August is the peak of Tarangire National Park's dry season — the month when the wildlife spectacle the park is known for reaches its annual maximum. The Tarangire River is the only water for hundreds of square kilometres in every direction. Everything comes to it.

August Wildlife: The Numbers

The concentration of elephants in Tarangire in August is among the most extraordinary wildlife phenomena in Africa. Family groups from across the Maasai steppe ecosystem converge on the river. On a single morning game drive, seeing 300–500 elephants — across multiple family groups, in successive sightings along the river — is entirely realistic. Seeing 1,000 in a day is possible during peak August weeks.

The elephant experience in August is qualitatively different from what you encounter in the Serengeti or Ngorongoro. You are watching a seasonal migration play out in real time — the same ancient movement that these families have made for generations, dictated by rain and river. The matriarchs know exactly where the water is. The calves follow. The herds interact at the drinking points with a complexity of social behaviour that rewards patient observation.

Beyond elephants:

  • Lion: The prey concentration brings lions into predictable zones. August is one of Tarangire's best months for lion predation events — with prey forced to water, ambush opportunities multiply.
  • Leopard: Resident population in the riverine forest. Early morning drives yield the highest probability of sightings as leopards return from night hunting.
  • Oryx, fringe-eared oryx specifically — Tarangire is one of very few places to see this subspecies in significant numbers. August concentrations near water make them easy to observe.
  • Giraffe, zebra, wildebeest: All in large numbers as the river draws the full grassland fauna.

Weather in August

Peak dry season. Virtually no rainfall. Temperatures 20–28°C during the day; mornings at 13–16°C. The dust on the game drive tracks is significant in August — the driest month of the year. Pack camera equipment accordingly. Bring a neck buff or scarf for the open vehicle sections.

How August Compares to Serengeti in August

In August, most Tanzania safari visitors choose the northern Serengeti for the Great Migration river crossings. Tarangire receives far fewer visitors despite offering wildlife in comparable or greater density. The camps are quieter. The viewpoints are not overwhelmed. For travellers who have already seen or do not prioritise the Mara crossings, August in Tarangire may offer a more satisfying overall experience than a crowded August Serengeti.

A combined itinerary — three nights Tarangire, three nights Serengeti — gives you both. Kassim designs these regularly. WhatsApp +255 786 110 786 with your dates and he will tell you honestly which combination makes sense given camp availability in August.

Photography in August

August in Tarangire is one of the most photographed months in the Tanzania safari calendar — and for good reason. The combination of golden dry-season grass, enormous elephant herds at the river, and the iconic baobab silhouettes against clear blue skies produces images that define the East African safari aesthetic. For photographers, August is a month of abundance: wildlife is concentrated, light is strong, and compositions present themselves at every turn.

The dust in the air in August — the dry-season trade wind known as the kaskazi — adds a warm haze to distant subjects and produces the characteristic golden glow in late-afternoon images. Elephant family groups against a baobab backdrop, lions on a kill with vultures overhead, and the river itself with dozens of elephants at the waterline are all standard August sightings that produce portfolio-quality images with minimal effort.

The trade-off is the number of vehicles at the most famous sightings. A pride of lions at the river in August will attract multiple vehicles, which affects the naturalism of wildlife behaviour photography. The solution is to work the less-visited areas of the park — the Silale swamp, the Mkungunero area in the south — where August wildlife is equally impressive but vehicle numbers are lower.

Typical August Day in Tarangire

A full day in Tarangire in August follows a consistent pattern. Departure from camp at 5:30am for the first morning drive — essential for catching predators active at dawn and for reaching the river area before the elephant concentrations peak. The morning drive typically runs 3–4 hours, covering the main river circuit and the acacia woodland areas.

Mid-morning is spent at a picnic site or returning to camp for rest. August midday heat is significant — 28–32°C — and rest during the heat is advisable both for comfort and for wildlife viewing ethics (animals are less active in midday heat). Afternoon departures are typically 3pm, with the last light producing the strongest photographic conditions of the day. Return to camp by 6:30pm.

Two nights in Tarangire in August is the minimum for a meaningful visit. Three nights is better — it allows a full day in the southern Mkungunero area, where August wild dog sightings are more reliable than anywhere else on the northern circuit, and where vehicle numbers are significantly lower than the main river circuit.

August vs September: Which Is the Peak?

August and September are both peak months in Tarangire, with marginally higher elephant concentrations in August and marginally lower vehicle numbers in September. The difference between the two months is small enough that availability — which camp you can book — is often the deciding factor rather than wildlife quality.

Both months command peak-season pricing. If you are working to a budget, June and October offer 80% of the August wildlife experience at significantly lower prices. August is the month for travellers who have locked in their plans 6–12 months in advance and are committed to the premier wildlife window.

Why August Is Worth the Cost

August is expensive. There is no way around it — peak-season pricing at Tarangire's best camps reflects genuine scarcity. Camps book out 9–12 months ahead. Availability at the top properties in August is already gone for most travellers by the time they start planning.

But the cost is real value if you want the very best of Tarangire. The elephant concentrations in August are not replicated anywhere else in Tanzania. The predator activity — lions, leopards, and the occasional wild dog sighting in the southern section — is at its most consistent. And the park's iconic landscapes, the baobabs and the river with its enormous herds, are at their most dramatic.

Booking direct with Safaris Tanzania in August means paying the actual camp rates without broker margins added on top. For a 7-day August itinerary that includes Tarangire, Serengeti, and Ngorongoro, eliminating the broker margin can represent meaningful savings — savings that can be redirected to a better camp or an extra night. Safaris Tanzania has been running August Tarangire safaris since 1978. We know which camps are genuinely worth the August premium and which are simply charging it because they can.

See the 7-day northern circuit for a standard itinerary that includes Tarangire. Extended Tarangire options are available on request.
