Tanzania national park
Mikumi National Park
Tanzania's most accessible southern park. Open plains, big herds, wild dogs — 4 hours from Dar es Salaam.
From $1,400/person · Private safari, no brokers
Mikumi National Park covers 3,230 square kilometres along the Mkata Floodplain, an expanse of open savanna that draws frequent comparisons to the Serengeti. The park sits astride the main highway between Dar es Salaam and Iringa, making it the easiest southern circuit park to reach — approximately four hours by road from Tanzania's commercial capital.
That road access is Mikumi's defining advantage. While the northern circuit parks require either a flight or a full day's drive from Arusha, Mikumi puts Tanzania's wildlife within easy reach of Dar es Salaam. For visitors who cannot commit to a longer northern circuit itinerary, or for families based in Dar, Mikumi delivers a genuine safari experience without the logistics burden.
The wildlife is substantial. The Mkata Floodplain attracts large herds of buffalo and elephant during the dry season, while resident lion prides are regularly seen on the open grassland. Mikumi has earned a reputation as one of Tanzania's more reliable parks for African wild dog sightings — a species that is endangered across the continent and notoriously difficult to spot. Over 400 bird species have been recorded, including migratory species during the wet season.
Mikumi also stands apart in how it connects Tanzania's safari story. It shares an unfenced border with the vast Selous ecosystem to the south, allowing wildlife to move freely across an area of many thousands of square kilometres. This continuity of habitat is one of the things that makes the southern circuit ecologically distinct from the north — and it is what allows species like wild dogs and elephants to persist here in strong numbers.
From the field
“Mikumi surprises people. They arrive expecting a lesser experience because it's closer to Dar, and they leave having seen more lion prides in three days than they expected in a week. The floodplain is extraordinarily productive, and because it's not on the standard northern circuit route, we often have entire sections of it to ourselves.”
Why Visit Mikumi National Park
Highlights
Best Time to Visit Mikumi National Park
June to October is the dry season peak when wildlife concentrates on the floodplain and game viewing is most productive. Animals gather around the remaining water sources, making the Mkata Floodplain an extraordinary theatre of large mammal behaviour. November to March is the wet season — the park is still visitable, roads remain passable, and birdwatching is exceptional with migratory species present. April and May see the heaviest rains but even then the park remains accessible.
Insider Tip
Ask your guide to check the hippo pool on the Mkata River at dusk — the males display and call at the water's edge as the sun drops, and it is one of Mikumi's most dramatic wildlife spectacles. Because most visitors do afternoon game drives and leave, the pool is often completely quiet by 5 PM.

From Arusha, the drive is 6–7 hours. Safaris Tanzania arranges all logistics.
