1. Join a scheduled group departure. This is the most cost-effective approach. Group safaris run on fixed dates with fixed itineraries, and costs are shared. 2. Find a roommate. Some operators (including Safaris Tanzania) can match solo travellers of the same gender to share a vehicle and cut costs.

For most couples, we recommend a 6–8 day private safari hitting the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater. If budget allows, add 2–3 days at a luxury camp with a private deck overlooking a watering hole. The Serengeti in June–October or January–March offers the best wildlife density and romantic atmosphere.

For Families With Children

Children on safari is one of the great travel experiences — watching your kids see a lion for the first time is a memory that outlasts everything else. But safari with kids requires more planning than a standard itinerary.

Age matters more than you think. Most operators recommend a minimum age of 5–6 for game drives. Younger children struggle with the early morning starts, the long hours in a vehicle, and the heat. Some lodges have age restrictions on game drives for safety reasons.

Keep itineraries short. An ambitious 10-day circuit that works brilliantly for adults will exhaust children. Four to five days of safari is the sweet spot for families with kids aged 6–12. Build in rest days at a lodge with a pool.

Which parks work best: Lake Manyara is excellent for families — compact, varied habitats, tree-climbing lions, and a scenic drive through the groundwater forest. Photography-focused safaris prioritise vehicle type, guide expertise, location, and timing over general wildlife viewing. The standard safari circuit can produce stunning photographs, but serious wildlife photographers need specific conditions.

Vehicle type: Request a pop-top or open-sided safari vehicle. These give you an unobstructed 360-degree shooting angle — critical for action shots of lions or cheetahs. Standard closed 4x4s with pop-up roofs are functional but limiting for serious work.

Guide expertise: A guide who is also a naturalist and photographer understands where animals will be, how they behave, and how to position the vehicle for the best angle. This is different from a standard guide who simply drives you to wildlife.

Best locations: The Serengeti's Seronera Valley is exceptional for leopards (resting in sausage trees along the river) and cheetahs (hunting on the open plains).
