Chimpanzee Trek Tanzania — Gombe Stream

Tanzania has two main chimpanzee trekking destinations: Gombe Stream National Park (52 km², accessible from Kigoma) and Mahale Mountains National Park (1,650 km², more remote on Lake Tanganyika's western shore). Gombe is better for combining with a northern circuit safari due to its closer connection to Arusha. Mahale is for guests who want a more remote, expedition-style experience.

Tanzania National Parks regulations require a minimum distance of 10 metres from habituated chimpanzees. At Gombe, the troops are well-habituated and often move close to visitors naturally during their foraging. The experience is extraordinary — watching a mother groom her infant, a juvenile play wrestle, or a silverback rest beneath your observation point is nothing like seeing chimps in a sanctuary. These are wild animals in a wild forest.

Yes. Gombe is managed by Tanzania National Parks with trained rangers and guides on every trek. The chimps are habituated to human presence, which means they do not act aggressively toward visitors. The minimum distance rule protects both species from disease transmission — a real concern with any primate tourism. Your guide will brief you on protocols before you enter the forest.

Yes — this is the most common combination. Fly Kigoma to Arusha (about 3 hours with a Dar connection), then connect directly to your northern circuit safari: Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater. The transition from lakeside forest to savanna plains is one of Tanzania's most dramatic contrasts. We handle the logistics across both legs.

Chimpanzee trekking at Gombe is possible year-round, but the best time is during the dry season (May–October) when the chimps concentrate near the lake and are easier to track. During the wet season (November–April), the forest is lusher but the chimps range more widely, making treks longer. The experience is excellent either way — Gombe is never crowded, regardless of season.
