Tanzania Safari in October
October is one of the most underrated months for a Tanzania safari. The peak season crowds have gone. The wildlife has not.
October overview
What October looks like in Tanzania
October sits in the transition between Tanzania's peak dry season (June–September) and the short rains (November). The parks are still dry — roads are good, vegetation is low, animals are concentrated near water sources. But the crowds that fill the Serengeti in August and September have thinned substantially. A Mara River sighting in October will have far fewer vehicles than the same sighting in August.
October is what experienced safari travellers call the "shoulder season" — the sweet spot between the crowds and cost of peak season and the wet landscapes of the green season. You get full wildlife activity at lower prices with fewer vehicles at sightings. It is the month Kassim recommends most often to clients who are flexible on timing and prioritise the experience over a specific spectacle like the river crossings.
The migration is in transition in October. The main Mara River crossings typically conclude by late September or early October, as the herds begin their southward return. Depending on rainfall timing, you may still catch late crossings in the first two weeks of October in the northern Serengeti, or find the herds already moving back through the central Serengeti toward the south. Safaris Tanzania monitors movement weekly and positions clients accordingly.
Across the rest of the northern circuit, October is reliably excellent. Ngorongoro Crater is at its best — dry, accessible, with resident wildlife fully concentrated on the crater floor. Tarangire is outstanding, with massive elephant gatherings at the Tarangire River as water elsewhere has dried up. The river becomes the single water source for thousands of animals, creating dense, extraordinary game viewing all day long.

October Wildlife by Park
Serengeti
ExcellentLate crossings possible in the north through early October. Central Serengeti has resident lions, leopards, and cheetahs year-round. Herds returning south through the month. Fewer vehicles than August.
Ngorongoro Crater
OutstandingDry season conditions on the crater floor. Black rhino more visible in lower vegetation. Flamingos beginning to return to Lake Magadi. Full Big Five. Descent is straightforward — roads dry and firm.
Tarangire
ExceptionalOne of the best months in Tarangire. The Tarangire River is the last water in the region. Elephant herds of 200–300 animals congregate at the riverbank. Lion prides follow them. Outstanding photography.
Lake Manyara
Very goodTree-climbing lions still active. Flamingos on the lake. Dense forest wildlife. Good complement to a Tarangire and Ngorongoro circuit.

October conditions and what to expect
Weather
October is warm and dry at the start, transitioning to the first light rains of the short rainy season toward the end of the month. In most years, the rains do not arrive until late October or November, and when they do begin, they are typically short afternoon showers rather than the prolonged downpours of the long rains in April and May.
Temperatures in the Serengeti in October: daytime highs of 28–31°C, mornings (game drive start) around 18–22°C. Ngorongoro Crater rim is significantly cooler — the altitude of 2,300m means early morning temperatures can be 10–14°C. A fleece layer is essential for crater departures before sunrise.
Crowds and Pricing
October occupies a genuine sweet spot. Peak season rates (July–September) are usually 20–30% higher than October rates at the same camps. The most dramatic drop happens at northern Serengeti camps, which charge premiums during crossing season and return to standard rates once the crossings wind down in October.
A 7-day private safari covering Tarangire, Ngorongoro, and the Serengeti in October starts from approximately $1,768–$2,288 per person with Safaris Tanzania, depending on accommodation choice. The same circuit in August runs $2,288–$2,912 per person at comparable camps. October offers near-peak wildlife at off-peak prices.
Availability in October is generally good — you can often book 4–8 weeks out without issues, unlike July and August where 6–12 months advance booking is advisable for the best camps.
The Migration in October
The Great Migration spends October in transition. Through most of September, the million-plus wildebeest and zebra are in the northern Serengeti at the Mara River. By late September and early October, the animals begin responding to rain signals from the south — the first short rains in the Ndutu area draw them back toward the calving grounds they left in April.
This means October can offer two different migration experiences depending on your timing. An early October trip (first two weeks) may still catch the tail end of northern Serengeti activity. A mid or late October trip will find the herds moving south through the central Serengeti — not the dramatic crossing spectacle of August, but the extraordinary sight of a million animals in motion across the plains.
Kassim's advice for October migration: if you specifically want river crossings, go in August or early September. If you want to see the sheer scale of the migration on the move, October can be equally memorable — and you will be watching from a vehicle that has the sighting largely to itself.
Recommended October Itinerary
For a 7-day October safari, Safaris Tanzania recommends: 2 nights in Tarangire (exceptional timing for the Tarangire River elephant gatherings), 1 day Ngorongoro Crater, 3 nights Serengeti (positioned in the central or north depending on migration reports). This gives you the best of Tarangire's peak season, Ngorongoro year-round excellence, and Serengeti at reduced prices with full wildlife activity.
