Tanzania national park
Nyerere National Park
Africa's largest national park. The Rufiji River. Wild dogs. And almost no other tourists.
From $1,400/person · Private safari, no brokers
Nyerere National Park — formerly known as the Selous Game Reserve — is the largest national park in Africa. At 22,000 km², it is larger than Switzerland. The northern section, designated as Nyerere National Park in 2019 in honour of Tanzania's founding president Julius Nyerere, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the last true wilderness areas on the continent.
The park's defining feature is the Rufiji River, which drains an enormous catchment across southern Tanzania before meeting the Indian Ocean. The river creates a labyrinth of channels, lakes, and flood plains that are best explored by boat — an experience unavailable in any of Tanzania's northern circuit parks. Hippos, crocodiles, and hundreds of bird species populate the channels. Elephant and buffalo wade across the shallows. The wildlife viewing from a boat on the Rufiji is categorically different from anything you experience from a vehicle in the Serengeti.
Nyerere's other distinction is its wild dog population. The park holds one of the largest African wild dog packs on the continent. Wild dogs are critically endangered — fewer than 6,000 remain in Africa — and seeing a pack hunt is one of the rarest and most extraordinary wildlife experiences available. Nyerere offers a realistic chance.
For most travellers, Nyerere is a second Tanzania trip — after the northern circuit has been done. For those willing to skip the crowds entirely, it works beautifully as a first trip: less dramatic in the iconic way, more raw, more truly wild.
From the field
“When you see 30 wild dogs take down a waterbuck from a boat on the Rufiji, moving silently with no engine noise and no other vehicles — that is when you understand what African wilderness used to feel like everywhere. Nyerere protects that.”
Why Visit Nyerere National Park
Highlights
Best Time to Visit Nyerere National Park
June to October is ideal — the Rufiji River is at its most concentrated and the boat safaris are at their best. Wildlife congregates at the water and the vegetation is lower, giving clearer sightlines. Nyerere is less extreme than the northern circuit in the rains — the park does stay open — but tracks in the park interior can flood and some camps temporarily close in April–May.
Insider Tip
Book an evening boat safari specifically — not the standard morning drive. The Rufiji at dusk, with hippos surfacing and African fish eagles calling across the water, is something you cannot experience in any northern circuit park. It requires an additional night, but it is worth it.
Getting to Nyerere National Park
Logistics
Nyerere is accessed from Dar es Salaam, approximately 250 km north of the park's main camps. Coastal Aviation, Auric Air, and Tropical Air operate scheduled charter services from Dar es Salaam Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR) to several airstrips within the park (30–45 minutes). The road from Dar to the park gate takes 4–5 hours by 4x4. Safaris Tanzania coordinates all transfers and can combine Nyerere with a Ruaha extension for a complete southern circuit.
