Common Safari Questions

How much does a Tanzania safari cost?+
A Tanzania safari costs from $832/person for a budget 4-day Tanzania Parks circuit to $3,640/person for a luxury 10-day northern circuit. Most travellers spend $1,456–$2,288/person for a 5–7 day safari. Key cost drivers are: number of days, accommodation tier, park fees (which are fixed by TANAPA), and whether you book direct or through a broker.
What is the best time to go on a Tanzania safari?+
Depends on your priorities. Peak season (July–October) offers the most reliable wildlife and the famous Mara River crossings. Green season (April–May) is cheapest with fewest crowds. January–February combines the Serengeti calving season with moderate prices. For a first safari, July–September gives the most reliable overall experience.
Do I need a visa for Tanzania?+
Most nationalities need a visa for Tanzania. A tourist visa costs $52–$104 (US citizens pay $104, UK/Europe $52) and can be obtained on arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport or Dar es Salaam Airport. You need a passport valid for 6 months beyond your entry date and at least one blank page. For Kenya/Tanzania combined trips, check whether you need single or multiple entries.
Is Tanzania safe for tourists?+
Yes — Tanzania is one of the safer safari destinations in Africa. Violent crime against tourists is rare. The main safety considerations are: road safety (long drives on rough roads), malaria in coastal areas (consult your doctor about prophylaxis), and general travel precautions. In national parks, always follow your guide's instructions, particularly around large animals.
How do I get to Tanzania?+
International flights go to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO, near Arusha) or Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam (DAR). Kilimanjaro Airport is the main entry point for northern circuit safaris — it is a 1–1.5 hour drive to Arusha, the safari hub. Direct flights from Europe: KLM to JRO, Turkish Airlines to DAR. From the US: via Dubai, Addis Ababa, or Johannesburg.
What should I pack for a Tanzania safari?+
Essential items: neutral-coloured clothing (khaki, brown, green — avoid white and dark colours), comfortable walking shoes, a light rain jacket, sunscreen, insect repellent, binoculars, and a good camera. For a full packing list with specific brands and tips, see our Safari Packing List guide. Safari vehicles are dusty — bring a bandana or buff and lens cleaning cloths.
