The classic route

What Is the Northern Circuit?

Short answer: the Northern Circuit is Tanzania's classic safari route linking Arusha, Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti. Most travellers book 4–10 days, with 7 days the best balance of wildlife time, cost and comfort.

You start in Arusha, drive west to Tarangire, north to Lake Manyara and Ngorongoro, then into the Serengeti. It can be a full loop, but many travellers now fly out of the Serengeti to avoid a long backtrack. See all current safari options on our Tanzania safari tours hub.

The geography matters. This isn't a scattered collection of parks — it's a continuous wildlife corridor. Elephants migrate between Tarangire and the Maasai Steppe. Wildebeest move from the Serengeti into the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Lions follow the herds. The entire system is connected, which is why the wildlife density is so high.

The road quality varies. Arusha to Tarangire is paved. Tarangire to Ngorongoro is rough gravel (2–3 hours of rattling). The Crater rim road is decent. Inside the parks, you're on dirt tracks. A 4x4 isn't optional; it's required by law inside the parks.

Why is this the most popular circuit in East Africa? Simple: it's where first-time travellers can reliably combine Big Five sightings, Migration timing, transparent lodge choices and strong road/flight logistics without wasting days in transit.

The five parks

The 5 Parks of the Northern Circuit

Arusha National Park

The circuit's forgotten gem — small, close to town, almost always skipped

Arusha National Park is the circuit's forgotten gem — small, close to town (45 minutes), and almost always skipped. Most itineraries ignore it entirely, which is a shame, because it's the best place to acclimatise after a long flight and one of the few parks where you can walk.

The park sits at the base of Mount Meru (4,566m), Tanzania's second-highest peak. The views are spectacular — when the clouds clear, you see Meru's volcanic cone on one side and Kilimanjaro on the other. The landscape is diverse: montane forest, open savanna, and the Ngurdoto Crater (a mini-Ngorongoro with no road access).

Wildlife here is different from the rest of the circuit. No lions or rhinos, but plenty of species you won't see elsewhere: black-and-white colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, bushbuck, and occasionally leopards in the forest.

The real draw is the walking safaris. This is one of the only Northern Circuit parks where you can leave the vehicle and walk with an armed ranger. You track colobus monkeys through the canopy and actually feel like you're in Africa. For a lighter overnight experience, see our guide to fly camping in Tanzania.

Park fees

$62 per person per day (24 hours). Vehicle fee: $47. Most safaris allocate half a day.

Tip

Best for acclimatisation. Pair with a Kilimanjaro climb or use as a half-day before your main safari starts.

Tarangire National Park

The elephant capital of Tanzania — herds of 300+

Tarangire is the elephant capital of Tanzania. Not "lots of elephants" — herds of 300+ elephants. During the dry season (June–October), Tarangire has the highest concentration of elephants in the country.

The reason is the Tarangire River. It's a permanent water source in a semi-arid landscape, so when the rains stop, every elephant within 100km migrates here. Along with them come buffalo (herds of 500+), wildebeest, zebra, giraffe, impala, and every predator that follows the herds.

The landscape is iconic: ancient baobab trees (some over 1,000 years old) scattered across golden savanna. The baobabs are photogenic, which is why Tarangire shows up in every Tanzania safari brochure.

Best time

June–October (dry season). How long: 1–2 days. Park fees: $62 per adult per day.

Insider tip

September–October peak for elephants. The Silale Swamp area in the north is excellent for bird species — over 550 recorded.

Lake Manyara National Park

Scenic but skippable on tight itineraries

Lake Manyara is small (330 sq km), scenic, and overrated. It's famous for tree-climbing lions — a behaviour seen in only two places in Africa (here and Queen Elizabeth NP in Uganda). The problem? The lions don't climb reliably.

The park is shaped like a strip: the Rift Valley escarpment on one side, the lake on the other, and a narrow band of forest and grassland in between. You can cover the entire park in 3–4 hours.

The scenery is excellent. The groundwater forest is lush and green year-round, home to blue monkeys, baboons, and occasionally elephants.

Our take

Lake Manyara doesn't add much that you won't see better in Tarangire or the Serengeti. If you're doing a 4-day express circuit, skip it and allocate the extra day to the Serengeti.

Ngorongoro Crater

Africa's most concentrated wildlife experience — 25,000+ large mammals

The Ngorongoro Crater is Africa's most concentrated wildlife experience. It's a 600-meter-deep volcanic caldera, 20 kilometres across, with a permanent population of 25,000+ large mammals. You drive down a steep track onto the crater floor, and within an hour, you've seen four of the Big Five.

The Big Five are all here. Lions (60–70 individuals) are easy to spot. Black rhinos (30–40 individuals) are concentrated near the Lerai Forest — this is the only place in Tanzania where you're likely to see rhino on a one-day visit. Elephants (mostly bulls) roam the forest and swamps.

The downside: crowds and costs. The Ngorongoro Conservation Area charges $73 per person per day (on top of standard park fees), plus a $307 vehicle fee per descent.

Fees

$73 per person per day + $307 vehicle fee per descent. Descend at 6:30am to avoid crowds.

Pro tip

By 9am when most lodges arrive, you'll have already seen the Big Five. First light descent is the key strategy.

Serengeti National Park

The crown jewel — 30,000 km² of savanna and the Great Migration

The Serengeti is the reason most people come to Tanzania. It's the crown jewel of the Northern Circuit: 30,000 square kilometres of savanna, home to the Great Migration (2 million wildebeest + 500,000 zebras + 200,000 gazelles), the highest lion density in Africa, and landscapes so cinematic they've been filmed for every major wildlife documentary of the last 50 years.

The park is massive, so most safaris focus on specific zones:

  • Southern Serengeti (Ndutu) — calving season, January–March
  • Central Serengeti (Seronera) — year-round resident wildlife, lions, leopards, cheetahs
  • Western Corridor (Grumeti) — Migration crossings, June–July
  • Northern Serengeti (Kogatende) — Mara River crossings, August–September

But here's the secret: the Serengeti is incredible even without the Migration. The Central Serengeti has 3,000+ lions. Leopards in every kopje. Cheetahs on the plains. The game drives are consistently excellent year-round.

How long

Minimum 2 full days, ideally 3–4 days. The park is too big to rush. Park fees: $73 per person per day.

Timing

When to Visit the Northern Circuit

Dry Season (Jun–Oct)

Peak Wildlife · Peak Prices

Wildlife viewing is spectacular — animals concentrate around permanent water sources. The Great Migration is in the Western Corridor and Northern Serengeti.

Downsides: Peak prices (often 30–50% higher at lodges) and crowds at Ngorongoro and Serengeti crossings.

Green Season (Mar–May)

Lush · Quieter · Best Value

The long rains transform the savanna. Wildebeest calving in the Southern Serengeti (Feb–Mar) attracts every predator. Many lodges discount by roughly 20–30%, making this the best-value season if you can accept short rain showers.

Downsides: Occasional rain showers. Some roads get muddy.

Shoulder Season (Nov–Dec)

The Value Window

Short rains arrive. The landscape greens up. Rates usually sit between low and peak season, with better availability than July–September. The Migration is moving south through Central and Southern Serengeti.

Our recommendation: Ideal for first-timers on a budget.

Know the difference

Northern Circuit vs Southern Circuit

Northern Circuit

  • Wildlife: Big Five guaranteed. Great Migration. Highest wildlife density in Africa.
  • Infrastructure: Paved roads to parks. Huge range of lodges. Daily flights from Arusha.
  • Crowds: High, especially Ngorongoro and Serengeti in peak season.
  • Best for: First-timers. Families. Anyone chasing the Great Migration.

Southern Circuit

  • Wildlife: Wild dogs. Elephants. Lions. Leopards. NO rhinos. No Migration.
  • Infrastructure: Rougher roads (7–10 hours from Dar) or fly in. Fewer lodges.
  • Crowds: Almost none. 0–2 other vehicles on game drives.
  • Best for: Repeat visitors. Anyone who prioritises wilderness over ticking the Big Five.

Do the Northern Circuit first. Once you've done that, come back for the Southern Circuit — or add a chimpanzee trek in Mahale Mountains to any Tanzania trip.

Common questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How many days do I need for a Northern Circuit safari?

Allow at least 4 days for Tarangire, Ngorongoro and the Serengeti. Seven days is the best first-safari length because it gives you two proper Serengeti game-drive days without rushing. Ten days lets you add remote Migration zones or a slower family pace.

How much does a Northern Circuit safari cost in 2026?

For a private mid-range Northern Circuit safari, plan roughly $1,850–$2,600 per person for 4 days, $3,300–$5,250 for 7 days, and $5,200–$7,500+ for 10 days. The biggest variables are season, lodge tier, group size and whether you fly out of the Serengeti.

Which parks are on the Northern Circuit?

The core route is Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti, with Arusha National Park as an easy first or final day. Most first-time travellers prioritise Tarangire, Ngorongoro and Serengeti if time is limited.

Can I do the Northern Circuit on my own, or do I need a guide?

You legally need a registered guide and a 4x4 vehicle to enter the parks. Self-drive safaris are possible, but they are rarely better value after vehicle rental, fuel, park fees, route planning and guide knowledge are included.

What's the best month to see the Great Migration?

The Migration moves year-round: January to March is calving in the southern Serengeti, June to July is the Western Corridor, August to September is the Mara River area, and October to November sees herds moving south through central Serengeti.

Is a Northern Circuit safari safe?

Yes. The route is Tanzania's most established safari corridor, with reliable park infrastructure, professional guides and clear emergency procedures. Safaris Tanzania has operated private Northern Circuit trips since 1978.

What should I pack for a Northern Circuit safari?

Bring neutral-coloured layers, long sleeves and trousers for insects and sun, a warm fleece for dawn drives, high-SPF sunscreen, binoculars and a camera. Crater-rim mornings can be cold even when midday is warm.

What's the difference between the Northern and Southern Circuit?

The Northern Circuit has the Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire, stronger first-safari wildlife density and better flight/lodge infrastructure. The Southern Circuit is quieter and wilder, but usually better for repeat visitors with more time.

What vehicle do I need for the Northern Circuit?

Use a purpose-built 4x4 safari vehicle with a pop-up roof. Park tracks are rough and weather can change quickly. Safaris Tanzania uses private Toyota Landcruiser-style vehicles, not minibuses or coach-style game-drive vehicles.

Can I combine Kilimanjaro with a Northern Circuit safari?

Yes. Many travellers climb Kilimanjaro first, then recover with a 3- to 5-day Northern Circuit safari from Arusha. The logistics are clean because both trips start in northern Tanzania.
