The Serengeti is synonymous with safari. Fifteen thousand square kilometres of golden grass, thorn trees, and river valleys hold Africa's most iconic wildlife — lions, leopards, elephants, buffalo, and the 1.5 million wildebeest of the Great Migration. It is the oldest and most intact ecosystem in East Africa, and the only place on earth where you can watch a river crossing that has been happening the same way, in the same places, for a million years.

From the field

Every crossing is different. Some mornings the wildebeest line up for an hour, not one jumps. Then suddenly one goes, and 10,000 follow. The crocs have been waiting since October. It is the most honest thing in nature.
