Tarangire National Park

Tarangire Game Drive:
What to See and Expect

The most underrated park in the northern circuit. Higher elephant density than the Serengeti. Ancient baobab forests. Over 550 bird species. Most itineraries give it one day — that is not enough.

The honest pitch

Why Tarangire deserves more than one day

Most Tanzania itineraries treat Tarangire as a day stop between Arusha and the Serengeti. The standard circuit picks you up at your Arusha hotel, drives 120 kilometres south to the Tarangire gate, runs one full-day game drive, then continues to Lake Manyara or overnight accommodation near Ngorongoro. Tarangire gets 8 hours and a tick in the itinerary box.

That is a shame. Tarangire National Park covers 2,850 square kilometres of wilderness along the Tarangire River — a permanent water source that draws extraordinary concentrations of wildlife during the dry season (July–October), when over 3,000 elephants converge on the river valley. During peak dry season, game density in Tarangire rivals the Serengeti for sheer numbers of large mammals, but with a fraction of the vehicles.

Beyond the elephants: Tarangire has one of the highest bird species counts of any park in Tanzania (550+), making it the destination of choice for serious birders. The swamp areas harbour ground hornbills, yellow-collared lovebirds, and the ashy starling found almost nowhere else. The baobab forests in the south of the park are among the most ancient in East Africa — some trees are estimated at over 1,000 years old. And Tarangire has a resident population of tree-climbing lions, a behaviour documented here more reliably than almost anywhere else in Africa.

Safaris Tanzania guides routinely recommend two nights in Tarangire for clients who want to experience the park properly. One game drive shows you what is there. Two days lets you go deep.

What You Will See on a Tarangire Game Drive

African Elephant

Guaranteed dry season

Tanzania's highest elephant density outside Amboseli. Herds of 50–200 animals at the river. Bull elephants with enormous tusks — increasingly rare across Africa — are resident in the park. Calves, juveniles, and full bull displays are common encounters.

Lion

Year-round, tree-climbing in some areas

Tarangire's lions are famous for tree-climbing behaviour, most commonly observed around the Silale Swamp. The park has healthy resident prides. Your guide will know which trees the local groups prefer and position you for the best sighting.

Leopard

Year-round, nocturnal — dawn drives best

Resident throughout the park. Leopards in Tarangire are less habituated than in the Serengeti and sightings are earned rather than guaranteed, but the baobab terrain offers extraordinary photographic backgrounds when you do find one.

African Wild Dog

Resident pack, sightings unpredictable

Tarangire has one of the few resident wild dog packs in northern Tanzania. Sightings require local knowledge and timing. Kassim's team tracks pack movements and positions clients when the pack is active.

Giraffe, Buffalo, Zebra

Guaranteed year-round

Maasai giraffe are abundant and easy to photograph against the baobab backdrop. Large buffalo herds use the river corridor. Plains zebra are present year-round, with massive concentrations during the wet season when the park floods.

Birds (550+ species)

Best October–April for migrants

Ground hornbills, secretarybird, lilac-breasted roller, and 30+ raptor species. The swamps host saddle-billed stork, yellow-billed stork, and sacred ibis. Safaris Tanzania guide Juma Hassan holds a certified birding qualification specifically for Tarangire.

Season guide

Best Time for a Tarangire Game Drive

July – October: Dry Season (Recommended)

This is the peak game viewing period in Tarangire. The Tarangire River is the only permanent water source within hundreds of kilometres, which means every animal in the ecosystem comes to it. Elephant concentrations at the river in August and September are among the largest gatherings of elephants anywhere on the continent. Lion prides follow. The swamps fill with wading birds and hippos. Predator-prey interactions happen almost daily.

The tradeoff: dust, heat, and the arrival of other safari vehicles — though Tarangire remains significantly less crowded than the Serengeti during the same period. Roads are dry and all areas of the park are accessible. This is the easiest time to guarantee exceptional game viewing.

November – April: Green Season

The short and long rains transform Tarangire into a different park entirely. The swamps expand, flooding sections of the south. Migratory birds arrive from Europe and Asia, swelling the species count dramatically. Wildebeest and zebra disperse across the plains in enormous wet-season herds that rival anything in the Serengeti in terms of sheer numbers, though spread across a larger area.

Wildlife viewing requires more effort during the green season — animals are dispersed rather than concentrated at the river. But the landscape is extraordinary, the photography conditions are exceptional, and the park is virtually empty. Accommodation rates drop 25–35%. For birders, January–April is the single best period in the park.

May – June: Transition Season

May is the tail end of the long rains and June the beginning of the dry season. June in particular is underrated — the landscape is still green, animals begin concentrating at the river, crowds are minimal, and prices are moderate. Safaris Tanzania frequently recommends June as the best value month in Tarangire for experienced safari travellers who want density without peak-season prices and vehicles.

Practical guide

Planning Your Tarangire Game Drive

How long does a Tarangire game drive take?

A full-day game drive runs 06:30–18:00, covering approximately 120km of park circuits. The Tarangire River valley, Silale Swamp, and southern baobab areas require separate circuits. One day covers the highlights; two days covers the park properly.

Getting there from Arusha

Tarangire gate is 120km from Arusha — approximately 90 minutes on tarmac and dirt road. Safaris Tanzania collects from Arusha hotels from 06:00 for an early game drive start. There is also a small airstrip inside the park (Kuro) for flying safaris.

Park fees

Entry: $55.90 per person per day. Vehicle fee: approximately $42. Full fees are included in every Safaris Tanzania quote — we never add surprise charges at the gate.

Accommodation options

Safaris Tanzania uses camps and lodges inside and adjacent to Tarangire. Inside the park: tented camps with full board and private game drive access. Outside: lodges on the park boundary at lower cost. Kassim selects accommodation based on your budget and priorities.

Combining with other parks

Tarangire is almost always combined with Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti on the northern circuit. A typical 5-day itinerary: Day 1–2 Tarangire, Day 3 Ngorongoro, Day 4–5 Serengeti.

Birding-specific game drives

Safaris Tanzania guide Juma Hassan holds a certified birding guide qualification. For birding-focused clients, we structure game drives around the Silale Swamp and forest edges at dawn — when 80% of species activity occurs.
