Print this checklist and work through it before your Tanzania safari. The list is organised into six sections. Work top to bottom — by the time you reach the bottom, you will be ready.
Clothing
The two rules that govern every item you pack: neutral colours only, and layerable. Tanzania safari parks sit at altitude — the Ngorongoro Crater rim is 2,300 metres. Mornings can be 8°C; by 11am on the Serengeti plains it is 28°C. You need to add and remove layers throughout each day.
- 3–4 long-sleeve shirts in khaki, tan, olive or brown
- 2–3 short-sleeve T-shirts in the same neutral tones
- 1 fleece or lightweight down jacket for cold mornings
- 1 lightweight rain jacket or windbreaker (all seasons)
- 2–3 pairs of lightweight trousers or zip-off convertible pants
- 1 pair of shorts (optional — most clients wear trousers on game drives)
- 5–6 pairs of socks (merino wool or synthetic, not cotton)
- Underwear sufficient for each safari day plus two extras
- Swimwear if your lodge has a pool
- Sleepwear (lightweight — nights are cool but lodges provide bedding)
Avoid white, bright colours, and any camouflage pattern. White shows red dust within hours. Bright colours startle wildlife and disturb other guests at sightings. Camouflage is illegal in Tanzania.
Footwear
- Broken-in hiking shoes or light trekking boots — closed toe, ankle support
- Sandals or camp shoes for lodge evenings and shower
- Thick socks to wear with boots
Test your shoes before you leave. Walk 5 miles in them. If they cause hot spots or discomfort, replace them. Blisters acquired on the first game drive will make every subsequent day miserable.
Sun and Dust Protection
- Wide-brim sun hat (7cm+ brim — baseball caps leave ears and neck exposed)
- Sunglasses with UV400 protection
- SPF 50+ sunscreen (large bottle — more than you think you need)
- Lip balm with SPF
- Buff or neck gaiter for dusty game drives
The equatorial sun at altitude is intense. Ngorongoro Crater sits at 2,300m — you burn faster than you expect even on overcast days. Apply sunscreen every two hours on game drives.
Health and Medical
- Malaria prophylaxis (consult your GP at least 6 weeks before travel)
- Yellow fever vaccination certificate (required if arriving from an endemic country; recommended for all visitors)
- DEET insect repellent (30–50% concentration) — apply at dawn and dusk
- High-SPF sunscreen (50+, reapply every 2 hours)
- Antihistamines for allergic reactions to bites or dust
- Anti-diarrheal medication (dietary change is common in the first days)
- Rehydration sachets for hot weather
- Personal prescription medications with documentation
- Blister treatment (moleskin or blister pads)
- Basic first aid: plasters, antiseptic wipes, antibiotic ointment
Camera and Electronics
- Camera with telephoto lens (200mm minimum for wildlife)
- Spare camera batteries and memory cards — charge every night
- Dust-proof bag or dry bag for camera gear
- Portable power bank (10,000–20,000 mAh)
- Universal power adapter (Tanzania uses UK-style three-pin plugs)
- Headlamp with spare batteries
- Small daypack for game drive essentials
Binoculars are not on the optional list. Bring one pair per person, 8x42 or 10x42规格. Many wildlife encounters happen beyond comfortable naked-eye viewing distance. Cheap compact binoculars frustrate more than they help — buy or rent quality ones.
Documents and Money
- Passport (valid for 6 months beyond your travel dates)
- Tanzania visa ($52 per person — apply at evisa.immigration.go.tz before departure)
- Travel insurance documents including medical evacuation coverage (printed and digital)
- Yellow fever vaccination certificate (if applicable)
- Airline tickets and lodge confirmation printouts
- Emergency contact list (share your itinerary with someone at home)
- Credit and debit cards (Visa and Mastercard widely accepted; notify your bank before travel)
- Cash in USD or Tanzanian Shillings — small denominations for tips and incidentals
Luggage Tip
Pack into a soft-sided duffel or backpack under 15kg. If you are flying between parks on small aircraft, the luggage limit is typically 15kg total including hand luggage. A soft bag fits vehicle storage racks more easily than a rigid suitcase. Keep a small daypack for your game drive essentials — water, sunscreen, camera, binoculars.
What to Leave at Home
- Formal dress or heels — safari camps are casual
- Heavy hiking boots (unless you are combining with a Kilimanjaro trek)
- Bright or white clothing
- Expensive jewellery
- More than 4 shirts for a 5-day safari — lodges offer same-day laundry
