August is peak season at Ngorongoro Crater. The long dry season is at its most pronounced — no rain, wildlife concentrated on the crater floor at maximum density, and visibility across the caldera at its clearest. It coincides with the wildebeest migration river crossings in the northern Serengeti, making August one of the most requested months for Tanzania safaris. It is also the most expensive and one of the most crowded. See our 7-day Serengeti and Ngorongoro safari which combines both.
Here is what to genuinely expect.

Weather in August
August is the warmest month in Tanzania, though Ngorongoro Crater's altitude keeps the rim cool. On the crater floor, midday temperatures reach 24 to 28 degrees — warm by safari standards. Mornings at the rim are cold: 10 to 14 degrees at 6am, dropping to 8 to 12 degrees in the first half of the month before the seasonal shift begins. A fleece is essential for the early descent regardless of how warm the afternoon feels.
No rain. Zero. The long dry season runs from June through October, and August sits right in its middle. The crater floor is brown-gold, vegetation is at its shortest, and game viewing conditions are optimal — animals are not spread out looking for water or fresh grazing. The skies are clear, the light is strong, and visibility across the 20km caldera floor is exceptional.
Wildlife in August
See our full Ngorongoro Crater safari guide for detailed wildlife information across all seasons.
August delivers the same exceptional wildlife viewing as July. The structural reasons are identical: dry season water concentration drives herds to the lake and rivers, predators follow the prey, and the short vegetation makes everything visible from the vehicle.
- Lions — The crater's 60 to 70 lions are most visible in the early morning when they use the open grassland near Lake Magadi. August is a reliable month for lion sightings, including the large males that hold territory near the Ngoitokitok springs.
- Black rhino — August remains one of the best months for black rhino in Ngorongoro. The low vegetation in the Lerai Forest and the open seasonal marshes gives clear sightlines. The approximately 30 black rhino in the crater move between water and shade on predictable routes.
- Elephants — Large bull elephants use the Lerai Forest as a corridor between the rim and the crater floor. August elephant activity is consistent — sightings are reliable mid-morning as the heat builds and the bulls move toward water.
- Hippos — The hippo pool at Ngoitokitok is densely populated. August is a reliable month for close-up hippo observation from the designated viewing area. The pool shrinks further through August as the dry season progresses.
- Flamingos — Lake Magadi's flamingo population is lower in August than in the wet season months, but wading bird activity around the lake remains active and photogenic. The pink concentration is thinner than November but still visible across the soda lake's shallows.
- Cheetahs — The eastern crater plains are open cheetah habitat. August sightings follow the dry-season pattern — reliable visibility in the low grass, hunting behaviour observable from a distance.
Crowds in August
August is as crowded as July — the park authority enforces the same vehicle limits on the crater floor, and the 6am descent slot remains the most sought-after. By 8am, the majority of vehicles have descended. By 9am, the crater is at or near capacity at popular sighting locations.
The strategy for August is identical to July: depart at 6am, be among the first on the floor, and position for wildlife before the volume of vehicles makes sightings feel shared. The guides who have worked Ngorongoro in August for years will tell you the 6am slot consistently produces the best experiences.
Accommodation in August
Book 6 to 9 months ahead for crater-rim lodges with caldera views. August is peak season — the lodges with direct views of the crater floor are fully booked well in advance. Budget accommodation on the rim has more availability but the experience is significantly different.
Crater floor camping is available for August departures — specific permits are required and Safaris Tanzania handles the arrangement. Spending the night inside the caldera and beginning the morning game drive without a descent is an experience that guests consistently describe as the highlight of their safari.
Combining August Ngorongoro with the Serengeti
August is peak month for the wildebeest migration in the northern Serengeti — the dramatic Mara River crossings happen primarily in July and August, with August often providing the most reliable crossing dates. Most August itineraries combine Ngorongoro with the northern Serengeti for exactly this reason: the crater for Big Five concentration, the northern Serengeti for the migration spectacle. See our 7-day Serengeti and Ngorongoro safari which covers exactly this combination.
The standard 7-day northern circuit for August: Tarangire (2 nights), Ngorongoro Crater (1 night rim, 1 full crater day), and northern Serengeti (3 nights for crossing access). This is the most requested August itinerary from Safaris Tanzania. The combination of the world's largest migration crossing and the world's largest intact volcanic caldera in a single week is one of Tanzania's most compelling safari sequences.
