Tanzania national park
Lake Manyara National Park
Tree-climbing lions. Flamingo-pink shores. A diverse ecosystem compressed into 330 km².
From $1,400/person · Private safari, no brokers
Lake Manyara is Tanzania's most compact park — 330 km², of which two-thirds is the alkaline lake. What it lacks in size it compensates with density. The park contains five distinct ecosystems within a few kilometres: the groundwater forest at the escarpment base, acacia woodland, the floodplain, the lake shore, and the open grasslands.
Manyara is famous for two things: its tree-climbing lions (a unique behaviour linked to the specific acacia species and the need to escape tsetse flies and buffalo) and its birdlife. Over 400 species have been recorded, including up to 75,000 flamingos on the lake shore in season.
Safaris Tanzania typically uses Manyara as a half-day en route between Tarangire and the Serengeti, or as a dedicated birding stop. A full day here rewards the patient observer.
From the field
“People say Manyara is just a transit stop. I say spend one morning here properly and you will understand why Hemingway called it the most beautiful lake in Africa. The groundwater forest alone takes an hour to absorb.”
Why Visit Lake Manyara National Park
Highlights
Best Time to Visit Lake Manyara National Park
Flamingos peak during the wet season (November–April) when the lake levels are right. Tree-climbing lions are seen year-round but best in the dry season when they climb higher to escape the tsetse flies. June–October for game viewing. November–April for birds.
Insider Tip
Request the groundwater forest section first thing in the morning — the baboon troops and forest elephants are most active before 9am, before the tour vehicle traffic arrives from Arusha day trips.
