February is one of the better months to visit Zanzibar. This guide covers the weather honestly, the sea conditions by area of the island, what the beaches are like, and how a Zanzibar extension fits with a February Tanzania safari.

Zanzibar Weather in February

February sits in Tanzania's dry inter-monsoon period — between the short rains (November–December) and the long rains (late March–May). The weather pattern in February is:

  • Temperatures: Hot. Zanzibar in February averages 28–32°C with high humidity. The heat is more intense than the mainland safari circuit because Zanzibar is at sea level with no altitude relief. Early morning and evening are comfortable; midday is genuinely hot.
  • Rainfall: Low. February is one of the driest months on the Zanzibar calendar. Short afternoon showers occur occasionally but extended rain is uncommon. It is not a risk that significantly affects beach plans.
  • Wind: Light. The northeast monsoon (Kaskazi) is active from December through March, bringing light, warm winds from the northeast. The east coast beaches benefit from this breeze; the west coast (Stone Town side) can be more still and humid.

Beach Conditions by Location

East coast (Paje, Bwejuu, Jambiani): The best beaches in February. The northeast monsoon produces a gentle breeze on the east coast, making the heat bearable. The Indian Ocean is warm — around 28°C. Seaweed can accumulate on the sand in places; this varies week to week and beach to beach. Nungwi and Kendwa on the north tip are largely seaweed-free due to deeper water and stronger currents.

North coast (Nungwi, Kendwa): Reliable in February. These beaches face north and catch the best of the February conditions — consistent warm water, low swells, good snorkelling visibility. Nungwi has more tourist infrastructure; Kendwa is quieter.

West coast (near Stone Town): The west coast beaches are not the destination in February. The tidal range on the west coast is significant — at low tide, the sea retreats hundreds of metres across sand flats, leaving the beach effectively unusable for swimming for several hours. Visitors staying near Stone Town who want to swim are better served going to the east or north coast for beach days.

Sea Temperature and Marine Activities

February sea temperature around Zanzibar is approximately 27–29°C — warm enough that a wetsuit is unnecessary for most people. Snorkelling visibility in February is generally good, particularly around Mnemba Atoll (accessible from the northeast coast) and the reefs around the south of the island.

Mnemba Atoll in February: visibility is often 15–20m. Green turtles are resident year-round at Mnemba. Whale sharks are not reliably present in February — their peak around Zanzibar is October–November and again in the short window around February–March, but it is not guaranteed. Ask at your hotel which whale shark sightings have been reported in your specific week.

Dolphin trips depart from Kizimkazi on the south coast year-round. February conditions are fine for this excursion.

Stone Town in February

Stone Town is walkable in February mornings and evenings. Midday is hot for walking through the narrow streets, but the shade and architecture make it more bearable than open-air locations. The Forodhani Gardens night food market operates year-round; the fish market and spice markets are active in February as normal.

Stone Town is UNESCO-listed and worth a half-day regardless of season. February crowds are moderate — not the peak of European school holidays, not the emptiness of the long rains. Most sites and tours are running normally.

February Zanzibar and Safari Combination

February is one of the best months to combine Zanzibar with a Tanzania northern circuit safari. On the mainland, February is the Ndutu calving season — 500,000 wildebeest calves born on the southern Serengeti plains, with predators concentrated in extraordinary numbers. This is one of the most spectacular wildlife events in East Africa and specific to January–February.

A common February combination: 5–7 days northern circuit safari (Tarangire + Serengeti Ndutu + Ngorongoro), then 4–5 days Zanzibar. The contrast between the bush and the coast is a significant part of the appeal of Tanzania as a destination — and February is one of the months where both sides are at their best simultaneously.

Safaris Tanzania handles both the safari and the Zanzibar logistics as a single package. See the 5-day safari and Zanzibar combo itinerary for a starting point, or WhatsApp Kassim at +255 786 110 786 to design a February itinerary around your dates and priorities. He will advise on which February camps in the Ndutu area are still available and what the flight connections between Arusha and Zanzibar look like for your window.

Practical Notes for February in Zanzibar

  • Sun protection is essential. The February sun is intense, particularly between 10 AM and 4 PM. High SPF, hat, and shade breaks are not optional for fair-skinned visitors.
  • Hydration. The combination of heat and humidity means fluid requirements are higher than most European visitors expect. Drink consistently throughout the day.
  • Mosquitoes. February is not the peak mosquito season in Zanzibar, but they are present. Zanzibar is a malaria zone. Continue your malaria prophylaxis from the mainland safari — do not stop it when you cross to the island.
  • Currency. USD is widely accepted alongside Tanzanian shillings. ATMs are available in Stone Town and most tourist areas. Cards are accepted at larger hotels.
  • Dress code in Stone Town. Zanzibar has a Muslim majority. Covering shoulders and knees when walking through Stone Town and villages is both respectful and reduces unwanted attention. Beach dress is appropriate at beach resorts.
