Ngorongoro Crater Safari
The world's largest intact volcanic caldera. All Big Five permanently resident. Black rhino, 500 bird species, and one of the densest wildlife concentrations on earth — all within a single morning game drive.
Why the Crater
What Makes Ngorongoro Crater Different
All Big Five in One Morning
The crater floor is a self-contained ecosystem with lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and black rhino permanently resident. Most visitors see all Big Five within a single 6-hour game drive — something that can take days elsewhere.
Best Place in Africa for Black Rhino
Around 30 endangered eastern black rhino live on the crater floor — the most reliable place in Africa to see them. Rhino mothers with calves have been observed at close range, something almost unheard of elsewhere.
Birdwatcher's Paradise
Over 500 bird species recorded. The soda-pink Lake Magadi on the crater floor attracts thousands of flamingos. Secretary birds, kori bustards, and crowned eagles are commonly seen.
Wildlife guide
Wildlife of Ngorongoro Crater — What to See and When
The crater floor holds approximately 25,000 large mammals. Here is a detailed guide to the wildlife you are most likely to encounter, with specific behaviours and seasonal notes from our guides.
Black Rhino
Endangered — ~30 resident on the crater floorThe crater's black rhinos are primarily solitary and most active in the early morning and late afternoon. They spend midday resting in the Lerai Forest or near water. The best viewing areas are the Lerai Forest and the open plains south of Lake Magadi. Mothers with calves are seen more regularly here than anywhere else in Africa — a testament to the success of anti-poaching efforts.
Arrive at the crater floor by 6:30am for the best rhino sighting chance. Your guide will scan the tree line and open plains systematically. Patience is key — they can appear suddenly from behind a thicket.
African Lion
Abundant — one of the highest densities anywhereThe crater floor supports multiple large prides, including the dominant Munge and Ngotiek prides. Lions are most active around dawn and dusk. During the day they rest in the shade of acacia trees or in the swampy areas. Unusually for wild lions, they are relatively relaxed around vehicles here — a result of decades of protective management.
Early morning drives frequently encounter lions on the move or at kills. The area around the Ngotiek Hills and near Lake Magadi are reliable pride territories. Your guide will have the morning's last known positions from the previous evening.
African Elephant
Large herds — largest tuskers in TanzaniaThe crater elephants are the largest in Tanzania — bulls frequently exceed 6 tonnes with impressive tusks. They move in family herds of 10–30, led by the oldest matriarch. They are most active in the morning and late afternoon, spending the heat of midday near the Ngaruka Swamp and Lerai Forest. The crater's elephants are fully habituated to vehicles.
The Lerai Forest and the area near the Safari (Ngotiek) hills are the best places to see large bull elephants. Morning drives when the mist is still on the plains often produce extraordinary close encounters as the herds emerge to feed.
Cape Buffalo
Very abundant — herds of 500+ year-roundBuffalo herds of 500–1,000 individuals are a permanent feature of the crater floor. They spend mornings in the swampy Lerai Forest, emerge to graze the open plains in mid-morning, and return to the swamp by midday. The herds are particularly impressive at water crossings near the swamp entry points.
The Lerai Forest entrance around 8–9am is reliably spectacular — the entire herd funnels through a narrow gap in the trees to reach the open plains. This is one of the most photographed wildlife moments in Tanzania.
Flamingo
Thousands on Lake Magadi — best in East AfricaLake Magadi, the alkaline soda lake on the crater floor, hosts thousands of lesser flamingos — their pink and white mass creates one of Africa's most photographed natural scenes. They are most active in the morning when they feed. A smaller population of greater flamingos is also present. The flamingo population varies with water levels — higher water creates better breeding conditions.
Morning light on Lake Magadi with flamingos in the foreground and the crater rim as backdrop is one of the finest compositions in African wildlife photography. Arrive early to get the best angle before other vehicles gather.
Spotted Hyena
Large clan — commonly seen, often underestimatedNgorongoro has one of the largest spotted hyena clans in Africa — estimates put the crater population at 200–300 individuals. They are primarily nocturnal but frequently seen in daylight, especially near kills or at communal den sites. Hyena clans are matriarchal — the female alpha is the dominant individual in all social interactions.
Hyena sightings near the Lemala plains and in the open area west of Lake Magadi are common. Their 'laugh' — actually a hooting contact call — is one of the characteristic sounds of the crater at night.

Month-by-Month Guide for Ngorongoro Crater
The crater is productive year-round, but each season offers a different experience. Here is our honest month-by-month assessment based on decades of guiding.
Green season. The crater floor is lush and beautiful after the short rains. Wildlife is dispersed but healthy. Flamingos are abundant on Lake Magadi. Best for photographers — green landscapes, dramatic skies, and good light.
Calving season extends to the crater's southern plains. Predator activity is high as lions and hyenas target newborn antelope. Mists morning and evening create atmosphere. Warm and pleasant.
Long rains begin. The crater rim can be cloudy and the floor may have muddy patches. Some roads become harder to navigate. But the landscape is at its most beautiful green, and there are very few tourists.
Peak of the long rains. The crater is spectacularly green but some low-lying areas may flood. Fewer visitors. Road conditions on the crater floor can be challenging — a 4x4 is essential. Not ideal for first-time visitors.
Rains easing. The crater begins to dry out and wildlife starts concentrating more reliably around water sources. May is a transition month — late season rates may apply. Good for wildlife density, poor for accessibility.
Dry season begins. Roads on the crater floor are excellent. Wildlife viewing is at its best as animals concentrate around water. The crater rim can be cold in early mornings (4–8°C). Peak pricing begins.
Peak season. The crater floor is dry and wildlife is easy to spot in the open. Flamingos remain on Lake Magadi. Early mornings are cold (3–6°C at the rim). Parks are busy — visit as early in the day as possible.
Continued peak season. Same conditions as July. Early morning mist on the crater floor can create dramatic photography. The Munge Pride lions are frequently seen near the Safari highlands. Best time for dramatic wildlife photography.
Still peak season. Wildlife remains concentrated around water sources. Early morning temperatures begin to warm slightly. Flamingo numbers on Lake Magadi begin to increase. One of the most reliable months overall.
Short rains usually begin late in the month. The first green shoots appear on the crater floor. Antelope fawns start appearing. An excellent month — good wildlife, slightly fewer vehicles than July–September.
Short rains in full swing. The crater floor becomes green and lush. Dust levels drop. Wildlife disperses slightly but photography conditions are beautiful. Shoulder season pricing applies. Underrated month.
Christmas and New Year peak. The crater floor is lush from the short rains. Wildlife is healthy and active. Holiday pricing applies. Morning mist is common. Festive atmosphere with visitors from around the world.

How to Visit the Ngorongoro Crater
Park Fees
Ngorongoro Crater requires two fees: conservation area access ($73/person/day) plus a crater descent fee ($73/person). Both are paid to Tanzania National Parks — they are not included in your safari price. Safaris Tanzania provides a full fee breakdown in every quote.
Hours & Access
Vehicles must descend the crater walls between 6:00am and no later than 5:00pm. No overnight camping on the crater floor is permitted. The crater rim is at 2,300m altitude — temperatures can be cool in the early morning, especially in June–August.
From Arusha
The Ngorongoro Crater is a 2–3 hour drive from Arusha, via the scenic Rift Valley viewpoint. Most safari itineraries combine Ngorongoro with the Serengeti — you descend into the crater on your way to or from the Serengeti, making it a natural stop on any northern circuit route.
How Long You Need
A single full morning descent (6am–12pm) is sufficient to see the crater's highlights. You do not need more than one descent — the crater is a contained ecosystem and the wildlife patterns repeat daily. We recommend combining it with a full-day or multi-day Serengeti safari.

Pro tip from our guides
“Descend at first light — 6am sharp. The first hour when the crater floor is still misty is when the predators are most active. By 9am you will have seen everything you came for. Then head to the crater rim for breakfast with a view that stretches 100 kilometres.”
— Ibrahim Mushi, 19 years guiding Ngorongoro

Combine with the Serengeti
The Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti are the two pillars of the northern safari circuit — 90 minutes apart by road. Most visitors combine both in a single trip. The crater for concentrated wildlife sightings, the Serengeti for scale, migration, and open plains.
