excellent locations inside or adjacent to the parks.
Best for: Most travellers. Mid-range packages deliver the complete Tanzania safari experience with genuine comfort. This is the most popular tier for first-time visitors.
Luxury Safari Packages — $2,288–4,500+ Per Person
Luxury safari packages use premium tented camps and lodges — think Singita, andBeyond, or Asilia properties — with high levels of service, fine dining, and locations inside the national parks. At this level, packages often include private game drives, bush dinners, sundowner drinks in scenic locations, and in some cases hot air balloon flights over the Serengeti.
For clients who want the absolute best available accommodation with every comfort attended to, luxury packages deliver an exceptional experience. For most travellers, however, the wildlife viewing from a mid-range package is identical — you are in the same vehicles, in the same parks, with the same guides.
Best for: Honeymoon couples, travellers celebrating special occasions, and those for whom accommodation luxury is a core part of the travel experience.
What's Included in a Safaris Tanzania Package
Every Safaris Tanzania safari package is priced transparently and includes the following at a minimum:
- Park fees: All national park entry fees for the duration of the itinerary. No hidden additions.
- Accommodation: All lodging as specified in the itinerary, based on the package tier selected.
- Meals: Three meals per day throughout the safari, prepared by our own cook or at the lodge restaurant.
- Guide: A professional, TANAPA-certified safari guide for the full duration. You get the same guide throughout — no handovers.
- Vehicle: A 4WD Land Cruiser or similar with pop-up roof for game viewing. Maximum 7 passengers per vehicle to ensure everyone has a window seat.
- Water: Unlimited bottled water throughout the trip.
- Airport transfers: Collection from Kilimanjaro International Airport and return transfer on departure.
- Crater service fee: Ngorongoro Crater vehicle fee — often a surprise add-on with other operators, included in our quote upfront.
What's Not Included
Honest operators will clearly state what is excluded. Safaris Tanzania excludes the following from standard packages:
- International flights: We recommend flights to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), but we do not book or price these as they vary too widely.
- Tanzania visa: Available on arrival at $52 for most nationalities, orapply in advance via the e-visa system.
- Travel insurance: Comprehensive travel insurance including medical evacuation is strongly recommended for all Tanzania visitors.
- Gratuities: Guide and camp staff tips are at your discretion. Industry standard is $16–25 per person per day for your guide.
- Balloon safari: Hot air balloon flights over the Serengeti are an optional add-on at approximately $520–600 per person.
- Zanzibar extensions: Beach extensions to Zanzibar are priced separately — see our Zanzibar extension itinerary.
- Personal purchases: Souvenirs, alcohol beyond what is included at lodges, and similar items.
How to Compare Safari Packages on Equal Terms
The most common mistake when comparing safari packages is looking only at the headline price. A package that appears $208 cheaper may simply be excluding park fees or offering lower-quality accommodation. Here is how to compare properly:
Step 1: Get the Full Inclusions List
Request a complete inclusions breakdown from each operator you are comparing. Every serious operator will provide this. If an operator cannot or will not itemise what is included, that is a red flag.
Step 2: Check the Park Fee Line
Tanzania national park fees are fixed by TANAPA. For a 7-day northern circuit (Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire), the park fees alone total approximately $624–700 per person. If an operator's package is only $208 below competitors, they are almost certainly excluding park fees and will ask you to pay them locally. Confirm this before comparing.
Step 3: Verify the Accommodation Tier
Ask specifically: "What lodge or camp will I stay at on nights 3, 4, and 5 of the itinerary?" If the operator cannot name the property, you may receive whatever is available at booking time — which can mean a significant downgrade from what you expected.
Step 4: Ask About Vehicle Sharing
Some operators combine unrelated bookings into a single vehicle to reduce per-person costs. This is common with budget operators and group tours. Safaris Tanzania prices for private tours — you book as your own group and do not share with strangers.
Step 5: Confirm the Guide Is Direct
Ask: "Will the guide who meets us at the airport be the same guide throughout?" With direct operators, yes. With brokers, you may meet a different guide at each park as the booking is passed between operators.

Tanzania Safari Package FAQ
What is the difference between a package and booking a safari separately?
A package bundles accommodation, transport, park fees, meals, and guiding into a single price. Booking separately means coordinating each component individually — finding lodges, booking vehicles, paying park fees, hiring a guide. Packages are more convenient and typically cheaper because operators have negotiated rates with camps. Direct ground operators like Safaris Tanzania offer the same packages at significantly lower prices than brokers because there is no commission margin added.
How far in advance should I book a Tanzania safari package?
For peak season (June–October and December–February), book at least 3–4 months in advance to secure your preferred accommodation. For green season (April–May, November), 4–6 weeks is often sufficient. Safaris Tanzania can usually accommodate shorter-notice bookings — WhatsApp us to check availability.
Can I customise a Tanzania safari package?
Every Safaris Tanzania package is customisable. Our standard itineraries are starting points — we adjust duration, parks, accommodation tier, and activities based on your interests, dates, and budget. A private safari means you do not accept a cookie-cutter itinerary.
Are Tanzania safari packages safer in a group or private?
Private safari packages — where your group books exclusively — are generally safer and more flexible than group packages where you share a vehicle with strangers. Private tours allow you to set your own departure time, extend game drives when something extraordinary is happening, and skip parks that did not meet expectations. Safaris Tanzania only operates private safaris; we do not sell seat-only group packages.
