Tanzania safari packages range from 3 days to 3 weeks. The right length depends on what you want to see, your budget, and how much time you have. In this guide, I will walk you through every package option — what is included, what it costs, and who it suits best. See our full range of safari packages for live pricing.

I have been pricing and designing safari itineraries for Safaris Tanzania since our founding in 1978. Every package here reflects what we actually run on the ground — not a brochure designed to sell the most expensive option.

The key thing to understand: when you book direct with us, you get the operator price. No broker has taken 20–30% off the top before a single dollar reaches the people actually running your safari.

A Tanzania safari is not a standardised product — the package you choose shapes the experience fundamentally. Here is what each itinerary option actually delivers.

Tanzania Safari Package Categories

3-Day Tanzania Safari Packages

Best for: Travellers short on time, or those combining Tanzania with a Zanzibar beach stay who want a quick wildlife hit.

Typical route: Arusha → Ngorongoro Crater → Tarangire → Arusha (or reverse).

What you see: The Ngorongoro Crater floor (dense wildlife, often leopard and rhino) and Tarangire (elephant herds, baobabs). You miss the Serengeti, which requires at least 2 days inside the park to be worthwhile.

Price (direct with Safaris Tanzania): From $676/person (budget lodge, group drive) to $988/person (mid-range, small group).

What is included: 2 nights accommodation, all meals, park fees, game drives, guide, vehicle, and road transfers from Arusha.

What is not included: International flights, tips, travel insurance, Zanzibar connection.

Baobab trees in Tarangire National Park — ancient trees that can live for 1,000 years and dominate the Tarangire landscape
Tarangire's ancient baobabs — the iconic trees that make Tarangire one of Africa's most distinctive parks, included in virtually every northern circuit safari.

4-Day Tanzania Safari Packages

Best for: Travellers who want Serengeti access without committing to a full week.

Typical route: Arusha → Tarangire → Serengeti (2 nights) → Ngorongoro → Arusha.

What you see: A taste of the Serengeti (ideally at least 1.5 days of game drives), the Ngorongoro Crater, and Tarangire. Four days is the minimum for a meaningful Serengeti visit — anything less and you spend too much time driving.

Price (direct with Safaris Tanzania): From $936/person (budget) to $1,404/person (mid-range).

5-Day Tanzania Safari Packages — The Most Popular

Best for: First-timers, families, couples. This is our most booked package length.

Typical route: Arusha → Tarangire → Serengeti (2 nights) → Ngorongoro Crater → Arusha.

What you see: The full northern circuit. Two full days in the Serengeti gives you time for the Migration (if visiting July–October) or the resident wildlife year-round. The Ngorongoro Crater delivers the highest wildlife density — a half-day on the crater floor often rivals two full days elsewhere.

Price (direct with Safaris Tanzania): From $1,144/person (budget lodge, group) to $1,716/person (mid-range, small group). See the full 5-day northern circuit itinerary with day-by-day details.

Example day-by-day:

  • Day 1: Arusha → Tarangire. Afternoon game drive. Overnight Tarangire lodge/camp.
  • Day 2: Morning game drive Tarangire → drive to Central Serengeti. Afternoon game drive on arrival. Overnight Serengeti.
  • Day 3: Full day Serengeti game drive (Migration area July–Oct; resident wildlife year-round). Overnight Serengeti.
  • Day 4: Morning game drive Serengeti → Ngorongoro Crater. Afternoon game drive crater floor. Overnight Ngorongoro rim.
  • Day 5: Morning game drive Ngorongoro (crater floor) → drive back to Arusha. Drop-off at airport or hotel.

The Serengeti in the dry season — this is what a 5-day northern circuit delivers: two full days inside Tanzania's most iconic park.

7-Day Tanzania Safari Packages

Best for: Travellers who want to explore deeper, add Lake Manyara or the Ndutu region, or allow a more relaxed pace.

Typical route: Arusha → Tarangire → Lake Manyara → Serengeti (2–3 nights) → Ngorongoro → Arusha.

What you see: Four parks instead of three. Lake Manyara adds a different ecosystem (lakeshore, groundwater forest, tree-climbing lions). More time in the Serengeti means you can explore different regions — Central, Western Corridor, or Northern (for Migration).

Price (direct with Safaris Tanzania): From $1,716/person (budget) to $2,288/person (mid-range). Private safari: $2,600–$3,640/person. See the 7-day Serengeti and Ngorongoro itinerary.

7-day add-on options: Extend with a Zanzibar beach stay ($156–$312/night for beachfront resort) or a Kilimanjaro climb (see combo packages below).

10-Day Tanzania Safari Packages

Best for: Travellers who want the complete Tanzania experience — multiple parks, different ecosystems, and a relaxed pace.

Typical route: Arusha → Tarangire → Lake Manyara → Serengeti (3 nights) → Ndutu → Ngorongoro → Arusha.

What you see: The Ndutu region (December–March calving season) adds a completely different wildlife experience — thousands of wildebeest births, predators in abundance, and stunning golden savanna photography. A 10-day safari also allows you to visit the Western Corridor or Northern Serengeti for Migration crossings (July–September).

Price (direct with Safaris Tanzania): From $2,288/person (budget) to $3,120/person (mid-range).

Kilimanjaro + Safari Combo Packages

Arusha is the base for both Kilimanjaro climbs and northern Tanzania safaris. Combining the two is a natural and popular choice — and often better value than booking them separately. See our Kilimanjaro + Safari combo itineraries.

10-Day Kili Climb + Safari Combo

Route: 5-day Kilimanjaro climb (Machame or Lemosho route) → 5-day northern safari.

Ideal for: Adventure travellers who want both the roof of Africa and the Great Migration. Most travellers do the climb first (you will be tired afterward) and save the safari for when you need less physical output.

Price (direct with Safaris Tanzania): From $2,912/person (climb + 5-day safari, group). Solo traveller supplement applies.

What's included: Kilimanjaro park fees, climb permits, guides, porters, tents, meals on the mountain; safari accommodation, meals, game drives, park fees, guide, vehicle.

14-Day Tanzania Grand Tour

Route: Arusha → Tarangire → Lake Manyara → Serengeti (3 nights, different regions) → Ndutu → Ngorongoro Crater → Arusha.

Ideal for: Photographers, repeat safari-goers, and anyone who wants to see Tanzania at a pace that is not rushed.

Price (direct with Safaris Tanzania): From $3,120/person (mid-range). Browse our 10-day Tanzania safari itinerary.

What Affects Tanzania Safari Package Prices

1. Lodge Tier

The single biggest variable. Lodge tier determines 50–60% of your total package cost:

  • Budget ($83–$125/night): Basic tented camps, smaller lodges, shared facilities possible. Clean and adequate. Not luxurious.
  • Mid-range ($125–$208/night): Good permanent camps and 3-star lodges. En-suite, hot water, quality food. This is where most travellers land.
  • Premium ($208–$416/night): Luxury tented camps and 4–5-star lodges. Plunge pools, private decks, gourmet dining, exceptional guides.
  • Ultra-luxury ($416+/night): Private conservancies, top-tier lodges (think Singita, Four Seasons). Exclusive access, private vehicles, spa treatments.

Mid-range safari accommodation — permanent tented camps with en-suite facilities, quality meals, and views that make early mornings worthwhile.

2. Group vs. Private Safari

Group (join-in): You share the vehicle and costs with other travellers. 6–8 people per vehicle. Cheapest option. Good for solo travellers and budget-conscious groups.

Private: Your own vehicle and guide. You set the schedule. 30–50% more expensive per person but significantly better for families with young children, photographers, and anyone who wants flexibility.

3. Season

  • Peak (July–October, December–February): Highest prices. Serengeti Migration (July–Oct), calving season (Dec–Mar). Book 3–6 months ahead.
  • Shoulder (June, November): 10–20% below peak. Good game viewing, fewer crowds.
  • Low (March–May): 20–40% below peak. Long rains. Green landscapes. Excellent value if you don't mind wet roads and fewer sightings.

4. Park Combination

Some parks are more expensive to access than others. Park fees are charged per person per day and vary by park:

  • Serengeti: $73/person/day (highest — but worth it)
  • Ngorongoro Crater: $73/person/day + $208 vehicle fee
  • Tarangire: $52/person/day
  • Lake Manyara: $52/person/day

5 days covering Serengeti + Ngorongoro + Tarangire: approximately $260–$312 in park fees per person.

What Is Included in Every Safaris Tanzania Package

  • Accommodation (as per lodge tier chosen)
  • All meals during the safari (breakfast, lunch, dinner)
  • Professional, English-speaking safari guide
  • 4x4 safari vehicle (pop-roof for optimal game viewing)
  • Park entrance fees (Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire, Lake Manyara as applicable)
  • Road transfers from Arusha and return
  • Bottled water during game drives
  • All government taxes and levies

The Serengeti ecosystem supports the largest concentration of large mammals on earth — this is what a Tanzania safari package delivers.

What's Not Included

  • International flights to/from Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO)
  • Tanzania visa ($52–$104)
  • Travel insurance (including medical evacuation)
  • Guide and driver tips (budget 10–15% of package cost)
  • Alcoholic beverages (unless premium package)
  • Hot air balloon ride ($416–$624 per person — optional but highly recommended)
  • Personal expenses (souvenirs, snacks)
  • Laundry (available at most lodges at extra cost)

How to Choose the Right Package

First-time safari travellers: Start with the 5-day Northern Circuit. It covers the three iconic northern parks, works year-round, and is the best-priced complete Tanzania experience. From $1,144/person with Safaris Tanzania.

Photographers: Go for 7+ days and request a private safari. You want time on sightings, flexibility to stay with animals, and the option to visit Ndutu (December–March) or the Northern Serengeti (July–September).

Families: 5–7 days is ideal for children who can handle game drives. Private safari is worth the premium — you set the schedule, you can stop when attention wanes, and you don't need to coordinate with other travellers' preferences.

Repeat safari-goers: Go deeper. 10–14 days covering multiple regions of the Serengeti, Ndutu, or adding Ruaha and Selous (southern Tanzania) for a completely different ecosystem and much lower tourist density.

Travellers on a budget: Low-season 5-day group safari. March–May and November offer the best value — wildlife is still excellent, roads are muddy but passable, and lodge prices drop significantly. From $884/person.
