We saw 4 of the Big 5 in the first two days. Three nights in the Serengeti was the right call — by day 3 we understood the rhythms of the park in a way we never could have on a 2-night stop. Kassim was available on WhatsApp when our guide's vehicle had a tyre. Problem solved in 20 minutes.

Your journey

Day by Day

Arusha to Tarangire National Park
1

Arusha to Tarangire National Park

Pick up from Arusha. Drive south to Tarangire (2 hours). Afternoon game drive through the park's northern sector — the baobab zone where elephants gather in their hundreds along the Tarangire River. September and October bring 3,000+ elephants to this stretch of riverine woodland. Dinner at the lodge with views across the floodplain.

2

Tarangire to Lake Manyara National Park

Full morning in Tarangire. After breakfast drive north to Lake Manyara (1.5 hours). Manyara is compact but dense — tree-climbing lions, 400+ bird species, the alkaline lake flamingo flocks. Afternoon game drive. The lake reflects the Rift Valley escarpment in gold at sunset.

3

Lake Manyara to the Serengeti

Early morning drive along the Rift Valley escarpment and into the Ngorongoro highlands. Cross the Conservation Area boundary and descend into the Serengeti. First game drive en route to camp. The Serengeti opens suddenly — flat, endless, and full. Nothing prepares you for the first hour on these plains.

Full Day Serengeti — Seronera Valley

The Serengeti's Seronera Valley is the year-round centre of big cat activity. Morning drive to the granite koppies where lions den. Afternoon drive along the Seronera River — leopards in the fever trees above the banks, hippos in the pools, crocodiles. This is a day of sitting and waiting for the moment, with a guide who knows every tree.

Full Day Serengeti — Migration Patterns

Your third day in the Serengeti. Your guide will have tracked movement reports overnight. If the Great Migration is in the north (July–October), we drive to the Mara River crossing points — 800,000 wildebeest fording against crocodiles. If it is calving season (January–February), we head south to the Ndutu plains. If it is neither, the Serengeti still has more wildlife per square kilometre than anywhere on earth.

6

Serengeti to Ngorongoro Crater Rim

One final morning game drive in the Serengeti before departing east. Drive to Ngorongoro Conservation Area (3 hours). Arrive at the crater rim at 2,300 metres — the air is cooler here. Sundowner views from the rim across the caldera. Dinner in the lodge with crater views.

Ngorongoro Crater Descent and Return
7

Ngorongoro Crater Descent and Return

Descend at dawn into the 19km-wide crater. All Big Five are permanent residents of the crater floor, including approximately 30 endangered black rhino — the most reliable rhino sighting in East Africa. Full morning on the floor. After lunch, drive back to Arusha (3.5 hours). Airport or hotel drop-off.
