Packing for a Tanzania safari involves specific trade-offs that generic packing guides do not address well. The environment involves fine red dust, strong equatorial sun, temperature swings between early mornings and midday, and limited laundry access. This list covers what actually matters based on the conditions you will encounter.

The Core Principle: Neutral, Layerable, Dust-Resistant

Safari clothing needs to work in three conditions: cool (6-12°C) before dawn and after sunset, warm (25-35°C) midday, and dusty at all times. Layering is more practical than packing separate heavy and light items. Neutral and earth tones (khaki, olive, tan, grey) are recommended not for aesthetics but because they show less dust and do not attract insects the way bright colours can.

Do not pack white. It will be red by the end of day one in Tarangire.

Clothing

Tops

  • 3-4 long-sleeve shirts in neutral tones. Long sleeves protect against sun and insects during game drives without needing sunscreen reapplication. Lightweight linen or moisture-wicking synthetics work well. Cotton is fine but dries slowly.
  • 2 short-sleeve or sleeveless tops for camp time and warmer midday hours.
  • 1 thermal or base layer top for early morning game drives, particularly if visiting Ngorongoro Crater (crater floor mornings can be 8-10°C).
  • 1 light fleece or soft-shell jacket. More versatile than a heavy down jacket for the temperature range you will experience.

Bottoms

  • 2 pairs of lightweight trousers or zip-off pants. Trousers protect your legs during game drives. Zip-offs convert to shorts efficiently.
  • 1 pair of shorts or a skirt for camp evenings and relaxed time at lodges.
  • 1 pair of leggings — doubles as a base layer for cold mornings and as casual evening wear.

Underwear and Socks

Merino wool or moisture-wicking synthetic underwear handles sweat and dries faster than cotton. Pack enough for each day of safari plus two extra. Bring 4-5 pairs of ankle socks and one pair of warm socks for cold mornings in the Ngorongoro Highlands.

Swimwear

Most lodges and camps have a pool. One swimsuit is sufficient.

Footwear

  • Closed-toe walking shoes or light hiking shoes. You will walk on uneven ground at camps and on optional bush walks. Trail runners work well. Dedicated hiking boots are unnecessary unless you are trekking Mount Meru or Kilimanjaro.
  • Sandals or flip-flops for camp and lodge downtime.
  • Avoid bright white trainers. They will not stay white and they stand out on game walks where you want to blend into the environment.

Sun and Dust Protection

  • Wide-brim hat. A hat with a brim of at least 7 cm provides meaningful sun protection on open game drives. Baseball caps leave your ears and neck exposed.
  • Sunglasses with UV400 protection. Essential. The equatorial sun at altitude (Ngorongoro is 2,300m) is intense.
  • SPF 50 sunscreen. Bring enough for daily application for your full safari duration. It is available in Arusha but expensive and limited in selection.
  • Lip balm with SPF. Often overlooked. Lips burn faster than skin.
  • Buff or lightweight scarf. Covers nose and mouth during dusty game drives. More practical than a mask.

Health and Toiletries

  • Insect repellent with DEET (30-50%). Apply at dawn and dusk, particularly during the wet season. Tanzania has malaria in lower-altitude areas including Tarangire and Serengeti — do not rely on repellent alone; take prescribed antimalarials.
  • Hand sanitiser. Camp hand-washing facilities vary.
  • Personal menstrual products. Tampon availability outside Arusha is unreliable. Bring what you need. A menstrual cup is the most practical option given limited disposal options in remote camps.
  • Prescription medications and first aid basics. Include altitude sickness medication if visiting Ngorongoro Crater rim (2,300m) or trekking.
  • Travel insurance documentation. Keep digital and paper copies.

Camera and Electronics

  • Dust-proof camera bag or dry bag. Red dust infiltrates everything. A sealed bag or a dry bag inside your camera bag protects gear significantly.
  • Extra memory cards and charged batteries. Camp charging is available but game drives are long.
  • Universal power adapter. Tanzania uses UK-style three-pin plugs.
  • Portable power bank. For charging phones and headphones during long drives.

Bag Strategy

Most safari vehicles have limited luggage space. A soft-sided duffel bag (under 15kg) fits in vehicle storage racks better than a rigid suitcase. A small daypack carries what you need for game drives. If you are flying between parks on small aircraft, luggage limits are typically 15kg total including hand luggage — check your specific flights.

What to Leave at Home

  • Heavy hiking boots (unless trekking)
  • Formal wear — dinner at safari camps is casual
  • Full-size toiletry bottles — decant into travel sizes
  • Bright or white clothing
  • Jewellery beyond minimal practical pieces
