Logistics
Kilimanjaro First or Safari First?
01
Kilimanjaro First
RecommendedOur recommended sequence for most travellers. Climb while your legs are fresh and your mind is sharp. The safari that follows becomes a well-earned recovery — incredible wildlife from a comfortable vehicle while your body recovers. Most clients describe the transition from mountain silence to Serengeti abundance as one of the best moments of the trip.
02
Safari First
Works well if you want to finish on the high of the summit. The safari serves as acclimatisation to Tanzania — adjusting to the time zone, seeing the landscape, building anticipation. The risk: if the summit attempt fails, you end the trip on a low. Good option for experienced climbers who know they will summit.

"Two things I will never forget"
"I was worried about transitioning from the mountain to the safari mentally. The day's drive from Arusha to the Serengeti was perfect — it gave us time to decompress and shift gears. Then the Serengeti floored us completely. Kassim understood both experiences and made them flow. I will never forget reaching Uhuru Peak at dawn, or the lion pride we found on day one of the safari."

Common questions
Kilimanjaro + Safari FAQ
How much time do I need for both Kilimanjaro and a safari?
Minimum 10–11 days. This allows a 5-day Marangu climb (plus arrival day), a rest day in Arusha, and a 3–4 day safari. For the Machame route (higher success rate), plan 14–15 days total. We do not recommend rushing either experience — doing both in under 10 days compromises summit success and shortchanges the safari.
What is the success rate for summiting Kilimanjaro?
On the Machame route (7 days), our summit success rate is approximately 90%. On the Marangu route (5 days), it is around 65–70%. The main factor is acclimatisation time — longer routes give your body more time to adjust to altitude. We never rush groups or cut corners on the mountain.
Do I need to be very fit to do the combo?
For the safari portion, no special fitness is required. For Kilimanjaro, you need good cardiovascular fitness — the ability to hike 6–8 hours per day for multiple consecutive days at altitude. You do not need mountaineering experience. Slow, steady hiking pace is more important than athletic fitness. We recommend training with 4–6 weeks of regular hiking with a loaded pack before your trip.
Is it expensive to do both Kilimanjaro and a safari?
Our 8-day combo starts from $2,184 per person (based on 2 people). This includes Kilimanjaro park fees ($364), mountain crew wages, all meals and accommodation on the mountain, and a 3-day safari. Booking both with the same operator eliminates the 20–30% agency markup and the coordination cost of juggling two separate companies.
What is the total cost to climb Kilimanjaro and safari?
The combo price of $2,184 per person covers park fees, guides, porters, meals, and accommodation on the mountain plus the safari vehicle, park fees, lodges, and a driver-guide. Extras to budget: international flights, Tanzania visa ($50–$100), tips for mountain crew ($150–$250), travel insurance, and personal gear. For the full cost breakdown by package, see our totale kosten Kilimanjaro beklimmen guide.
Can you book Kilimanjaro and a safari with the same operator?
Yes — Safaris Tanzania handles both. We have been operating Kilimanjaro climbs and northern circuit safaris since 1978. You deal with one point of contact, one payment, one logistics chain. Kassim coordinates both experiences personally. No handoffs between agencies.
What happens if I don't summit? Does the safari still happen?
Yes, the safari continues regardless of summit outcome. If you turn back before Uhuru Peak due to altitude sickness or other factors, you descend with your guide, rest in Arusha, and begin the safari as planned. The mountain and safari bookings are fully independent in terms of execution — the only connection is the operator.
What gear do I need for Kilimanjaro that I don't need for a safari?
Key Kilimanjaro gear: warm and waterproof layers (summit temperatures can reach -20°C), hiking boots (ankle support, broken in), trekking poles, a head torch, and a sleeping bag rated to -10°C minimum. We provide a detailed packing list once you book. For the safari, lightweight clothing in neutral colours is ideal — no specialist gear required.
