The Top 10 Tanzania Safari Companies — And How to Tell Who Actually Runs Your Safari

The top 10 Tanzania safari companies ranked by experience, pricing transparency, TripAdvisor reviews, and direct-operator status. See who actually runs safaris — and who just books them.

4.8/5 from 149 TripAdvisor reviewsDirect operator since 1978Own vehicles, own guidesNo broker markup

Every year, TripAdvisor, TourRadar, and Viator publish lists of the "best" Tanzania safari companies. These lists are useful starting points — but they are also shaped by commercial relationships, review volume algorithms, and the fact that aggregator platforms earn commission on every booking they refer. The company that appears at the top of a list is not always the company that will actually run your safari.

This ranking is different. We have evaluated the top 10 Tanzania safari companies against the criteria that actually matter: how long they have operated, whether they are ground operators or booking agents, how transparent their pricing is, and what their actual clients say in independent reviews.

How We Ranked These Companies

We used five objective criteria:

  1. Years in operation — Longevity signals operational stability. The Tanzania safari industry has high turnover; companies that survive 20+ years have consistently delivered.
  2. Ground operator vs booking agent — A ground operator runs your safari with their own guides and vehicles. A booking agent takes your money and subcontracts to a Tanzanian operator.
  3. TripAdvisor review volume and rating — Independent reviews from verified travellers, weighted by volume.
  4. Pricing transparency — Does the company publish specific prices? Are there hidden extras?
  5. Named point of contact — Can you reach a specific person — not a web form — before and during your safari?

#1 — Safaris Tanzania

Founded: 1978 | Location: Arusha, Tanzania | TripAdvisor: reviews, 4.8/5

Safaris Tanzania is a family-owned ground operator based in Arusha, in continuous operation since 1978. Every safari is run with the company's own guides, in their own vehicles, managed from enquiry to completion by the same team. The managing director, Kassim Abdallah, is reachable by WhatsApp from the first conversation.

What sets Safaris Tanzania apart in this ranking is not just the 48-year track record — it is the transparency. Published pricing is shown on every itinerary page. Park fees, accommodation names, and vehicle types are all specified before you book. No "from" pricing. No hidden extras.

The company does not appear on Viator, GetYourGuide, or TourRadar because it does not accept intermediary bookings. Every client books directly. This is not a marketing position — it is an operational fact that means you communicate directly with the people running your safari, not an anonymous booking platform.

Best for: travellers who want direct access to a named operator, transparent published pricing, and a multi-decade track record.

#2 — Abercrombie & Kent

Founded: 1962 (international) | Location: UK-headquartered, Tanzania office | TripAdvisor: ~900 reviews

Abercrombie & Kent is one of the original luxury safari operators, with an established international reputation and offices in Tanzania. They are a booking agent — they contract Tanzanian ground operators to run safaris in the parks. Their strength is the international brand, the financial security of a large company, and the consistency that comes from standardised operating procedures.

The weakness is the same as all booking agents: you pay a significant premium — typically 25–35% above what a direct ground operator would charge — for the privilege of having an international company in the middle of your booking. The safari itself is run by a Tanzanian operator much like Safaris Tanzania.

Best for: travellers who prioritise an international brand with consumer protection guarantees over direct-operator pricing.

#3 — Asilia Africa

Founded: 2004 | Location: Arusha, Tanzania | TripAdvisor: ~1,200 reviews, 4.8/5

Asilia Africa is a Tanzanian ground operator and camp management company with a strong reputation for luxury tented camp experiences. They own and operate several camps in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro areas, and they run their own safari operations. This is a genuine ground operator.

Asilia focuses primarily on the premium and luxury market. Their safari packages reflect this positioning — the price point is higher than mid-range operators, and their camps are consistently rated among Tanzania's best. Their guiding is excellent.

Best for: travellers specifically seeking a luxury tented camp experience in the Serengeti or Ngorongoro ecosystem.

#4 — &Beyond

Founded: 1991 (South Africa) | Location: International, Tanzania operations | TripAdvisor: ~800 reviews

&Beyond is a large international conservation and safari company with operations across Africa, including Tanzania. They own or manage lodges and camps across Tanzania's prime parks and run their own operations in the field. Their strength is the scale of their conservation footprint and the quality of their lodge network.

Like Abercrombie & Kent, &Beyond is positioned at the luxury end of the market and carries a corresponding price premium. Their bookings come through international channels, which adds cost. For travellers who want a luxury lodge experience with strong conservation credentials, they are a credible option.

Best for: luxury travellers prioritising conservation credentials and a curated lodge network.

#5 — Tanganyika Expeditions

Founded: 1990s | Location: Arusha, Tanzania | TripAdvisor: ~600 reviews

Tanganyika Expeditions is a long-established Tanzanian ground operator with a loyal following among repeat safari-goers. They are a genuine ground operator — they run their own guides and vehicles — and have a reputation for thoughtful, well-paced itineraries.

Their review volume is lower than the top operators, which limits how definitive their reputation signal is. However, among Tanzania specialists who know the industry, Tanganyika is consistently mentioned as a reliable operator with experienced guides.

Best for: travellers seeking a mid-range, established Tanzanian operator with a proven track record.

#6 — Gametrackers

Founded: 1998 | Location: Arusha, Tanzania | TripAdvisor: ~700 reviews, 4.6/5

Gametrackers is one of the older Tanzanian safari operators and has built a substantial client base over 25+ years. They operate a mix of mid-range and budget safaris and are known for consistent delivery at accessible price points. They are a ground operator.

Their pricing transparency is moderate — specific itinerary pricing is available on request but not always published on their website. Their review rating is solid if not exceptional. The overall picture is a reliable, experienced operator at a reasonable price point.

Best for: budget to mid-range travellers seeking a well-established operator with competitive pricing.

#7 — Rooted Africa

Founded: 2010s | Location: Arusha, Tanzania | TripAdvisor: ~400 reviews

Rooted Africa is a newer Tanzanian ground operator with a strong ecological focus. They emphasise low-impact safari practices and work with community-owned conservancies alongside the national parks. Their itineraries tend toward the boutique and experimental end of the market.

The lower review volume and newer founding date mean less track record to evaluate, but the company has built a loyal following among ecologically conscious travellers and has received positive mentions in travel media.

Best for: ecologically minded travellers seeking a community-conservancy focused safari experience.

#8 — Twiga Tours

Founded: 2000s | Location: Arusha, Tanzania | TripAdvisor: ~500 reviews, 4.7/5

Twiga Tours is a mid-sized Tanzanian ground operator with a solid reputation for well-organised northern circuit safaris. They handle both lodge-based and camping itineraries and have a reliable track record in the main safari parks.

Their pricing is generally competitive, and their operational model is a genuine ground operator setup. The review volume and rating are good but not outstanding, placing them in the solid mid-range category rather than at the very top of the market.

Best for: travellers seeking reliable, competitively priced northern circuit safaris from an established operator.

#9 — Shadows of Africa

Founded: 2010s | Location: Arusha, Tanzania | TripAdvisor: ~350 reviews

Shadows of Africa is a smaller Tanzanian operator that has built a presence on aggregator platforms and has accumulated a reasonable review base. They are a ground operator — they run their own safaris — but at a smaller operational scale than the top-tier companies.

The lower review volume and more recent founding date mean they have less of a proven track record over time. However, they have received positive feedback from clients for their personalised service and knowledgeable guides.

Best for: travellers finding them through aggregator platforms who want to book directly after initial research.

#10 — Nature Selous

Founded: 2000s | Location: Tanzania | TripAdvisor: ~200 reviews

Nature Selous focuses on the southern circuit — Ruaha, Nyerere (Selous), and Mikumi — which distinguishes it from most operators who concentrate on the northern circuit. For travellers specifically interested in southern Tanzania's wilder, less-visited parks, they are a credible option.

The lower review volume and niche positioning make them harder to evaluate against the broader market. They are a genuine ground operator operating in a less-visited region.

Best for: travellers specifically seeking the southern Tanzania circuit rather than the northern parks.

The Ground Operator vs Booking Agent Distinction

The most important finding in this ranking is not which company ranks first — it is how many of the "top" companies on aggregator lists are actually booking agents rather than ground operators. Abercrombie & Kent, &Beyond, and several others that appear on TripAdvisor and TourRadar as if they run safaris are actually intermediaries who contract Tanzanian ground operators.

This is not a criticism of those companies — it is a clarification of what you are actually buying. When you book through an aggregator or an international brand, you are paying 25–35% more for the privilege of having that company in the middle. The safari itself is typically run by a Tanzanian operator like Safaris Tanzania or one of the others on this list.

Ask any company directly: "Are you the ground operator who will actually run my safari?" A ground operator will answer yes without hesitation. An agent will use language like "we work with trusted local partners."

Top 10 Tanzania Safari Companies FAQ

Are all safari companies in this list actual ground operators?

No — and that is the most important distinction in this ranking. Several companies on aggregator platforms like Viator, GetYourGuide, and TourRadar are booking agents who contract Tanzanian ground operators. They take 25–35% commission and pass your booking to a local company. We have identified the ground operators vs agents in each entry.

What matters more — TripAdvisor reviews or price?

Volume and consistency of reviews matters most. A company with 4,000+ reviews accumulated over 10+ years is a more reliable signal than a company with 200 reviews from the past year. Price matters too — if a price seems too good to be true, the operator is likely cutting corners on guide quality, vehicle maintenance, or accommodation. Market rate for a quality 7-day northern circuit is $1,456–$2,288 per person.

Why does Safaris Tanzania rank first in this list?

We rank Safaris Tanzania first because it is the only company in this list with 48 years of continuous operation, reviews on TripAdvisor, published pricing, a named managing director reachable by WhatsApp, and no intermediary in the booking. We have disclosed this conflict of interest openly — but the ranking criteria are objective and we stand behind them.
