This guide gives you accurate Tanzania safari pricing for 2026 — updated March. Every price reflects what operators actually charge when you book direct, not the inflated figures that travel agents and online brokers add on top.
Tanzania safari pricing is confusing because there is no standard pricing. Every operator structures costs differently. Some quote park fees separately. Some include them. Some quote per person, some per group. This guide cuts through that confusion and gives you the real numbers.
I have been pricing safaris for Safaris Tanzania since 1978. These are the numbers we actually quote.
Tanzania Safari Pricing: Daily Rate by Lodge Tier
Your accommodation choice determines roughly 60% of your total safari cost. Here are 2026 daily rates per person, inclusive of lodging, meals, game drives, park fees, and guide:
Budget Tier — $125–$187 per person per day
What you get: Basic tented camps and smaller lodges. Clean, functional rooms with en-suite or shared bathrooms. Tented camps may be seasonal (open during dry season only). Hot water may be limited. Food is adequate but simple.
Lodge examples: Public campsites with pre-erected tents, small owner-run lodges in Karatu, seasonal tented camps in the Serengeti (outside the Migration zone).
Who it suits: Backpackers, solo travellers on a budget, experienced safari-goers who spend their days on game drives and not in their room.
5-day total (budget): $624–$936 per person
Mid-Range Tier — $187–$291 per person per day
What you get: Good permanent camps and solid 3-star lodges. En-suite bathrooms with reliable hot water. Quality bedding, good food, professional service. Some camps have pools. This is where most first-time safari travellers land — and it is genuinely comfortable.
Lodge examples: Tented camps in the Serengeti with permanent structures, lodges on the Ngorongoro Crater rim, permanent tented camps in Tarangire with river views.
Who it suits: Most travellers — couples, families, first-timers and repeat visitors who want quality without ultra-luxury pricing.
5-day total (mid-range): $936–$1,456 per person
7-day total (mid-range): $1,310–$2,038 per person
Premium Tier — $312–$468 per person per day
What you get: Luxury tented camps and 4-5 star lodges. Private decks, plunge pools, exceptional food, guides who are expert naturalists, private game drives, premium beverages included, bush dinners and sunrise breakfasts in remote locations.
Lodge examples: Legendary camps in prime Serengeti locations (Kusini, Lamai, Dunia), Crater rim lodges with panoramic views, exclusive Tarangire tented camps with butler service.
Who it suits: Honeymooners, luxury travellers, photographers wanting exclusive access, anniversary celebrations, travellers who have done safaris before and want the premium version.
5-day total (premium): $1,560–$2,340 per person
7-day total (premium): $2,184–$3,276 per person
Ultra-Luxury — $468+ per person per day
What you get: The very top tier of Tanzanian safari — Singita, Four Seasons Serengeti, &Beyond, Asilia's premium camps. Private conservancies (no crowds), private vehicles, personal chef, spa treatments, and in some cases private butlers.
Who it suits: Those for whom budget is genuinely not a consideration, or those celebrating once-in-a-lifetime milestones who want absolute exclusivity.
5-day total (ultra-luxury): $2,600–$4,160+ per person
Park Fees 2026 (Non-Negotiable Costs)
Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA) sets park fees. They apply to everyone, every operator, and are not negotiable. These are 2026 rates:
| Park / Area | Fee per Person per Day | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Serengeti National Park | $73 | Highest of all parks — and most worth it |
| Ngorongoro Crater (Conservation Area) | $73 + $208 vehicle fee | $208 vehicle fee is one-time per vehicle |
| Tarangire National Park | $52 | Best elephant viewing in Tanzania |
| Lake Manyara National Park | $52 | Tree-climbing lions, lakeshore birding |
| Arusha National Park | $47 | Good for first arrival/departure day |
| NCA (Ngorongoro Conservation Area) — crater rim | $42 | If not descending into crater |
Example: 5-day Northern Circuit park fees per person:
- Tarangire: 1 day × $52 = $52
- Serengeti: 2 days × $73 = $146
- Ngorongoro: 1 day × $73 + share of $208 vehicle fee = ~$104
- Total park fees per person: approximately $302
Seasonal Pricing Variations 2026
Tanzania safari pricing changes significantly by season. Here is the 2026 calendar:
Peak Season: July–October (Great Migration)
The Migration crosses the Mara River in the Northern Serengeti (July–September) — one of the most dramatic wildlife events on earth. July–October is peak pricing: 10–20% above base rates. Accommodation in the Northern Serengeti is at a premium and books out months in advance.
Best for: Photographers, those specifically wanting to see the Migration crossing, travellers who have been to Africa before.
High Season: December–February (Calving Season)
The Great Migration calving season in the Ndutu region (December–March). Zebra and wildebeest births happen in their thousands. Predators follow. This is arguably the best wildlife viewing in Tanzania — and December–February reflects that in pricing.
Best for: Wildlife enthusiasts, photographers, families (February half-term peak).
Shoulder Season: June, November
June marks the start of the dry season — the landscape is still green from the long rains but wildlife begins concentrating around water sources. November is the short rains — landscapes turn green, fewer crowds, excellent value. Pricing is 10–20% below peak.
Best for: Budget-conscious travellers, photographers seeking green landscapes, those who don't mind the possibility of rain.
Low Season: March–May (Long Rains)
The long rains make some roads muddy and harder to navigate, and some camps close. But wildlife concentrations around water sources are high, landscapes are lush and beautiful, and this is when Tanzania is at its most photogenic and most affordable. Pricing is 20–40% below peak — this is genuinely good value for money.
Best for: Photographers, budget travellers, experienced safari-goers who know how to work with the seasons.
Private vs Group Safari Pricing
Group (Join-In) Safari
You share the vehicle and guide with other travellers — typically 6–8 people per vehicle. Game drives follow a fixed schedule. This is the most affordable way to do a safari.
Savings vs private: 25–35% per person for the same lodge tier.
Who it suits: Solo travellers, budget groups, sociable travellers who enjoy meeting others on safari.
Private Safari
Your own vehicle, your own guide, your own schedule. You decide when to leave, when to stop, when to linger at a sighting.
Premium vs group: 30–50% more per person for the same lodge tier.
Who it suits: Families with young children, photographers, honeymooners, travellers with specific accessibility needs, anyone who values flexibility over cost.
