What is it?

The world's largest intact caldera

Ngorongoro is not a game reserve or a national park in the conventional sense. It is a conservation area built around a volcanic caldera — a collapsed volcano — that formed approximately 2 to 3 million years ago. The resulting depression is 260 square kilometres at the floor, surrounded by walls that rise 600 metres above it. The walls create a microclimate, a contained ecosystem, and a natural enclosure that most animals rarely leave.

Inside the crater: grassland, a seasonal lake (Lake Magadi), a freshwater lake (Lake Makat), the Lerai Forest, and the Munge Stream. The crater floor supports permanent populations of lion, spotted hyena, elephant, Cape buffalo, hippopotamus, flamingo, cheetah, black rhino, and wildebeest — along with over 500 recorded bird species. The diversity within 260 square kilometres is extraordinary.

The crater is part of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority (NCAA) jurisdiction. Entry and descent fees are separate, and the total cost — for a vehicle doing a single day descent — can reach $416–$520+ per group including park conservation fees and the vehicle descent charge. Safaris Tanzania includes all fees transparently in every quote.

The Maasai people have lived in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area for centuries. Unlike most Tanzania national parks where human settlement is prohibited, Maasai pastoralists coexist with wildlife in the NCA, grazing their cattle on the crater rim and in the surrounding highlands. This coexistence is visible throughout the conservation area and is a significant part of the landscape's character.

What you will see

Wildlife on the Crater Floor

Black Rhino

~30 residents

Most reliable black rhino viewing in Africa. Coordinate with ranger intel on morning of descent. Best in dry season (June–Oct) when vegetation is low.

Lion

60–70 residents

Multiple resident prides. Kills in open daylight are common. Lions are habituated to vehicles and frequently observed at close range hunting or resting.

Spotted Hyena

400+ residents

The crater has the highest hyena density in the world. Hyena clans patrol the crater floor at dawn and dusk and are frequently seen making or stealing kills.

Elephant

Large bulls + herds

Mostly large bulls in the crater, with family herds descending seasonally. The Lerai Forest is the primary elephant habitat inside the caldera.

Cape Buffalo

4,000–6,000

Enormous herds on the open grassland. Buffalo provide prey for the lion prides and are the most numerous large herbivore on the crater floor.

Hippo

50–80

Hippo pool near the Munge Stream is a reliable sighting on every crater descent. Late afternoon light over the hippo pool is exceptional for photography.

Flamingo

Seasonal, thousands

Lesser flamingos feed on Lake Magadi's algae. Numbers peak after the short rains (November–December) when lake levels rise. Can turn large sections of the lake pink.

Cheetah

Variable

Small resident population hunts on the open grassland east of Lake Magadi. Sightings are reliable in dry season but not guaranteed.

Practical Information

Fees and Costs

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area charges multiple fees: a conservation area fee ($73/person/day), a vehicle descent fee (~$208/vehicle), and a camping or accommodation fee if staying overnight on the rim. Total fees for a vehicle with 4 passengers doing a single crater descent exceed $499. Any quote that seems low should be checked against these fee structures — they are non-negotiable government charges that every honest operator includes in their pricing.

Descent Timing

Vehicles may descend at 6am, 9am, or 12pm. The 6am descent is strongly recommended. You arrive on the crater floor before most other vehicles, the light is golden and low for photography, and predators are most active in the cool morning hours. By 9am, the crater can have 40–60 vehicles. By midday, the heat and vehicle density make the experience markedly different from the early morning.

Time on the Crater Floor

All vehicles must exit by 6pm. A 6am descent gives you approximately 11 hours on the crater floor — enough time for a thorough circuit including the hippo pool, Lake Magadi flamingos, the Lerai Forest elephants, and extended time at predator sightings. Your guide will plan the route based on current ranger intelligence on rhino and lion locations.

Altitude

The crater rim sits at 2,300m. Some travellers experience mild altitude symptoms (headache, fatigue) on arrival. Drink water, rest the evening before your crater descent, and avoid alcohol the night before. The crater floor is at 1,700m — the descent itself provides some relief.

Accommodation

Crater rim lodges range from luxury (Ngorongoro Crater Lodge, $832–$1,560/night) to mid-range (Ngorongoro Wildlife Lodge, $208–$364/night) to budget camps on the rim. Safaris Tanzania works with a range of rim properties at different price points and can include accommodation to match your budget. The view into the caldera from rim lodges is extraordinary at sunrise and sunset.
